Charles Davis sends Vikings EDGE rusher, not QB in mock draft

With the top four quarterbacks gone, NFL Network’s Charles Davis sends the Minnesota Vikings Florida State EDGE Jared Verse.

The Minnesota Vikings are in a position where they can go in multiple directions to help build their franchise. The defensive needs pieces on all three levels to continue the growth Brian Flores started last season while the offense is going to need at the very least a quarterback of the future.

In his latest mock draft, NFL Network’s Charles Davis doesn’t have the Vikings taking a quarterback in the first round but rather Florida State edge rusher Jared Verse.

The Vikings boost the pass rush in hopes of overtaking Detroit and Green Bay in the division.

The Vikings boost the pass rush in hopes of overtaking Detroit and Green Bay in the division.

It was a tough draw for the Vikings in this mock draft, as the top four quarterbacks went in the top six.  If that happens and the Vikings don’t re-sign Kirk Cousins, things would be really interesting for the Vikings.

Who could they target in free agency? Sam Darnold? Baker Mayfield? Needless to say, fans wouldn’t be too thrilled.

Second high profile mock draft sends Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy

The latest NFL Mock Draft from ESPN’s Jordan Reid sends the Minnesota Vikings 2 Michigan Wolverines in QB J.J. McCarthy and DT Kris Jenkins.

The quarterback position has been a very popular selection for the Minnesota Vikings. In fact, the position has been mocked to the Vikings 62 times across 236 collected mock drafts through Sunday, March 3rd.

On Tuesday morning, we saw two major industry mock drafts released where the Vikings selected Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy: first from The Athletic’s Dane Brugler and this one from ESPN’s Jordan Reid.

We obviously don’t know if free agent Kirk Cousins will return to Minnesota, but McCarthy fits coach Kevin O’Connell’s scheme so well. Yes, the passing sample size is limited — he only hit 25 or more passing attempts in 12 of 28 career starts — and his combine workout was inconsistent, but his efficiency at Michigan is noteworthy (72.3% completion rate). The infrastructure in Minnesota — with Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison and T.J. Hockenson catching passes — is set up well for a young signal-caller to grow, too.

It didn’t stop there for Reid, as he has the Vikings double dipping with the Maize and Blue in selecting Michigan DT Kris Jenkins at 42nd overall.

Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has leaned on explosiveness in defensive prospects since taking over as Minnesota’s GM. Jenkins has those traits — he posted a 30-inch vertical at 299 pounds — and the Vikings’ defensive line could be headed for some turnover.

This would be a really impressive two-round haul for the Vikings. Getting the quarterback of the future paired with a high-upside defensive tackle is a great start to keeping this team on the right track.

Minnesota Vikings fits at combine: Purple Daily on Draft

On the latest episode of Purple Daily on Draft, the topcs include the NFL Scouting Combine and Kirk Cousins’ contract.

The NFL Scouting Combine has come and gone but not without a lot of intrigue.

The Minnesota Vikings were in Indianapolis to see and interview a multitude of prospects try to earn their way into the National Football League. While the workouts are what are the most visible to the general public, how much do they actually matter?

It’s not to say that they don’t matter at all, but it’s not as simple as a fast 40-yard dash means they are either a good football player or going highly in the NFL draft. What do they mean? How do we put the 40-yard dash record for Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy in terms of his draft stock? Were there players that stood out in a good or bad way?

To end the show, the guys discuss the tampering comments from head coach Kevin O’Connell. What can we take away from those comments?

All of that and more on the latest episode of Purple Daily on Draft, dropping every Monday afternoon on the Purple Daily YouTube channel.

Vikings move up for their quarterback in latest PFN mock draft

Tony Catalina of Pro Football Network has the Minnesota Vikings trading up to #3 in the 2024 NFL draft to take quarterback Drake Maye.

The NFL scouting combine has come and gone, and with it an important piece of the NFL draft puzzle has been filled. Now that teams have the measurements and athletic testing numbers for prospects, they can adjust their draft boards accordingly. A lot of things have changed since the pre-combine mocks, but one thing that hasn’t — at least for Pro Football Network — is the Minnesota Vikings’ need for a quarterback.

The latest mock draft from PFN by writer Tony Catalina has the Vikings being aggressive to fill that need. In his latest, Catalina has the Vikings trading up to the #3 spot to take North Carolina’s Drake Maye. Here’s Catalina’s analysis of the selection:

Drake Maye has some real fans around the league, with multiple teams putting the North Carolina QB on the same level as Williams.

The Vikings share that feeling in this scenario, packaging their first-round pick and other high-ranking selections to swap with the New England Patriots to get their guy.

Maye looks to be the future in Minnesota regardless of what happens with Kirk Cousins, and the Vikings are aggressive in this 2024 NFL Mock Draft to secure the face of their franchise.

According to Catalina, the cost to move up for the Vikings would be their first-round pick, #11, along with their second-round pick, #42, and a first-round pick next year in 2025. Most importantly, the Vikings would keep wide receiver Justin Jefferson, who has been the center of trade rumors recently.

It would be an aggressive move for the Vikings, but if Kirk Cousins isn’t going to be back, it’s a necessary one. Even if Cousins comes back, he’s an aging quarterback coming off a major injury. The plan for the future at QB has to be put into place eventually…what better time than the present?

The Real Forno Show: Combine standouts from the offensive line

On the final day of NFL Scouting Combine testing, the offensive linemen put on a show, including Georgia’s Amarius Mims.

The NFL Scouting Combine is wrapping up with one final day of workouts. After doing interviews with the media and their medical exams in prior days, the fourth group ended up getting onto the field for their workouts.

The fourth and final group was the offensive line and specialists. This offensive line group, especially the tackles, looks to be incredible on many levels and they showed out.

  • What do we make of Georgia right tackle Amarius Mims as a massive human being?
  • The guard or tackle discussion is more complicated with Washington left tackle Troy Fautanu.
  • A record three-cone was set by Wisconsin center Tanor Bortolini. Why does that matter?
  • Should offensive linemen run the 40-yard dash after multiple injuries in the event?

We are here to break it all down and more on the latest episode of The Real Forno Show, airing Monday and Wednesday nights at 6 pm central on the Vikings 1st & SKOL YouTube channel.
