  • Money line: Rutgers +280 (bet $100 to win $280) | Illinois -350 (bet $350 to win $100)

  • Over/Under: 136.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Rutgers vs. Illinois: Three things to know

  1. Rutgers beat Illinois 91-88 Dec. 20 in the lone regular-season meeting between the two. The Scarlet Knights, who were 1.5-point home underdogs, were ranked No. 17 at the time, and the Illini were No. 13. Junior G Ron Harper Jr. scored a team-high 28 points for Rutgers, which rallied from an 11-point, first-half deficit, produced an 18-5 run in the second half and held on late for the win.
  2. Rutgers eliminated Indiana 61-50 Thursday in its Big Ten tourney opener. Trailing 48-47 with 9:48 to go, Rutgers held IU scoreless for six-plus minutes to pull away. Harper Jr. led the Knights with 13 points and 11 rebounds, C Myles Johnson added 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds and senior G Jacob Young also scored 13 points. The game finished well Under the O/U line of 129.5.
  3. This will be the Illini’s first game in the 2021 Big Ten tourney. They earned a bye as the second seed. Illinois, winners in 11 of its last 12, enters on a four-game win-and-cover streak. Junior G Ayo Dosunmu leads the Illini with 20.9 PPG and 5.2 APG, while sophomore C Kofi Cockburn pulls down a team-high 9.6 RPG. In the December loss to Rutgers, Dosunmu tallied 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Cockburn had 17 points and 12 boards.

PASS. The Illini are well-rested and won’t have a problem knocking off the Scarlet Knights, but the -350 ML price is too chalky.

Against the spread (ATS)

ILLINOIS -7.5 (-110) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. The Illini’s loss at the Scarlet Knights in December was an anomaly. The Illini are a much better team.

Rutgers – which even with a loss here is expected to earn the program’s first NCAA Tournament bid since 1991 – will run out of gas in the second half since it played the night before.

ATS: Rutgers 13-11-1 | Illinois 16-9-1

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 136.5 (-115) is the way to go. Illinois averages 80.7 PPG; Rutgers scores 70.0 PPG. Plus, the Over is 6-2-1 in the last nine head-to-head contests.

With this being a tournament game, expect more fouls/free-throw attempts than usual down the stretch.

O/U records: Rutgers 11-13-1 | Illinois 14-11-1

Indiana vs. Rutgers odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Thursday’s Indiana Hoosiers vs. Rutgers Scarlet Knights odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks, tips and predictions.

The 10th-seeded Indiana Hoosiers (12-14 overall, 7-12 Big Ten) face the seventh-seeded Rutgers Scarlet Knights (14-10, 10-10) Thursday in the Big Ten Tournament. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Below, we analyze the Indiana-Rutgers odds and lines with NCAA men’s basketball picks and predictions.

Five Big Ten teams are ranked in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports. Four – No. 3 Illinois, No. 4 Michigan, No. 6 Iowa and No. 10 Ohio State – are in the top 10.

The Indiana-Rutgers winner advances to a Thursday quarterfinal matchup against second-seeded Illinois (20-6, 16-4) for a 6:30 p.m. ET tip.

  • Over/Under: 130.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Indiana vs. Rutgers: Three things to know

  1. Rutgers swept IU this season, winning 74-63 as a 3.5-point home favorite in late February and claiming a 74-70 upset as a 5.5-point road underdog in January. Rutgers senior G Geo Baker combined for 39 points and 15 assists. Junior G Ron Harper Jr. tallied 35 points and 20 rebounds in the two victories.
  2. Indiana has fallen apart, dropping five games in a row and six of its last seven. Things are so bad rumors of head coach Archie Miller being fired are rampant. Sophomore G Armaan Franklin, IU’s best 3-point shooter at 45.0% and second-leading scorer with 11.6 points per game, is likely out Thursday due to an ankle injury that sidelined him the last two games. It all revolves around sophomore F Trayce Jackson-Davis, who leads the Hoosiers with 19.1 PPG, 9.0 RPG and 1.4 BPG.
  3. Rutgers rebounded from an ugly 72-51 loss as an 8-point favorite at Nebraska March 1, with a 77-70 overtime victory Saturday as a 3.5-point favorite at Minnesota Saturday. Rutgers was 20-11 last season and would have ended an NCAA Tournament drought dating back to 1991 had it not been for the pandemic shutdown. The Knights likely need two wins in this Big Ten tourney to get an invite Sunday. Harper Jr. leads the Knights with 15.3 PPG, and junior C Myles Johnson grabs a team-high 8.6 RPG.

