Watch Byron Murphy’s dominant reps in Seahawks Week 1 win over Broncos

Watch Byron Murphy’s dominant reps in Seahawks Week 1 win over Broncos

Seattle Seahawks rookie defensive tackle Byron Murphy II made his official debut in Sunday’s Week 1 victory over the Denver Broncos. Murphy was fairly involved. He played 40 snaps, which accounted for 57.97% of Seattle’s total defensive plays, according to Pro Football Reference.

Mike Macdonald’s defensive line dominated the Broncos up front. Their pass-rush-win-rate (PRWR) of 45% ranked 13th-best across the league in Week 1, per ESPN Stats & Info. Defensive tackle Leonard Williams had the fourth-best PRWR of all qualifying defensive tackles. Boye Mafe recorded one sack and nine pressures, Derick Hall recorded his first career sack, and Dre’Mont Jones was credited with three pressures.

And then there was Murphy, who attacked the Broncos’ overmatched offensive line with leverage and quickness. NFL analyst Doug Farrar recently posted a montage of Murphy’s more dominant snaps. Combing through the tape indicates the former Texas standout enjoyed a highly-successful debut.

Pro Football Focus credited Murphy with recording two quarterback pressures, two hurries, and one stop. His pass-rushing grade was a 63.9, and his run-stopping score was even better, a 68.0. He didn’t necessarily stuff the stat sheet, but that’s why tape is critical. Murphy accumulated several pass-rushing victories that made Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix uncomfortable.

Murphy should enjoy another fruitful showing versus the New England Patriots in Week 2. The Patriots are dealing with injuries across the interior of their offensive line, and Murphy could draw matchups with fellow rookie Layden Robinson, who is playing guard. Seattle’s first-round rookie should carry over his momentum.

Seahawks young pass rushers show growth in Week 1 win

Seahawks young pass rushers show growth in Week 1 win

The Seattle Seahawks entered Sunday’s Week 1 contest versus the Denver Broncos without star pass rusher Uchenna Nwosu, who is nursing a week-to-week knee injury. That placed extra responsibility on the shoulders of young outside linebackers Boye Mafe and Derick Hall. Both players responded with quality performances.

Mafe carried a particularly heavy load in Nwosu’s absence. The former Minnesota Golden Gopher played 60 total snaps against the Broncos. That accounted for 87% of Mike Macdonald’s defensive snaps in Week 1.

Mafe totaled a team-high nine pressures, tied for the most of any pass rusher on Sunday, according to Next Gen Stats. Mafe recorded his first sack of the season, and Pro Football Focus also credited him with seven quarterback hurries. It was a dominant performance from a potentially budding superstar.

Hall was also very effective in a rotational pass-rushing role. The second-round sophomore totaled a more modest 31 snaps, equaling 45% of Seattle’s defensive plays.

Hall converted 23 pass-rushing snaps into four pressures, two QB hits, one sack, and one hurry, per Pro Football Focus’ charting. It was Hall’s first career sack. He appears primed to showcase growth as a sophomore this season.

The Seahawks could be without Nwosu for the next two contests. A two-to-three-game timeline was the expectation when Seahawks general manager John Schneider didn’t place him on IR. Having young pass rushers like Mafe and Hall showcase the desired development is allowing Seattle to get by without their first-choice quarterback hunter.

3 X-Factor Seahawks in Week 1 game against Broncos

3 X-Factor Seahawks in Week 1 game against Broncos

The Seattle Seahawks will begin their 2024 regular-season campaign against the Denver Broncos in Sunday’s Week 1 matchup. It will mark the official debut of the Mike Macdonald era. With that in mind, we’ve identified three Seahawks players who will serve as X-factors towards determining Sunday’s outcome.

Anthony Bradford

Sophomore guard Anthony Bradford won the right guard job, defeating rookie Christian Haynes in a positional battle. Bradford’s Year Two development (or lack thereof) will go a long way towards determining whether the Seahawks’ offensive line improves this season or not. The second-year guard could draw some difficult matchups against Zach Allen and D.J. Jones.

Jarran Reed

Jarran Reed is listed as the starting defensive end for a second consecutive campaign. Dual-threat Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix will be making his debut versus the Seahawks on Sunday. Macdonald’s defense must maintain gap integrity with a balanced pass-rushing plan to keep Nix contained in the pocket. Reed will be crucial to Seattle’s effort to minimize the rookie quarterback’s escapability.

Jerome Baker

Off-ball linebacker Jerome Baker was signed in free agency to help the franchise replace the legendary Bobby Wagner. He missed the majority of spring workouts after undergoing offseason wrist surgery, and later hurt his hamstring that forced him to miss sizable chunks of training camp and all of the preseason. The Seahawks have been ramping up Baker’s practice participation in preparation for Week 1, and he’ll be key to slowing down Broncos running back Javonte Williams.
