Jets Free Agent Profile: What to do with OLB Tarell Basham?

Jets Wire takes a look at whether or not New York should bring back outside linebacker and impending free agent Tarell Basham in 2021.

Before Joe Douglas can focus on who he plans on targeting in free agency come March, he’ll have a handful of in-house decisions to make.

The Jets have 25 players set to hit the open market this offseason. Some don’t figure to factor into New York’s plans for 2021, while others it’s safe to assume the Jets would like to keep around for a while. Either way, Douglas has a lot of work to do to put together a competitive roster for Robert Saleh.

New York didn’t boast much of a pass rush in 2020, but Tarell Basham turned in a solid season playing on the edge. Should he get a chance to build on last season’s performance in Saleh and Jeff Ulbrich’s defense? Let’s evaluate the situation in Jets Wire’s latest free agent profile.

Marcus Maye, Neville Hewitt among 5 impending free agents Jets should re-sign

Now that the offseason has officially begun for New York, Jets Wire takes a look at five impending free agents the Jets should bring back.

Many decisions lie ahead for Joe Douglas.

Besides hiring a new head coach, the Jets have to focus on retaining their own players, some of them before free agency begins in March. The Jets have 25 players slated to hit the open market. Among them are starters, depth pieces and veterans.

After going 2-14, the Jets are certainly going to experience more roster turnover. However, there’s a handful of free agents Douglas should want to bring back for 2021 and beyond.

Adam Gase declines to say he should be Jets HC in 2021 as players come to his defense

Instead of addressing his future following the Jets’ win over the Browns in Week 16, Adam Gase praised the way his players have played.

Should the Jets’ late-season mini-surge be enough to earn Adam Gase another year at One Jets Drive? He won’t say.

Even with Gang Green knocking off two contenders the last two weeks, Gase’s days as Jets head coach are likely numbered. When asked if he thinks he should be New York’s head coach in 2021 following its win over the Browns in Week 16, Gase deflected and opted to praise his players instead of speculating on his future.

“I think our guys have done a good job of doing what I’ve asked, what our coaching staff has asked them to do,” Gase said, per SNY. “I can’t say how much… the amount I appreciate what these guys have done to battle week in and week out., it’s hard to put into words.”

Despite the Jets’ struggles throughout 2020, they have continued to play hard for Gase. New York had every chance to roll over following the 40-3 drubbing it suffered at the hands of the Seahawks in Week 14 but instead responded with two hard-fought wins with Gase leading the charge.

“Coach Gase is a great coach and a great friend,” Tarell Basham said Sunday, per The Athletic’s Connor Hughes. “I hope he’s still around [in 2021]. The players who play for him love to play for him.”

Gase’s 9-22 record in nearly two years will likely speak louder than this two-game sample size. New York has simply not trended in the right direction under Gase’s watch, nor has he done much to aid Sam Darnold’s progression — though Darnold says he has enjoyed his time playing for Gase.

“I love Adam,” Darnold said, per Hughes. “I love working for him.”

The fight the Jets have shown at the end of 2020 is encouraging for the future of the organization, but odds are it will not have much bearing on Gase’s. Even if Gase gets the best of Bill Belichick and the Patriots in Week 17, it probably still won’t be enough to save his job.

Jamison Crowder, Tarell Basham among Jets’ Studs & Duds in Week 16 win over Browns

Here are the Jets’ Studs and Duds in their Week 16 victory over the Cleveland Browns.

The Jets finally reclaimed their turf after losing their first seven home games of the season.

New York won its first game at MetLife Stadium this season with a 23-16 victory over the Cleveland Browns. It certainly wasn’t a pretty game, but Sam Darnold played well enough to give his team a chance to get the win. The Jets defense, meanwhile, made it difficult on the Browns offense all game, forcing two turnovers and stifling their running attack.

The win clinched the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft for the Jets. That means no Trevor Lawrence and a whole lot of questions about the quarterback position entering the offseason.

For now, though, let’s take a look at the Jets’ Studs and Duds from their Week 16 win.

Browns vs. Jets game recap: Everything we know from New York’s second win

A look back at what happened in the Jets’ Week 16 home finale vs. the Cleveland Browns.

The Jets have themselves a winning streak.

Really, it’s true. The owners of an 0-13 record two weeks ago, Gang Green has beaten the Rams and now the Browns. Cleveland, with its eyes on the playoffs, lost 23-16 on Sunday.

The Jets’ first win at MetLife Stadium in 2020 came in their home finale and was made possible by some stingy defense and just enough offense. Here’s a look at what went down in win No. 2, which locked New York into pick No. 2 in the 2021 NFL draft.

Instant Analysis: Jets choke away their first win in gut-wrenching loss to Patriots

The Jets were five minutes away from picking up their first win of 2020.

The Jets were five minutes away from picking up their first win of 2020.

And then they choked. Badly.

Joe Flacco tossed an interception into double coverage when the Jets should have been running the ball to salt away the clock. The Patriots scored on their ensuing drive, New York failed to break the tie on its final offensive drive and Nick Folk drained a 51-yard field goal to hand Gang Green its ninth straight loss.