PASS. Rutgers will win, but the -160 ML price isn’t worth the risk.

Against the spread (ATS)

RUTGERS -3.5 (-110) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. The Scarlet Knights have won the last three in the series and are 5-1 in the last six.

Indiana is a terrible shooting team, hitting just 43.5% from the field. It will only be worse with Franklin out.

ATS: Indiana 12-13-1 | Rutgers 12-11-1

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS even though the 130.5 line seems low. The two regular-season meetings finished Over, but this is on a neutral floor.

While late free throws usually help the Over, the Scarlet Knights are awful at the line. They convert 62.4% of free throws to rank 337th in the country. The Hoosiers aren’t much better at 67.1%.

Indiana at Rutgers odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Wednesday’s Indiana Hoosiers at Rutgers Scarlet Knights odds and lines, with college basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Indiana Hoosiers (12-10 overall, 7-8 Big Ten) visit the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (12-9, 8-9) Wednesday. Tip-off for the conference tilt is slated for 8 p.m. ET at Rutgers Athletic Center in Piscataway, N.J. Below, we analyze the Indiana-Rutgers college basketball odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

The Scarlet Knights are tied for seventh place in the Big Ten, just percentage points ahead of the ninth-place Hoosiers.

Neither team is ranked in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports. Five Big Ten teams are ranked with three – No. 3 Michigan, No. 4 Illinois and No. 5 Ohio State – in the top five.

  • Over/Under: 132.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Indiana at Rutgers: Three things to know

  1. Indiana has alternated wins and losses in its last four outings, suffering a 78-71 setback to Michigan State Saturday as a 6.5-point home favorite.  Sophomore F Trayce Jackson-Davis is third in the Big Ten with 20.2 points per game and second in the conference with 9.4 rebounds per game.
  2. Rutgers is on a 2-game skid and has dropped three of its last four. The Scarlet Knights were upset 68-59 at home by Maryland Sunday as 4.5-point favorites. Junior G Ron Harper Jr. leads the Knights with 15.5 PPG, while junior C Myles Johnson pulls down a team-high 8.5 RPG and is second in the Big Ten with 2.3 blocks per game.
  3. Rutgers upset Indiana 74-70 Jan. 24 behind senior G Gio Baker’s game-high 19 points, including 4 3-pointers. The Scarlet Knights were 5.5-point underdogs and won in Bloomington, Ind., for the first time in four visits.

Indiana at Rutgers: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Rutgers 67, Indiana 60

Money line (ML)

PASS. While I’m calling for a Rutgers victory, the -175 ML price is a bit chalky.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

Bet the SCARLET KNIGHTS -3.5 (-110) for a HALF-UNIT. This may be somewhat surprising, but they’re 4-1 in the last 5 in this series.

The reason for the half-unit play is because is the Hoosiers are so “Jekyll and Hyde.” They tend to play well following a bad outing and are 4-1 ATS after a straight-up loss.

ATS: Indiana 12-9-1 | Rutgers 10-10-1

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 132.5 (-105) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. I’ve mentioned this in almost every Indiana piece I’ve written this season: IU’s backcourt is inconsistent and stinks shooting the ball.

In Saturday’s loss to Michigan State, junior G Rob Phinisee (0-for-6) and senior G Al Durham (0-for-4) were a combined 0-for-10 from the field, including 0-for-6 behind the arc.

Rutgers, which averages 68.1 PPG in Big Ten play, is on a 4-0 Under run and 3-10 O/U in its last 13 games.

Plus, both teams are awful when it comes to free throws. IU shoots 66.7% from the charity stripe, and Rutgers is even worse at 62.5%.

