Former Browns assistant following Alex Van Pelt to the Patriots

Another former Browns assistant is joining New England

Former Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt is taking another former assistant with him to the Patriots. Last year’s tight ends coach T.C. McCartney is reportedly joining Van Pelt on new Patriots head coach Jerrod Mayo’s staff.

McCartney had been with the Browns for the past four seasons, in 2020 and 2021 he was an offensive assistant before being the team’s tight end coach the past two seasons. McCartney was let go after the season at the same time as Van Pelt.

It makes sense that Van Pelt would look to add coaches he is familiar with going into his first season with the Patriots. AVP will get a chance to truly run an offense and call plays for the first time joining a defensive-minded head coach’s staff. Keep an eye on other former Browns assistants who have worked with Van Pelt as he builds his support staff for the 2024 NFL season.

Browns still have some coaching vacancies to fill

The openings include

Kevin Stefanski has been busy building up his support staff as the new head coach of the Cleveland Browns. With three more assistants officially joining the Browns this week, the coaching roster is nearly complete.

However, there are still a couple of openings left to fill.

On offense, the biggest opening is for the quarterback coach. Both Stefanski and offensive assistant T.C. McCartney have experience as QB coaches in the NFL, but as of today (Feb. 16th) there is no quarterbacks coach on the Browns staff. Expect McCartney to work closely with Baker Mayfield in his vaguely defined role.

Defensively, there are just two coaches under coordinator Joe Woods. The new DL coach is Chris Kiffin, while Jeff Howard will serve as the passing game coordinator and DBs coach.

That leaves openings for assistants under those two, as well as a linebackers coach. A more general defensive assistant like McCartney on the offensive side could be in the works as well.

Reports of Jason Tarver being hired as the LBs coach have been rampant for over a week, but as of yet, the position is still vacant on the team’s website.

T.C. McCartney officially hired as Browns offensive assistant coach, not QB coach

McCartney worked for the Browns in 2014 and spent 2019 in Denver as the QB coach

The offensive coaching staff for the new-look Cleveland Browns got one step closer to completion with the late-week hiring of T.C. McCartney. The newest staffer joins Kevin Stefanski’s staff as an offensive assistant coach.

McCartney comes to the Browns from Denver. He spent one season under rookie head coach Vic Fangio as the Broncos quarterbacks coach, where he worked with rookie Drew Lock and veteran Joe Flacco. Prior to that, he served as an offensive assistant and quality control coach in San Francisco under Kyle Shanahan.

He’s a former college quarterback at LSU and has worked extensively with the position since entering the NFL coaching ranks with the Browns back in 2014, but McCartney is not the Browns’ QB coach. That position remains vacant for now.

Broncos hire Mike Shula as new quarterbacks coach

The Broncos have hired Mike Shula to be their new quarterbacks coach.

The Denver Broncos have hired former New York Giants offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Mike Shula to be their new quarterbacks coach, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. Denver had an opening at the position after moving on from T.C. McCartney, who coached the team’s quarterbacks in 2019.

This marks the second change to the offensive coaching staff the Broncos have made this offseason. Earlier this month, Denver fired offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello and replaced him with former Giants head coach Pat Shurmur. The Broncos then fired McCartney, clearing the way for Shula to follow Shurmur to Denver.

Broncos coach Vic Fangio clearly wanted to make improving the team’s offense a priority this offseason.

Shula, 54, is the son of former coach Don Shula, the winningest coach in NFL history. Don Shula won the Associated Press’ Coach of the Year award four times during his 35 years as a coach.

Mike Shula has been coaching in the NFL since 1988. Before a two-year run with the Giants from 2018-2019, Shula coached the Carolina Panthers’ quarterbacks (2011-2012) and then was their offensive coordinator (2013-2017). He has served as a QBs coach or offensive coordinator for five NFL teams.

Playing under Shula last season, New York quarterback Daniel Jones completed 61.9 percent of his passes for 3,027 yards with 24 touchdowns against 12 interceptions in 12 starts. Shula will now get to work with Denver’s young quarterback, Drew Lock, who won four of the five games he started last season.

Broncos interview Mike Shula for quarterbacks coach opening

The Broncos are interviewing Mike Shula for their open quarterbacks coach position.

When the Broncos fired offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello, they had a replacement candidate in mind: former Giants head coach Pat Shurmur. When they team fired quarterbacks coach T.C. McCartney, they probably had a replacement in mind for him, too, likely from Shurmur’s former staff.

Former New York offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Mike Shula is in Denver interviewing for the team’s open QBs coach position, according to multiple media reports. Ryan O’Halloran of The Denver Post was the first to report the news Thursday.

Shula, 54, was likely the Broncos’ top choice for the job after they brought in Shurmur. Shula, the son of legendary NFL coach Don Shula, coached under Shurmur with the Giants over the last two seasons.

Before landing in New York, Shula served as the Panthers’ quarterbacks coach (2011-2012) and offensive coordinator (2013-2017). Under Shula, Carolina quarterback Cam Newton had a career year in 2015, claiming league MVP honors after scoring 45 total touchdowns.

More recently, Shula worked with Giants quarterback Daniel Jones in 2019. Jones completed 61.9 percent of his passes for 3,027 yards with 24 touchdowns against 12 interceptions in 13 games last season. He threw for over 300 yards and four touchdowns in three different games.

Shula is clearly the favorite to become Denver’s next QBs coach.

Broncos fire quarterbacks coach T.C. McCartney

After hiring a new offensive coordinator, the Broncos have fired quarterbacks coach T.C. McCartney.

The changes to the Broncos’ offensive coaching staff continue.

After moving on from Rich Scangarello, Denver hired former Giants head coach Pat Shurmur to be their new offensive coordinator. It appears that Shurmur now plans to bring in his own quarterbacks coach.

The Broncos have fired quarterbacks coach T.C. McCartney, according to multiple media reports. Benjamin Allbright of KOA Radio was the first to report the news of McCartney’s firing on Wednesday.

McCartney played QB at LSU and went on to serve as an assistant coach with the University of Colorado and LSU before making the jump to the NFL, spending time with the Browns and 49ers.

McCartney spent three seasons in San Francisco before following Scangarello to Denver last year. He helped groom rookie Drew Lock in 2019 and the quarterback won four of his five games as a starter.

After firing McCartney, the Broncos may target former New York QBs coach/offensive coordinator Mike Shula. Shula’s familiarity with Shurmur likely makes him the favorite to replace McCartney in Denver.

Mike Shula may interest Broncos

Broncos offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur might have interest in bringing Mike Shula to Denver.

After moving on from Rich Scangarello, the Denver Broncos are expected to make former New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur their new offensive coordinator. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Shurmur have some of his old coaching staff join him in Denver.

Mike Shula, who served as New York’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2018-2019, is presumably available after Shurmur’s departure. The Giants are expected to hire Jerry Schuplinski as their new QBs coach, which might be a sign that Shula won’t be brought back for the 2020 season.

The Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala noted on Twitter on Monday that Shula “spent a good bit of time” with quarterback Drew Lock at Missouri’s pro day last year. If Shurmur wants one of “his guys” coaching Denver’s quarterbacks, Shula would make sense.

It’s also possible that the Broncos could stick with current QBs coach T.C. McCartney, who joined Denver’s staff last year. McCartney has five years of coaching experience in the NFL. He worked for the San Francisco 49ers and Cleveland Browns before joining Vic Fangio’s staff in 2019.

So far, Scangarello is the only coach the Broncos haven’t brought back.
