Steelers vs Bills: Pittsburgh starting offense out after 2 drives

The Steelers got two quick scores and called it a night for the starting offense.

When you come out and score two big touchdowns on two drives, you get the rest of the night off. That’s what happened for the Pittsburgh Steelers against the Buffalo Bills.

Pittsburgh came out on its opening drive and scored on a 62-yard rush by running back Jaylen Warren with the full drive going 86 yards in just 2:37.

On the second offensive drive, the Steelers offense took advantage of a 52-yard punt return by wide receiver Calvin Austin III. On the first play of the drive, quarterback Kenny Pickett connected with tight end Pat Freiermuth for a 25-yard touchdown.

The Bills announced they plan to play their starters for the entire first quarter and half of the second quarter. We wondered if the Steelers would follow suit and play the starters more or perhaps pull back earlier. Obviously, it was the latter and the Steelers backups will get some important reps against the Bills starters.

Steelers add CB Joe Haden to Reserve/COVID-19 list

Steelers lose defensive starter to COVID list.

When the Pittsburgh Steelers take on the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, they will be doing it without starting cornerback Joe Haden. On the same day the Steelers announced multiple players coming off the Reserve/COVID-19 list, Haden finds himself on it.

With the new COVID-19 protocols in the NFL, there’s still a chance that Haden could be activated in time to play against Baltimore. If Haden can’t go, Akhello Witherspoon is the most likely candidate to replace him in the starting lineup.

If Haden is unable to play on Sunday, it’s highly likely he played his last game as a Steelers last week against the Cleveland Browns. Haden is set to hit free agency in the offseason and the team has shown no interest in bringing Haden back.

Steelers could lead the AFC North with a win over the Lions

Don’t look now but the Steelers are pretty good.

This week the Pittsburgh Steelers are in a position to seize a perfect opportunity. Thanks to an upset loss by the Baltimore Ravens, the Steelers have an opportunity to take over the lead in the AFC North with a win over the winless Detroit Lions.

As it stands now, the Ravens are 6-3 and on top in the AFC North. Pittsburgh is nipping at their heels at 5-3. Baltimore has an 0-1 record in the division while Pittsburgh is 1-1. So if the Steelers can not slip up against the Lions they would move into the top spot based on division record.

It’s hard to imagine this team was 1-3 at one point this season and seemed to be in a spiral they couldn’t pull out of. But thanks to the continued improvement of the young offensive line, this team seems to be capable of doing enough to win and in today’s NFL that seems to be just good enough.

Here are the current NFL playoff rankings heading into this week’s game:

1. Tennessee Titans (7-2)
2. Baltimore Ravens (6-3)
3. Los Angeles Chargers (5-3)
4. Buffalo Bills (5-3)
5. Las Vegas Raiders (5-3)
6. Pittsburgh Steelers (5-3)
7. New England Patriots (5-4)

Steelers vs Browns injury update: Steelers almost back to full health

Pittsburgh only had two players limited at Thursday’s practice.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbydbzmnr1bhxef player_id=none image=https://steelerswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

This week’s game is going to be huge for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The team is currently on a two-game winning streak and is headed to Cleveland to take on the Browns with a chance to get above .500 for the first time this season.

Here is the full practice report for the Steelers from Thursday.

QB Ben Roethlisberger (Pectoral/Hip) – Full
LB Melvin Ingram III (Groin) – Limited
WR Chase Claypool (Hamstring) – Full
RB Anthony McFarland (Knee) – Full
OL Zach Banner (Knee) – Full
TE Eric Ebron (Hamstring) – Limited

It is great to see offensive tackle Zach Banner and running back Anthony McFarland practicing fully. Both players have spent the bulk of the season so far on IR and the team can use them this week, especially Banner.

Linebacker Melvin Ingram was limited on Thursday with a groin injury. This goes along with the rumor that Ingram wants out of Pittsburgh and could be traded before Tuesday’s deadline.

The only new name on Thursday’s report is tight end Eric Ebron. The Steelers listed him as limited with a hamstring injury that must have popped up very recently.

Steelers select Maryland safety Antoine Brooks Jr. in the 6th round of the 2020 NFL draft

Pittsburgh adds a thumping strong safety in the sixth round of the NFL draft.

[jwplayer o8ztpEdN-ThvAeFxT]

The Pittsburgh Steelers head back to Maryland in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL for their second Terrapin selection of the day. First, the Steelers chose running back Anthony McFarland Jr. in the fourth round and now they have selected former Maryland safety Antoine Brooks Jr. in the sixth.

The Steelers once again banked on intel from head coach Mike Tomlin and his son Dino as Brooks was teammates with him at Maryland. Brooks is a downhill thumper of a strong safety and excellent tackler. He is built like a linebacker and while he won’t offer much off the ball, he could be solid on special teams and in run support.

So far in this draft, the Steelers have address depth at multiple positions of need including wide receiver, edge rusher, offensive guard, and running back as well as safety with the pick of Brooks.