O/U records: Indiana 12-9-1 | Rutgers 9-11-1

Rutgers at Michigan odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Thursday’s Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Michigan Wolverines odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights (12-7 overall, 8-7 Big Ten) visit the Michigan Wolverines (14-1, 9-1) for a Thursday night contest tipping off at 9 p.m. ET at Crisler Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. Below, we analyze the Rutgers-Michigan college basketball odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Michigan is No. 3 in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Rutgers at Michigan: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 8:30 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Rutgers +375 (bet $100 to win $375) | Michigan -500 (bet $500 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Rutgers +9.5 (-110) | Michigan -9.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 136.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Rutgers at Michigan: Three things to know

  1. Michigan is playing its second game since a COVID-19-induced hiatus had the Wolverines on the shelf from Jan. 23-Feb. 13. The Wolverines rank third in the Big Ten in offense (78.9 points per game) and second in defense (64.9 PPG). Since Jan. 6, it has been the defense carrying the water for UM. Over their last six games, the Wolverines are 5-1 and have held foes to 60.2 PPG while allowing a mere 36.4% accuracy mark from the field.
  2. Rutgers is 5-1 over its last six games, and that stretch includes road wins against Indiana and Northwestern. Overall, RU is just 3-4 away from Piscataway. The Scarlet Knights’ offense has often struggled on the road — a team that’s averaging 71.8 PPG (ninth in the Big Ten) has scored fewer than 70 points in five of the seven road contests.
  3. The Maize & Blue are 4-0 against the spread over their last four games at home. Their margin of victory against the number in those four contests is 15.13 PPG.

Rutgers at Michigan: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Michigan 75, Rutgers 64

Money line (ML)

Peg Michigan being a bit north of an 80% proposition to win the game outright. The true odds for both teams are well-bracketed:

PASS.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

Michigan has covered the spread in four straight games against Rutgers and in six of the past eight head-to-head meetings.

The Wolverines’ defense is perhaps underrated. Michigan has athleticism and a mix of youth and veterans that plays into much success at both ends of the floor. The Knights struggle against distance shooting; the Wolverines are strong from beyond the arc and from points just inside it.

On a slight lean due to 9-and-a-hook being a bit rich, TAKE MICHIGAN -9.5 (-110).

Over/Under (O/U)

No lean either way: PASS.

The Hawkeyes are No. 16 in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

  • Against the spread/ATS: Rutgers +6.5 (-110) | Iowa -6.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 151.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Rutgers at Iowa: Three things to know

  1. Iowa escaped with a 77-75 road victory in the first head-to-head meeting with Rutgers this season Jan. 2. Freshman F Keegan Murray (14 points) gave Iowa the lead for good at 76-75 with two free throws at the 17-second mark. The game had six lead changes in the final 1:59 and Rutgers covered the spread as a 3.5-point underdog. The Knights likely would have won had they shot better from the free-throw line where they finished a woeful 4-for-12.
  2. That loss started a five-game skid for the Scarlet Knights, but they have since won four in a row. They most recently claimed a nip-and-tuck battle with Minnesota 76-72 Thursday as a 5.5-point home favorite. Junior G Ron Harper Jr. averages a team-best 16.8 points per game, and junior C Myles Johnson leads the Knights in rebounds (8.9 RPG) and blocks (2.4 BPG).
  3. Iowa was 12-2 in mid-January but has since dropped 4 of its last 5 games. The Hawkeyes’ most recent setback was a 67-65 defeat at Indiana Sunday as a 3.5-point favorite. Senior C Luka Garza finished with 18 points and just 2 rebounds, well below his nation-leading 25.5 PPG and team-best 8.4 RPG.

Rutgers at Iowa: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Iowa 85, Rutgers 81

AVOID. Iowa is 8-2 all time vs. Rutgers, including 3-1 at home. The Hawkeyes should win here, but the -300 ML price is not worth the trouble.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

Back RUTGERS +6.5 (-110). While the Scarlet Knights’ four victories in their current winning streak have come against the lower half of the Big Ten standings, taking the points makes sense here.

The way Iowa has been playing lately – 1-4 straight up and 0-5 ATS – the Hawkeyes are not worthy of being more than 5-point favorites against a good conference foe.

