Report: Matthew Stafford didn’t want to be traded to Washington; had sights set on LA Rams

A report from Adam Schefter shows that Stafford didn’t want to be traded to Washington or Carolina, with his sights set on the LA Rams.

There was a sense of disappointment for many fans of the Washington Football Team over the weekend when we found out that former Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford was being traded to the Los Angeles Rams rather than becoming available for Ron Rivera and Co. to make a deal for.

In the days since, though, it has become clear that Stafford never wanted to go anywhere but LA so he could play with Sean McVay, which ended up being enough to convince LAR to get a deal done by sending some extra capital in the trade.

“The Lions were trying to work with Matthew Stafford,” Schefter said Monday, via NBC Sports Washington. “Matthew Stafford wanted to go to the Los Angeles Rams, that became his No. 1 destination.”

A number of teams were reportedly in the running for Stafford, and Washington was at one point thought to be a front-runner, having offered a first and third-round pick for the veteran QB. But it didn’t matter much in the end.

“He didn’t want to go to Carolina, he didn’t want to go to Denver, he didn’t want to go to Washington, he didn’t want to go to Chicago, Schefter said. “Nothing against any of those franchises, it was the allure of Sean McVay in Los Angeles that made him want to go play there.”

Stafford got his wish, and now he will be in sunny LA looking to make it deep into the playoffs with his new squad. Meanwhile, Washington is still searching for QB ‘X’ with their top option off of the board.

Report: Washington’s offer for Matthew Stafford ‘was better’ than what Lions accepted

The Lions ultimately took a package of 3 future draft picks and a QB for Matthew Stafford, but there’s a belief that Washington’s offer was better.

A massive trade took place on Saturday night, with news breaking that the Detroit Lions were sending QB Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams for a package that included QB Jared Goff, as well as two first-round picks and a third-round pick.

This is a package that is massively bigger than we expected in a Stafford trade, but it makes sense that the Rams had to pay up to get their guy considering the major salary dump that Detroit took on with Goff, who is still owed $43 million in guaranteed money over the rest of his contract.

For Washington fans, it is a bummer that they were unable to land Stafford, but everyone should be okay not sending that many draft picks away in order to get him. However, a report from ESPN’s Josina Anderson shows that Washington’s offer actually might have been better than what Detroit ended up taking.

The keyword here is ‘better.’ That doesn’t mean that Washington offered more draft picks than the Rams did, but it’s believed that the package that was sent from D.C. included more immediate help for the Lions, rather than the package to rebuild with. My interpretation is that Washington probably offered their first-round pick this year, as well as a player that could help Detroit turn things around.

In the end, it doesn’t really matter what Washington offered, because Stafford is in LA. Now we can turn our focus on Deshaun Watson and feel comfortable that Ron Rivera is doing everything he can to land a big fish in D.C.

Report: Washington open to trading more than just a 1st-round pick for QB

In their search for a new QB, a report shows that Washington is willing to part with more than just a 1st-round pick in order to get their guy.

As the trade market for prospective quarterbacks starts to heat up this offseason, it’s becoming clear that the Washington Football Team is doing everything they can to be involved. According to a report from ESPN’s Josina Anderson, Washington is willing to deal more than just a 1st-rounder for a veteran quarterback, assuming it is the right deal.

That could mean, Deshaun Watson, or Matthew Stafford, or Matt Ryan, or Derek Carr, potentially. A lot of players are on the market and potentially looking for new teams, and we can’t rule out that Washington might not be a good landing spot for any of them.

We’ve gone over what it might take to land some top players like Watson or Stafford in the past, and it’s becoming clear that Ron Rivera and his guys are planning to be in the mix.

The Untouchables: 5 players Washington couldn’t part with in a trade for QB ‘X’

There are a lot of ways that Washington could potentially get a trade for a QB done, but these five players might be off-limits.

I know it’s the offseason, but if you were keeping tabs on Washington Football Twitter on Wednesday, then you were in for quite a treat. An asinine suggestion brought on a disagreement and argument between several notable beat reporters, all stemming from the thought that Washington might part ways with a player like Chase Young in a trade for Matthew Stafford.

As is usually the case when it comes to arguing on Twitter, nothing much was settled, and no winner was declared. However, it got us thinking about the real question at hand: Who is on Washington’s No-Trade List?

Depending on the player that they’re trading for, that answer will change, but for the sake of the argument, we are going to keep someone like Deshaun Watson off the board — there’s almost nobody you wouldn’t involve in a trade for him. Bur for someone like Stafford, or Matt Ryan? Is there a handful of guys that Washington would for sure protect? Here’s our list of guys that are off-limits in a trade of such caliber.