The Jets have been embarrassed plenty so far this season, but make no mistake about it — this is the worst loss they have endured in a long time. Fans can take solace in New York still being the front-runner in the Trevor Lawrence sweepstakes, but Monday night was indicative of why the Jets are the laughing stock of the NFL right now.

Game Balls

Breshad Perriman: Perriman turned in his best game as a Jet going up against the Patriots’ banged-up secondary, catching five passes for 101 yards and two scores.

Harvey Langi: Langi played well in his first start in place of the departed Avery Williamson, registering 10 tackles from the inside linebacker position.

Tarell Basham: Basham was a force coming off the edge, recording three tackles, two of which came for a loss. He battled injuries throughout the night but fought through to make his fair share of plays.

Quick Thoughts

-The way the Jets performed in the final five minutes was flat out embarrassing. There is simply no other way to put it. All of New York’s incompetence came out at once and it cost Gang Green what was likely its best chance of winning a game in 2020.

-Why in the world is Flacco throwing deep into double coverage with a touchdown lead in the closing moments? Aren’t veteran quarterbacks supposed to be savvy and aware of what not to do in those situations? The Jets would not have been in this game if it weren’t for Flacco’s play, but he ultimately cost his team the game.

-Adam Gase and Dowell Loggains also deserve a heap of the blame for New York’s lack of execution down the stretch. Taking a shot downfield on a first down should not have even been on Loggains’ mind, yet he drew the play up anyway. Another week, another pitiful performance from the Jets’ shot callers.

-The Jets are 0-8, so naturally, they placed an emphasis on getting 37-year-old Frank Gore going early. They followed up that forward-thinking by punting on fourth-and-three from the Patriots’ 41 late in the first quarter. Those two decisions perfectly sum up New York’s 2020 season and how poorly the coaching staff has performed.

-Two more major negatives from Monday night’s win — losing Mekhi Becton and Brian Poole to injury. Hopefully, the two will benefit from the bye week and be back in action against the Chargers in Week 11.

-Wasn’t Pierre Desir signed to be a No. 1 corner? He has played more like a fringe roster player than a starter in 2020. At this point, it is practically tradition for the Jets to swing and miss on a top cornerback signing in free agency.

-Denzel Mims was a focal point of the Jets’ passing attack in the first half, yet saw only one target in the second. This is the third consecutive week that this has happened and, frankly, it is mind-boggling that New York is incapable of properly managing a rising star receiver.

-Bill Belichick continues to eat Gase’s lunch every time they square off. At least the two can share a laugh about it in the offseason when Gase is seeking new employment.

-Well, at least the Jets are still the front-runners to land Trevor Lawrence. New York has clearly embraced the tank and is dedicated to being the worst possible team on a weekly basis.

Instant Analysis: Jets start strong, but falter in loss to Bills

Close, but no cigar for the Jets on Sunday afternoon.

Close, but no cigar for the Jets on Sunday afternoon.

New York had its first win of 2020 in its sights, taking a lead into halftime against the Bills and hanging around for the duration of the afternoon. Its efforts were for naught, though, as Buffalo did just enough to snap its two-game losing streak and etch out an 18-10 win over the Jets.

The Jets played energized football in what was easily their best performance of the season. It took seven weeks for things to sort of come together and New York did not break into the win column, but at least its Week 7 showing was not embarrassing. That’s all Jets fans could ask for at this point in the season.

Game Balls

Tarell Basham: Basham’s strip-sack of Josh Allen in the first half stifled a Bills drive that otherwise would have resulted in points. He’s been solid for the Jets rushing off the edge so far this season.

La’Mical Perine: Perine showed what he could do with an increased workload, rushing for 39 yards and a touchdown to go along with two catches for 16 yards.

Quinnen Williams: Williams was disruptive against Buffalo, registering four tackles, three quarterback hits, one TFL and a sack. The second-year pro was a frequent visitor to the Bills’ backfield and flushed Allen out of the pocket with regularity.

Quick Thoughts

-It didn’t result in a win, but the Jets played with more energy against the Bills on Sunday than they had the previous six weeks combined. Buffalo has been struggling and New York smelled an opportunity. Kudos to Gang Green for being ready to battle in Week 7.

-The tide turned when Buffalo got points at the end of the first half and Andre Roberts returned the second-half kickoff into Jets territory. That was all the momentum the Bills needed to get the ball rolling.

-It’s no wonder the Jets moved the ball and got points on their first drive without Adam Gase calling plays. Dowell Loggains is no offensive savant, but even he can get New York’s offense going in the right direction.

-Credit Loggains for getting Perine more involved. As long as Loggains remains calling plays, expect the rookie’s workload to steadily increase.

-Loggains also did a nice job utilizing Frank Gore. Both of New York’s running backs saw their fair share of carries, but Gore was not run into the ground as he has been with Gase calling the plays. He was afforded ample rest between runs and beat Buffalo’s defense for a couple of chunk runs as a result.

-With all of that being said, the Jets’ offensive performance still left a lot to be desired — especially on third down. New York went stagnant in the second half and it cost them the game.

