Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennadiy Golovkin odds, picks and predictions

Breaking down Saturday’s Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennadiy Golovkin super middleweight fight, with boxing odds, picks and predictions.

In a 12-round championship bout for the IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO World Super Middleweight belts, Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin meet Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Alvarez vs. Golovkin odds, with expert boxing picks and predictions.

The Pay-Per-View broadcast can be viewed on HBO Boxing, with the broadcast starting at 8 p.m. ET. The championship bout is expected to begin approximately at 10:30 p.m.

Canelo is looking to rebound and get his swagger back, after he was defeated by unanimous decision against Dmitrii Bivol at this very same venue in early May. In that bout, he lost the WBA Super World Light Heavyweight bout, so he returns to the middleweight division.

This will be the 3rd fight of the trilogy. These fighters met at T-Mobile Arena in mid-September 2017, and fought to a split-decision draw. That set up a 2nd fight at the same venue, and Canelo scratched out a majority decision win, with 2 judges scoring the fight 115-113, and one calling it 114-114.

Golovkin, a.k.a. Triple G, dropped Ryota Murata at Super Arena Saitama last time out in early April, winning in the ninth round via KO/TKO. He also has a KO win over Steve Rolls, and a pair of decision victories over Sergiy Derevyanchenko and Kamil Szeremeta in his 4 fights since losing to Canelo in Vegas in Sept. 2018.

Canelo vs. Golovkin picks and predictions

Records: Canelo (57-2-2, 39 KOs) | Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs)

Fight result (2-way line or money line)

The difference here is likely to be age. Canelo (-550) is still a rather spry 32, although he has a lot of mileage on his tires with 61 professional bouts.

Golovkin (+330) is now 40 years old for this trilogy fight, and while he still has been performing at a rather high level, for whatever reason, when it comes to fights against Canelo, either the general public, or boxing world seem to not be in Triple G’s corner.

You can’t take Canelo laying 5 1/2 times your potential return, as there is just no money there. Taking a flyer on Golovkin to spring the upset is super tempting, but this isn’t 2017 or 2018. I think the window for Triple G surprises has been slammed shut by Father Time.

The safe play is CANELO TO WIN BY DECISION (-111) with a minimal slap on the wrist in terms of juice.

Over/Under (O/U)

The books are fully expecting this baby to go the distance, and for PPV buyers to at least get their money’s worth. Over 10.5 Rounds (-200) is a little too pricey for my liking, but not declaring a winner, and simply playing YES (-175): FIGHT TO GO THE DISTANCE is a very strong play.

Canelo Alvarez: Potential foes are asking for too much money

Canelo Alvarez is frustrated that potential opponents for his May 2 date are asking for too much money.

Canelo Alvarez is frustrated.

The Mexican superstar is still without an opponent for his annual May fight date and, to him, the reason is obvious.

“Because they want a lot of money,” he told ESPN Deportes. “When they go to fight with Canelo they want the moon and the stars. That is the complication.

“But there are many opponents, and there has to be one out there. I’m ready for anyone.”

Alvarez reportedly is close to a deal to fight super middleweight titleholder Billy Joe Saunders of England on May 2 but we’re heard that refrain before.

Golden Boy Promotions, Alvarez’s promoter, reportedly has made offers — or at least put out feelers — to Saunders, Callum Smith, Caleb Plant, Ryota Murata and who knows who else.

None have been willing to accept the amount of money being offered. Hence Alvarez’s frustration.

Murata, the Japanese middleweight contender, also reportedly was close to a deal but talks eventually cratered. It’s not clear what the reason was. Nevertheless, Alvarez, 29, is set on fighting in the Land of the Rising Sun.

“I want to end the year by fighting in Japan if God is willing. That is the idea,” Canelo said, according to BoxingScene.com.

Murata, a gold medalist at the 2012 London Olympics, was an undefeated professional until he was upset by Rob Brandt in 2018. He avenged the loss the following year with an early knockout. At 34, Murata has yet to face an elite opponent.

An Alvarez-Murata fight is thought to be attractive to streaming app DAZN, which has exclusive rights to Alvarez and maintains a relationship with Murata.

Alvarez also reiterated his desire to some day fight in his homeland of Mexico, which he has not done since 2011.

“Maybe not this year, but the next [year I will fight in Mexico].” Alvarez said. “There are possibilities to return to Mexico. I am delighted to come to Mexico. It can be anywhere in Mexico.”

Canelo Alvarez says he likes idea of fighting overseas

Canelo Alvarez told DAZN during Ruiz-Joshua II that he would be willing fight in Saudi Arabia, England or Japan in the near future.

Boxing’s biggest cash cow may be taking his show on the road.

