SPECIAL DELIVERY: Why did New Balance send us a BIBLE to unbox?

More Black excellence.

The Special Delivery crew continued to honor Black History Month with another BHM pack. This week’s heat came from New Balance.

As part of their “My Story Matters” collection, New Balance sent over a Bible box with a couple pairs of shoes in it — the 990 and the 574. These shoes were created by a team of Black designers at New Balance to share the themes they thought were most important during Black History Month.

The biggest one? Elevation. The team wanted to make clear that there were so many Black lives and Black stories that needed to be told and that we should do work in telling them all year long — not just in February.

This package tells that story through a song. Which one? You’ll have to watch the video above to find out.

J Cole made a basketball shoe. Really. Unboxing Puma’s BRAND NEW RS Dreamer 2

Seriously.

It’s not necessarily out of the ordinary for a rapper or an entertainer of some sort to have their own signature shoe line.

I mean, think about it. You’ve got folks like Kanye West, Beyoncé, Travis Scott and even Pharrell all with their owns signature shoe lines and their own apparel.

So it makes a lot of sense for a guy like J Cole to have a signature shoe. But for him to have a signature basketball shoe? As a rapper? Yeah, that’s wild.

That’s right. Cole has a signature basketball shoe. The same way that Kyrie Irving has a signature shoe, J Cole has a signature shoe.

And we talk about why it makes sense on this episode of Special Delivery.

Special Delivery: Unboxing Asics latest luxurious look with the ‘Pearl’ Gel-Lyte III

This shoe is more than luxury. It’s also a love letter.

The Asics Gel-Lyte III has always been an absolute cult classic. The silhouette is underrated, but it’s also one of the more creative looks out there with its designers always using a plethora of colorways and materials to explore new looks for it.

This latest “Pearl” colorway from Asics and END is no different. It uses luxury materials to give the shoe one of its latest and cleanest updates.

But it’s also a swan song, of sorts, for Gel-Lyte III creator Shigeyuki Mitsui.

At the end of 2020, Mitsui retired after spending decades designing with Asics. The Gel-Lyte III was his masterpiece. This is one of the final renditions of the shoe that released before he took his leave.

Asics is archiving some of the original colors of the Gel-Lyte III along with him. So while this shoe is the latest, luxurious take on such a classic silhouette, it’s also a goodbye.

Sykes talks about that in this latest episode of Special Delivery, recorded in 2020. You won’t want to miss it.
