How did four-star Rowan Byrne’s visit to Rutgers football go this week?

Rowan Byrne updates his recruitment after a Rutgers football visit this week.

Rowan Byrne visited Rutgers football on Thursday, giving the Big Ten program a chance to further connect with the four-star offensive lineman.

Byrne is a standout at Iona Prep (New Rochelle, New York). He is one of the top players in the Northeast and is the No. 242 recruit in the nation according to On3.

There is no shortage of programs in after Byrne, who holds offers from Baylor, Boston College, Duke, Florida State, MichiganNotre DameOhio State and Rutgers among others.

Rivals ranks him as the top player in New York in the 2025 cycle. Last year, K.J. Duff, the top-ranked player in New York, committed to Rutgers (Duff was recently named a top-10 tight end in the nation by On3).

Byrne’s visit included time spent with Scott Vallone, the offensive line assistant at Rutgers.

“It was a great day – I got to spend a lot of one-on-one time with coach Vallone,” Byrne told RutgersWire on Friday.

“But I also spent a lot of time with the players, they’re great guys. I really liked them. And I got to see the offensive line during meetings which was great too. I really saw a fit.”

Rutgers was among the first programs to offer Byrne, but he is certainly seeing his recruitment grow as one of the nation’s top interior offensive linemen. A good visit this week means for Byrne that Rutgers “Stayed in my top group, up there with a few other schools.”

The time with Vallone was beneficial for Byrne as it gave him some insight into his coaching style. Vallone works alongside Pat Flaherty, the offensive line coach at Rutgers.

“Definitely my time talking football with coach Vallone, the way he teaches really sticks to me,” Byrne said of what stood out from the visit.

“He’s a phenomenal coach, genuinely. and my time sitting in the meeting and then spending time with the players – those guys are awesome. I felt like I really fit in with them which is awesome.”

Byrne is planning to visit Rutgers for a visit to spring practice.

Four-star Rowan Byrne is set to visit Rutgers football this week

Rowan Byrne will visit Rutgers football this week.

Four-star offensive lineman Rowan Byrne will be at Rutgers this Wednesday as the Big Ten program is trending well with the standout from New York.

Byrne had a strong junior season for Iona Prep (New Rochelle, New York) before fracturing his fibula and suffering a grade III high ankle sprain back in early October. He is among the most highly-recruited offensive linemen in the nation with offers from Baylor, Boston College, Duke, Florida State, MichiganNotre DameOhio State and Rutgers among others.

He is the No. 1 ranked player in New York according to Rivals. Last year, K.J. Duff, the top-ranked player in New York, committed to Rutgers.

Rutgers and head coach Greg Schiano has been on Byrne for a long time and it is paying off. Byrne said of his interest in the school that “They are 100 percent (in contention for me). I love Rutgers.”

“The visit with Rutgers was great,” Byrne told Rutgers Wire this week.

“I love coach Schiano, he’s got a serious vision for the program – a lot of coaches do – but what’s different is it’s coming together and we’re seeing each year the progress he’s making and what he’s talking about is truly happening.”

Another component of the Rutgers recruitment effort is Byrne’s emerging relationship with Pat Flaherty. The Rutgers offensive line coach is the most experienced coach at his position in Power Five football.

Flaherty spent over two decades in the NFL as an offensive line coach. He won two Super Bowl rings with the New York Giants.

“It’s developed well, he is one of the best offensive line coaches ever and that speaks for itself,” Byrne said.

“But he’s a great man too.”

As would be expected, Byrne is busy with his recruitment. His rehab for his season-ending injury is on schedule and he has a full schedule of visits this month.

“I plan on being at Rutgers tomorrow (Wednesday),” Byrne said.

“I was at Penn State on Saturday and might be at Michigan this weekend.”

Byrne is looking to make a commitment potentially in June.

Rowan Byrne’s recruitment continues to build momentum, this as the four-star offensive lineman is looking to cutdown his offer list in the coming weeks.

At 6-foot-5 and 295 pounds, Byrne was impressive in the first half of his junior season for Iona Prep (New Rochelle, New York). He fractured his fibula and had a grade III high ankle sprain back in early October.

Ohio State offers 2025 New York offensive tackle while on campus

Ohio State offers the big New Yorker #GoBucks

[autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] football held a recruiting even on Friday evening and there were some fireworks at 2026 wide receiver Chris Henry Jr. made his verbal commitment.

Not to be overshadowed by the Buckeye BOOM! was head coach [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] and offensive coordinator [autotag]Justin Frye[/autotag] offering 2025 New York offensive tackle [autotag]Rowan Byrne[/autotag].

The 6-foot, 6-inch, 295-pound tackle doesn’t have a ranking due to the early nature of his class, but he’s worthy of the offer. Ohio State has followed Notre Dame, Penn State, Michigan, and others in offering Byrne.

It most likely won’t be the last recruiting tidbit that we hear about this weekend with Aaron Scott’s pending announcement, but this is a significant offer and shouldn’t get lost in the shuffle.

At the current moment, Ohio State has two commitments in the 2025 class, quarterback Tavien St. Clair and cornerback Jontae Gilbert.

Update: Gilbert has since decommitted following this post.

For four-star Rowan Byrne, latest trip to Rutgers football had him ‘feel at home’

Rowan Byrne was on campus this weekend to check out a Rutgers football practice.

This past weekend, Rutgers football hosted Rowan Byrne, a class of 2025 offensive lineman who is on the verge of becoming a national recruit.

Earlier this month, Byrne was named a four-star by On3 Sports and was ranked the top recruit in New York in the 2025 class. The offensive tackle from Iona Prep (New Rochelle, N.Y.) already has an impressive offer list.

So far in his recruitment, Byrne has been offered by Boston College, UConn, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Rutgers and Syracuse.

Last summer, Rutgers football got involved early with Byrne, offering him at a camp.

The visit on Saturday was a chance for Byrne to check out Ajani Sheppard, his former teammate at Iona Prep. The quarterback is settling in at Rutgers as a true freshman.

[lawrence-related id=25847]

“(This weekend) was amazing really loved my time out there, I feel at home at Rutgers and get treated like family there,” Byrne told Rutgers Wire.

“And Ajani’s told me the coaches keep the same family treatment once you’re there which is something I want to be a part of! Really liked watching the team practice and Coach Flats (offensive line coac Pat Flaherty), Vallone (offensive line assistant Scott Vallone) and others coach their tails off.”

Byrne was scheduled to make a mid-week visit to Minnesota then he will take the rest of the week off to enjoy his spring break.

[lawrence-related id=25811]

One of the opportunities from the weekend visit with Rutgers included connecting with the aforementioned Flaherty, the new offensive line coach. A veteran NFL coach, Flaherty is perhaps best known for being the offensive line coach for the New York Giants when they won their last two Super Bowls.

“My relationship with Coach Flats is great we talked a lot (on Saturday) just getting to know me better as a man and player and then got to discussing football the offensive line how it’s looking, scheme, and the direction of the unit,” Byrne said.

“Supposed to have a film session today but got caught up with other things, next time we’ve got a film session I’ll definitely be on campus lots love it there! Coach Flats and I are developing a great relationship!”

The direction of the program and the rebuilding effort under head coach Greg Schiano is something else that Byrne noticed. The program has a talented group of underclassmen that, couple with some new experienced coaches gives credence to the narrative that Rutgers football is set to take a step forward over the next year.

“Yes, most definitely, the vision for the future is strong and it seems things are falling into place,” Byrne said.

“It’s a great program and it seems like the team will be good this year as well which is big for me. An exciting time for sure and big for Rutgers football.”