ATS: Rutgers 8-8-1 | Iowa 10-9

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 151.5 (-110) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. Iowa’s 87.8 PPG ranks third in the country and first in the Big Ten. Rutgers averages 72.6 PPG to rank 152nd in the nation and eighth in the conference.

The big issue is Iowa’s defense. It ranks 12th out of the 14 teams in the conference by allowing 75.8 PPG in Big Ten games.

O/U records: Rutgers 9-7-1 | Iowa 12-7

  • Against the spread/ATS: Minnesota +5.5 (-115) | Rutgers -5.5 (-105)
  • Over/Under: 139.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Minnesota at Rutgers: Three things to know

  1. The Golden Gophers fell out of the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll (power by USA TODAY Sports) after an 81-62 road loss to Purdue Saturday. That loss followed a Jan. 23 setback against Maryland and is part of an even larger trend. Since defeating Ohio State Jan. 3, Minnesota has dropped four out of five games. Over that stretch, the Gophers have shot just 36.8% from the floor and 27.5% from 3-point range.
  2. The Scarlet Knights head into this tilt on a three-game win streak, Rutgers has forced 48 turnovers in that stretch. RU has won the turnover exchange in 10 of its last 12 games. The Knights lead the Big Ten in steals at 8.4 per game.
  3. Rutgers G Jacob Young is shooting 54.1% from the floor — including a 42.9% mark from 3-point-land — over his last six games. On the season, Young is Rutgers’ second-leading scorer, at 14.6 points per game. He’s RU’s leading man in steals, with 1.8 thefts per contest.

Minnesota at Rutgers: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Rutgers 71, Minnesota 70

Money line (ML)

The start-and-stop nature of the COVID-19-pocked schedules has affected teams in different ways. The Gophers are playing a midweek game for the first time since Jan. 6. A little game-to-game rhythm could perhaps bolster the visitors here. A Minnesota win isn’t likely, but the price on a road upset is attractive enough to warrant a play on the visiting five.

TAKE MINNESOTA (+185).

Against the spread (ATS)

The Gophers are a higher-tempo team than most: Rutgers is 2-4 straight up and 2-4 ATS over its last six games against foes that fit that profile. Look for enough hidden Minnesota advantage at the foul line and in the turnover exchange that the Gophers can stay within one possession at the end.

TAKE MINNESOTA +5.5 (-115).

Over/Under (O/U)

STEER CLEAR of what looks like a solid total.

Rutgers at Northwestern odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Sunday’s Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Northwestern Wildcats odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights (9-6 overall, 5-6 Big Ten) visit the Northwestern Wildcats (6-8, 3-7) in a Sunday evening contest at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill. Tip-off will be at 7:30 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Rutgers-Northwestern college basketball odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Rutgers at Northwestern: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 8:50 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Rutgers -185 (bet $185 to win $100) | Northwestern +150 (bet $100 to win $150)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Rutgers -3.5 (-115) | Northwestern +3.5 (-105)
  • Over/Under: 140.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Rutgers at Northwestern: Three things to know

  1. After starting the season 6-1, the Wildcats have lost seven in a row. Northwestern’s losing skid has included two home games — both were against ranked foes (Illinois and Iowa).
  2. Rutgers mauled Michigan State by 30 (67-37) at home Thursday. The Spartans committed 19 turnovers and shot just 28.6% from the field. The Scarlet Knights were a plus-7 in the turnover margin and have now been on that side of the turnover ledger in 10 of their last 11 games.
  3. RU took down the Wildcats 77-73 in overtime last season. The Knights were outshot from distance (47.8% to 20.0%), but Rutgers was strong in winning a 44-25 battle on the boards. Over the last seven meetings between the Knights and Wildcats, the visiting team is 5-2 against the spread.

Rutgers at Northwestern: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Rutgers 72, Northwestern 67

Money line (ML)

These two offenses are similar, but Northwestern’s attack has exhibited more downside lately. Rutgers is the lean but not worth a play at -185.

Against the spread (ATS)

The Knights should have a fair measure of confidence after winning on the road at Indiana and then routing MSU. RU can defend mid-range and 3-point jumpers at a high level and is 5-1-1 ATS when following a straight-up win.

