Jake Paul vs. Canelo Alvarez: Far-fetched or rational in one ($) sense?

Jake Paul vs. Canelo Alvarez: Is the potential matchup far-fetched or rational in at least one ($) sense?

Jake Paul vs. Canelo Alvarez?

Anyone who follows boxing knows that such a matchup would be absurdly one-sided, a crude, relative newcomer against an all-time boxing great. Mismatch isn’t a strong enough word to describe that pairing.

Paul is as aware of that fact as you are. Still, the YouTuber-turned-boxer-and-promoter has repeatedly called out the Mexican star.

Is he nuts? Far from it. He’s an astute businessman who sees an opportunity to make good money, which is what Paul’s boxing career has been all about.

Oh, he has trained diligently in an effort to learn the fundamentals of the sport and seems to have been blessed with natural punching power, which has allowed him to start his career 8-1 (5 KOs) against weak opposition.

However, his principal strength is self promotion. That’s how he has been able to earn more than all but a few boxers in spite of his inexperience.

So no one should be surprised when he calls out potential opponents who are well out of his league, including the 33-year-old Alvarez.

“I think it will happen at some point,” Paul told reporters in the lead up to his fight against Ryan Bourland on the Amanda Serrano-Nina Meinke card Saturday in San Juan, Puerto Rico (DAZN), “I’ve been talking about that for a couple of years now.

“It makes sense. He’s coming to the end of his career where he’s gonna want to make a lot of money.”

Paul, 27, also rolled a lot of eyes when he described himself as the “new Floyd Mayweather.” That’s a stretch on more than one level. Mayweather was the best fighter of his generation and earned around $1 billion, according to some estimates.

At the same time, Paul’s comment is understandable in one sense: Like Mayweather, many boxers and other combat sports stars want to fight Paul because of the payday they would stand to earn.

Retired Hall of Famer Carl Froch is only the latest big-name boxer to express interest in facing Paul.

A reporter asked Paul whether he believes Froch would actually fight him.

“Of course he would, he wants payday, of course,” Paul said. “All these guys would fight me, I’m the new Floyd Mayweather in the sport. Seriously. Because I make my own decisions, I know how to get the business contracts done, I do the biggest PPVs, and I’m my own boss, so I can move and go wherever I want.

“So yes, I am the new Floyd in this sport, and yes, everybody wants to fight me.”

“Everyone” is an exaggeration, but you get his point.

NFL star Tyreek Hill expresses interest in combat sports, fighting Jake Paul

NFL star Tyreek Hill has expressed interest in taking part in combat sports and fighting Jake Paul.

Tyreek Hill might be on the wrong track.

The superstar NFL receiver for the Miami Dolphins said during on the Fully Tilted podcast recently that he would like to give boxing or mixed martial arts a try at some point.

The 29-year-old wants to meet with UFC President Dana White to discuss what it would take to make that transition.

“Just take it to the cage, bro,” Hill said. “That’s why I want to meet Dana White, I want to get in the cage. I want to get in the cage or I want to box.”

And logic evidently tells Hill that he should target as an opponent someone who also has limited experience in the ring or cage. Someone like YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul.

Hill said he boxed growing up, which he feels would be enough for him to compete with an opponent who has only nine pro fights (8-1, 5 KOs).

“My first fight needs to be like Jake Paul or something like that, he said. “… I don’t think [he’s tough]. I grew up boxing.”

The problem for Hill might be that Paul has been in the gym for more than five years. He’s still a work in progress but he has some ability.

Plus, even his critics acknowledge that he has been blessed with good punching power, as he demonstrated once again by stopping Andre August in the first round in December.

Paul undoubtedly would jump at the chance to make that fight. It sounds as if Hill would, too, which might be his mistake.

Paul is scheduled to face boxer Ryan Bourland (17-2, 5 KOs) on Saturday in San Juan Puerto Rico, where local hero Amanda Serrano will defend her undisputed 126-pound championship against Nine Meinke in the main event.

Jake Paul booked vs. former Golden Gloves champ Ryan Bourland for March 2 boxing match

Jake Paul’s journey to become an elite-level boxer continues with a matchup vs. former Golden Gloves champ Ryan Bourland on March 2.

[autotag]Jake Paul[/autotag]’s commitment to building his boxing record takes its next step on March 2, and now he has an opponent.

After previously announcing he would fight in the co-main event under Amanda Serrano vs. Nina Meinke in Puerto Rico, Paul (8-1) finally has his matchup in place as the YouTuber-turned-boxer announced on Tuesday that he will take on former Golden Gloves champ [autotag]Ryan Bourland[/autotag] (17-2) in an eight-round cruiserweight bout that will stream on DAZN.

“I’ve always said my goal is to become a world champion. I beat a pro boxer in December in the first round, someone who’s been boxing their entire life, and what did I do next? I went straight back to camp to get ready to face my next opponent, a professional boxer who has twice as many professional fights under his belt than I do,” Paul said in a press release. “It’s a new year, it’s an even better me, and I’m facing an even more experienced, seasoned boxer on Saturday, March 2 as co-main to the Puerto Rican GOAT, Amanda Serrano. I’m fighting for experience, not for the money, and to show my love for this beautiful island I’ll be donating my entire fight purse from this event to my nonprofit Boxing Bullies to help renovate gyms across Puerto Rico.”

After spending the majority of his early boxing career fighting and beating former MMA standouts such as Ben Askren, Tyron Woodley, Anderson Silva and Nate Diaz, the career philosophy of Paul changed to focus on matchups with opponents who come from boxing backgrounds.

Paul scored a thunderous first-round knockout of Andre August in December, and now he will try to keep that momentum against Bourland, a Golden Gloves Champion, former National Junior Olympian and the first ever two-time GBO light heavyweight champion, who is plotting a shocking performance.

“Jake Paul steps into the ring with his social media clout, but let’s not mistake followers for experience or skill,” Bourland said.. “While he’s been busy chasing likes, I’ve been honing my craft for years, stepping into the ring and beating real boxers. On Saturday, March 2 I will shock the world and put an end to Jake Paul’s boxing career.”

According to the fight announcement press release, Paul will “donate his full fight purse to his nonprofit, Boxing Bullies, to renovate youth boxing gyms across Puerto Rico.”