-All things considered, the Jets did a pretty good job of containing Josh Allen. He torched New York in Week 1, but that was not the case on Sunday. He had to work for every yard, though he still managed nearly 400 total.

-All it took was one game for Denzel Mims to show why the Jets were excited when he fell to them in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He contributed both as a receiver and a blocker, springing Perine’s touchdown run with a seal on the edge.

-Sunday was the best the Jets have played in a long time. However, if that is indeed New York’s best effort, it’s tough to see a win coming anytime soon. Yes, the Jets hung around against the Bills, but Buffalo also played down to its competition. Gase and company are going to have to take things up a notch to come out on the winning end.

Jets vs. Bills inactives: Denzel Mims, Avery Williamson officially out for Week 1

Denzel Mims and Avery Williamson are among the inactive for the Jets’ season opener against the Bills.

The Jets are officially without two impact starters for their season opener against the Bills.

Denzel Mims and Avery Williamson are both inactive after being ruled out on Friday. After missing a chunk of training camp because of a hamstring injury, Mims hurt his good hamstring on Thursday and missed practice on Friday. According to Adam Gase, Mims could be a candidate for short-term injured reserve, but it remains to be seen if that is the direction New York opts to go.

Williamson was set to return from a torn ACL suffered in the 2019 preseason on Sunday, but he will have to wait at least another week to get back on the field. With Williamson and Patrick Onwuasor (injured reserve) sidelined, Blake Cashman and Neville Hewitt will start at inside linebacker. Harvey Langi, who primarily plays outside linebacker, will serve as a backup.

Joe Flacco (neck) and running back La’Mical Perine (ankle) are also out for the Jets. New York signed Mike White to serve as Sam Darnold’s back up against Buffalo and promoted Josh Adams from the practice squad to take Perine’s place. White has no regular season experience, while Adams rushed eight times for only 12 yards with the Jets in 2019.

Tarell Basham (ankle), Jamison Crowder (hamstring), Alex Lewis (shoulder), Marcus Maye (calf/ankle), Breshad Perriman (knee) and Nathan Shepherd are all active. Lewis and Maye were questionable leading up to Sunday, but will suit up for New York. Wide receiver Josh Malone is also up from the practice squad.

As for the Bills, they are without starting cornerback Josh Norman, who landed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury on Saturday. Defensive tackle Vernon Butler (hamstring) is inactive, as is rookie defensive end A.J. Epenesa.

Jets injury report: Denzel Mims, Avery Williamson ruled out vs. Bills

Denzel Mims and Avery Williamson have both been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Bills.

The New York Jets will be without one key player on offense and defense against Buffalo.

Wide receiver Denzel Mims (hamstrings) and linebacker Avery Williamson (hamstring) were both ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Bills. Mims hurt his good hamstring on Thursday and did not practice Friday. Adam Gase told the media Friday that Mims could be a candidate for short-term injured reserve, but he’ll discuss that with Joe Douglas. Gase added that he “feels like [expletive]” for Mims because the rookie was just getting back from his first hamstring injury.

As expected, quarterback Joe Flacco (neck) and running back La’Mical Perine (ankle) are both out. The Jets will either promote David Fales or Mike White from their practice squad in place of Flacco.

Safety Marcus Maye (calf/ankle) is listed as questionable, but he is expected to play Sunday after a limited practice on Friday. Guard Alex Lewis (shoulder) is also questionable but should play.

LB Tarell Basham (ankle), WR Jamison Crowder (hamstring), WR Breshad Perriman (knee) and DL Nathan Shepherd (rib) all fully participated in Friday’s practice. Shepherd was just added to Friday’s injury report.

As for the Bills, cornerback Josh Norman has been ruled out with a hamstring injury, which could benefit New York’s limited group of receivers. Meanwhile, defensive tackle Vernon Butler is questionable with a hamstring injury.

Jets Injury Report: Marcus Maye, Denzel Mims suffer setbacks

Jets Injury Report 9/10/20.

After getting a somewhat clean bill of health on Wednesday, the Jets received some blows on Thursday’s injury report.

Safety Marcus Maye, who was already dealing with a calf injury, did not participate in Thursday’s practice with a new ankle injury. Although Maye had a fantastic training camp in which he stepped up into a new role, his status for Sunday’s game is now up in the air.

Rookie wide receiver Denzel Mims, who was a full participant on Wednesday, was downgraded to limited. Mims’ hamstring injury is now listed plurally as “hamstrings.” Needless to say, this development jeopardizes Mims’ chances of making his debut on Sunday.

As for Avery Williamson, the veteran linebacker was held out of practice with a hamstring injury. The Jets added Alec Ogletree to their practice squad as Williamson deals with yet another injury.

Tarell Basham (ankle), Joe Flacco (neck) and Alex Lewis (shoulder) were also limited on Thursday. Flacco is not expected to be ready to go for Week 1 as he works his way back from offseason neck surgery, but both Basham and Lewis are expected to be ready to go for Sunday’s game.

Receivers Jamison Crowder (hamstring) and Breshad Perriman (knee) were both full participants on Thursday while running back Frank Gore enjoyed a veteran rest day.