The multiple-possession tag here is a little scary, but look for the Knights to get a boost in the hidden-scoring departments of points off turnovers and second-chance points. BACK RUTGERS -3.5 (-115).

Over/Under (O/U)

The lean here is toward a game-flow bell curve hitting on too many numbers between 139-142. PASS.

Michigan State at Rutgers: Three things to know

  1. In the rivals’ first meeting of the season, Michigan State defeated Rutgers 68-45 as a 3-point home favorite Jan 5. The Spartans were led by junior F Aaron Henry’s game-high 20 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks. The Scarlet Knights, who were ranked No. 14 at the time in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports, shot a dismal 30.5% (18-for-59) from the field and 35.3% (6-for-17) from the free-throw line.
  2. Thursday will be Michigan State’s first time in action since Jan. 8 when it lost 55-54 at home to Purdue on Trevion Williams’ 3-pointer with 4.5 seconds left. The next four games were postponed due to COVID-19 issues within the MSU program. 3. Rutgers snapped a 5-game skid with a 74-70 upset at Indiana Sunday. Michigan State at Rutgers: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Michigan State 69, Rutgers 64

Money line (ML)

MICHIGAN STATE (+125) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. The Spartans are a perfect 11-0 all time vs. the Scarlet Knights, including 10-0 since Rutgers joined the Big Ten in the 2014.

Of the 10 Big Ten victories, MSU is 4-0 at Rutgers, winning by an average of 18.0 points. The Spartans’ last two victories there were by 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Against the spread (ATS)

PASS unless you prefer to take the 2.5-points of insurance with Michigan State +2.5 (-105) over counting on an outright win.

ATS: Michigan State 3-9 | Rutgers 6-7-1

Over/Under (O/U)

Back the UNDER 142.5 (-110) with a HALF-UNIT bet. The Scarlet Knights averaged 63.9 PPG in their last six games. The Spartans, who could come out a little rusty, averaged 67.2 in their last six games.

O/U records: Michigan State 6-6 | Rutgers 8-5-1

  • Against the spread/ATS: Rutgers +3.5 (-110) | Indiana -3.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 133.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Rutgers at Indiana: Three things to know

  1. Rutgers enters on a 5-game slide, most recently dropping a 75-67 decision at Penn State Thursday. The Scarlet Knights, who were 2.5-point favorites, trailed the entire game after the Nittany Lions scored the first basket en route to their first Big Ten victory of the season. Junior G Ron Harper Jr. leads Rutgers with 18.6 points per game, and junior C Myles Johnson averages a team-high 8.6 rebounds per game.
  2. Indiana is coming off a surprising 81-69 road upset of No. 4 Iowa Thursday as a 10-point underdog. Sophomore F Trayce Jackson-Davis scored 23 points with 7 rebounds and the Hoosiers defense held the nation’s second-highest scoring team to a season low – the Hawkeyes were averaging 92.2 PPG. Indiana trailed 53-44 with 12 minutes to go before going on a 23-3 run and holding Iowa without a field goal for an 11-minute stretch. Jackson-Davis leads IU with 20.6 PPG and 8.8 RPG.
  3. Rutgers won the lone meeting between the two schools last season 59-50 as a 4-point home favorite. Indiana leads the all-time series 7-3, including 3-0 at home and 6-3 in Big Ten games – Rutgers joined the Big Ten for the 2014-15 season.

Rutgers at Indiana: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Indiana 69, Rutgers 58

Money line (ML)

AVOID. Look for Indiana to follow up its biggest win of the season with an impressive showing at home; however, I’m going to PASS on the -165 juice and focus on the spread.

Against the spread (ATS)

INDIANA -3.5 (-110) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. The Scarlet Knights are on an 0-4 ATS run and now they have to face a Hoosiers squad that might have just figured things out.

Plus, the home team is 5-2 ATS in the last seven of this series. This doesn’t bode well for Rutgers.

ATS: Rutgers 5-7-1 | Indiana 10-5

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 133.5 (-110) is worth a HALF-UNIT wager. If Indiana can duplicate the defense it threw at Iowa, Rutgers, which is 1-4 O/U in its last five games, might not reach the 60’s.

O/U records: Rutgers 7-5-1 | Indiana 7-8
