Florida projected to play top AAC team in bowl game, per The Athletic

The Athletic has the Florida Gators playing an American Athletic Conference team in their latest bowl projections after the regular season.

The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman and Stewart Mandel have released their latest bowl projections. They have the Gators playing in the Birmingham Bowl in Birmingham, Alabama on Tuesday, Dec. 27, against the Southern Methodist University Mustangs.

SMU finished the regular season with a 7-5 record. Former SMU offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee took over as the Mustangs’ head coach after Sonny Dykes moved across the Dallas-Fort Worth area to TCU. Despite a three-game losing streak against arguably their three toughest opponents (at Maryland, vs. TCU, at UCF). They lost only two games after that three-game stretch, a two-point loss to Cincinnati and a road loss to Tulane.

The Gators finished the season at 6-6, with two consecutive road losses to end the year. Losses at Vanderbilt and Florida State clouded a good back half of the season that saw the Orange and Blue play their most consistent football of the season.

Florida will find out their opponent on Sunday, at the earliest. The College Football Playoff Selection Show will announce the four playoff teams and the New Year’s Six participants. After that has been announced, the individual bowl games will announce their participants throughout the afternoon.