Two-division titleholder Canelo Alvarez was in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia to support countryman Andy Ruiz Jr. in his highly anticipated heavyweight rematch against Anthony Joshua, who wound up winning a wide decision to regain his heavyweight titles.

Alvarez, who is coming off a 11th round knockout of Sergey Kovalev to win a light heavyweight title, gave an interview during the DAZN broadcast discussing his plans. He, for one, is not opposed to staging his next fight in the Arabian desert.

“Of course, why not?” Alvarez said. “It’s an excellent opportunity. Of course, I can see myself fighting anywhere in the world.”

Alvarez has fought exclusively in North America, with the majority of his fights taking place in Las Vegas. He has also fought in San Antonio and New York City.

Alvarez continued: “I can see myself fighting here (Saudi Arabia), fighting in Japan, in England. Believe me, this is something. What a moment it would be for my career to fight anywhere in the world for the right opportunity.”

In Japan, Alvarez has a potentially lucrative matchup against domestic middleweight star Ryota Murata. Previously, there were talks about Alvarez’s arch-nemesis Gennadiy Golovkin facing Murata at the Tokyo Dome but nothing ever materialized. An Alvarez-Murata fight would be even bigger.

In England, there are options with super middleweights Callum Smith and Billy Joe Saunders, although the former is probably a more marketable fight. Smith’s brain trust have been vocal about facing Alvarez.

Michael Chiesa in for Jorge Masvidal vs. ‘Canelo’ Alvarez: ‘These guys deserve a big payday’

Michael Chiesa wants to see Jorge Masvidal box Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

After Conor McGregor infamously crossed over to boxing to face Floyd Mayweather in a heavily hyped superfight, plenty of MMA fighters have wanted to follow suit.

But if one fighter has the momentum to do so right now, it’s probably [autotag]Jorge Masvidal[/autotag], who has had an incredible 2019, becoming one of the sport’s biggest stars. Masvidal has expressed interest in boxing [autotag]Saul Alvarez[/autotag], the man best known as “Canelo.” Fellow UFC welterweight [autotag]Michael Chiesa[/autotag], for one, is all for it and believes the possibilities for Masvidal are endless.

“Now, the things you can do with Jorge Masvidal, screw it, set up him in a boxing match,” Chiesa told MMA Junkie. “Jorge is in a great position that he can be whatever he wants to be. If he wants to jump into the title fight after (UFC) 245 he can do that. If he wanted to get a boxing match with Canelo Alvarez, you could probably make it happen.

“People love these crossover fights, I don’t disagree with them at all. He’s in a good position, and Nate (Diaz) is, as well, and both guys deserve it.”

Masvidal defeated Diaz at UFC 244 earlier this month, capturing the “BMF” belt and capping off an incredible year. While the introduction of the “BMF” title initially received plenty of criticism, Chiesa liked the concept, and the fact that it resulted in a big event and a big payday for both guys.

“These guys deserve it; these guys deserve a big payday,” Chiesa said. “It’s a polarizing matchup, East vs. West. It’s everything you want as a fan and more, so to make that fight, yeah, you make a frickin’ belt for it. Who cares? Boxing makes weight class and (expletive) all the time.

“There’s a hundred different million weight classes in boxing. Like, who cares if we make up a title for one of the biggest events we’ve had in the last five years. Like, they deserve all that and then some.”

‘Canelo’ Alvarez throws shade at Floyd Mayweather for wanting to box MMA fighters

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez throws shade at Floyd Mayweather for wanting to box MMA fighters.

[autotag]Saul Alvarez[/autotag], the champion boxer best known as “Canelo,” can only laugh off [autotag]Floyd Mayweather[/autotag]’s rumored 2020 comeback.

The two fought in 2013, when Mayweather defeated a 23-year-old Alvarez via majority decision. Since then, Alvarez has captured numerous boxing world titles, winning 11 fights with one draw, and Mayweather remains his only career blemish to date.

Mayweather previously came out of retirement in 2017 to box former UFC double champion Conor McGregor, taking him out in the 10th round. But “Money” proceeded to retire once again after that, though it appears that retirement is also going to be short-lived. Mayweather recently announced he is aiming for a return in 2020 and will be working alongside UFC president Dana White. But exactly what Mayweather has planned in his return remains a bit of a mystery.

Speaking to TMZ, Alvarez said he doubts Mayweather will ever rematch him, and mocked him for going after MMA fighters.

“He’s not going to fight with me,” Alvarez said. “Don’t worry, no. He’s going to take an MMA fighter.”

Alvarez is admittedly a bit limited in his knowledge of English, but he surely can cut a promo. Highly doubtful it will be enough to lure Mayweather into a rematch, though, but no harm in a little fun. Alvarez for one, is certainly not a fan of the MMA crossover, recently dismissing Jorge Masvidal’s offer.
