Steelers make roster moves as injuries keep mounting

Offensive lineman Matt Feiler was placed on injured reserve, and former Colts EDGE Cassius Marsh was added to the active roster.

Steelers offensive lineman Matt Feiler, who has been playing at left guard since the season began, was placed on injured reserve on Monday. He suffered a torn pectoral early in the Buffalo Bills matchup.

Rookie guard Kevin Dotson (shoulder) entered the game, only to exit in the third quarter.

Steelers head coach will have an update on injuries during his weekly press conference on Tuesday.

Pittsburgh has activated linebacker Cassius Marsh to the 53-man roster. He was signed off the Indianapolis Colts practice squad last week.

Pittsburgh Steelers lose Bud Dupree for the season. What now?

It’s next man up (and then some) for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Steelers’ worst fears were confirmed Thursday morning. Further tests conducted revealed a torn ACL for Steelers linebacker Bud Dupree.

It was crushing for the fourth-year linebacker who was enjoying a stellar season with eight sacks in 11 games. Not only because he was an integral part of a team with Super Bowl aspirations, but it’s all but confirmed to be his last season with Pittsburgh.

There’s no time to dwell on Dupree, though. The show must go on. How will they do it?

The Steelers tagged Bud Dupree in March, knowing full well they could not afford to keep him beyond 2020. Depth at the outside linebacker position became an immediate need for Pittsburgh.

Enter Alex Highsmith, via the third round of the 2020 NFL draft.

Spelling Dupree, Highsmith has 361 snaps (63 run, 59 pash rush, 19 coverage) and contributed one sack, 14 tackles (3 for loss), and a quarterback hit.

In Week 8 versus the Baltimore Ravens, Highsmith came up with a huge interception early in the third quarter. The pick led to an Eric Ebron touchdown, which brought the Steelers within three points of the Ravens, 14-17.

During training camp in August, the Steelers signed Elliott, who was with the team in 2019. In five games and 22 defensive snaps, Elliott logged two tackles. His use was primarily on special teams, though, where he’s appeared in three games this season.

As Steelers Wire’s own Curt Popejoy pointed out earlier, it’ll take a village to replace Dupree’s production. Expect inside linebacker Vince Williams and cornerback Mike Hilton to pick up the slack when needed — which will likely be often.

Beyond that, Christian Kuntz was recently signed to the practice squad. He has collegiate experience at outside linebacker. At Duquesne University, Kuntz logged 248 tackles (71.5 for loss) and a school-record 30.5 sacks.

The Steelers will be trying out free agent outside linebackers in the coming days to add depth to their roster, but this is where it stands right now.

Pittsburgh Steelers place LB Devin Bush on injured reserve

Bush is officially done for the season after tearing his ACL versus the Browns on Sunday.

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced on Friday that second-year linebacker Devin Bush has been placed on injured reserve. He tore his ACL on a non-contact play in Sunday’s clash with the Browns.

“I just want to send out my thoughts and prayers to Devin [Bush] and his family and everything he’s going through right now,” Ben Roethlisberger told Steelers reporters after Sunday’s game. “It just makes you sick when someone, a young player, skilled like that, gets hurt.”

It appears that Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin plans to address the Bush’s void internally with a combination of the reserve inside linebackers. Robert Spillane was named the starter on Wednesday. The third-year player entered Sunday’s game and logged six tackles, including one for a six-yard loss.

Diontae Johnson injury update: The latest on Steelers receiver’s Week 7 status

Steelers practice has come to a close for Wednesday and they’ve provided updates on injuries.

According to the Steelers injury report, wide receiver Diontae Johnson was a full participant in Wednesday’s practice.

Johnson suffered the injury after a direct blow to the back in the Steelers-Eagles Week 5 matchup.

Like most receivers not named Chase Claypool, Diontae has been limited to 147 yards and a touchdown. He has 15 receptions on 24 targets for a completion percentage of 62.5, according to Pro Football Focus.

The Steelers will need every possible offensive weapon they can get when they take on the 5-0 Tennessee Titans at Nissan Stadium on Sunday.

T.J. Watt misses practice with knee injury

The pass-rush monster sat out Thursday’s practice with a knee injury.

Gulp.

Per ESPN’s Brooke Pryor, Steelers linebacker and AFC Defensive Player of the Month T.J. Watt sat out Thursday’s practice with a knee injury. The extent of the injury is unknown.

Watt practiced fully on Wednesday; hopefully, missing practice was just a precautionary measure and nothing serious.

No surprises otherwise with safety Marcus Allen and fullback Derek Watt doubtful for Sunday’s matchup versus the Philadelphia Eagles.
