Ray Allen III announces college plans

Son of NBA legend makes college decision

Ray Allen III, the son of NBA legend Ray Allen has announced his college decision. He will play his college basketball not too far away from the city where his dad spent a considerable portion of his career.

The decision was first reported by Rhode Island basketball color analyst Chris DiSano on Twitter.

The 6-foot-1 guard out of Gulliver Prep located in Miami, Florida, Allen III received scholarship offers from UMass and Rutgers in his recruitment but never truly saw his recruiting pick up leading to his walk-on commitment to Rhode Island.

The class of 2023 prospect will be walking on at the University of Rhode Island. The Rams are coming off a tough 2022-2023 season, going 9-22 including 5-13 in conference play. They’ll be in their second year under head coach Archie Miller who previously coached at Dayton and Indiana.

Per MaxPreps, Allen III averaged 9.9 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game over 28 games played this past season for Gulliver’s Prep while averaging 14.6 minutes a contest.

Allen’s father, Ray Allen Jr., was a two-time NBA champion, 10x NBA All-Star, and is considered one of the best three-point shooters in NBA history. Allen Jr. played from 2007 through 2012 with the Boston Celtics, just an hour and a half down I-95 from Kingston, Rhode Island, where the University of Rhode Island is located.

Gators offer Rhode Island defensive back in transfer portal

The Gators are still browsing the transfer portal for defensive backs to add and just offered former Rhode Island safety Antonio Carter II.

The Florida Gators are still looking at defensive backs in the transfer portal, and one name that has stood out is former Rhode Island Rams safety [autotag]Antonio Carter II[/autotag].

Carter picked up an offer from the Gators on Monday and announced the news to the public on social media. Ole Miss and Wisconsin have already hosted him on official visits, and Carter is set to stop by Notre Dame on Wednesday. Kentucky is also on the schedule for the weekend and is considered a major player.

Florida has already added Michigan safety transfer RJ Moten, but it’s clear that the Gators are still in the market for another defensive back. He could end up playing time at cornerback or safety.

Getting Carter on campus is the next step if UF wants to be considered a serious threat.

Carter is a Florida native who played his high school ball out of Orlando. A low-recruited prep player, plenty of Power Five programs are interested in him now that he’s transferring.

He made 60 total tackles (40 solo) over 11 games played in 2022 and collected 4.5 tackles for a loss, one sack, one interception, 11 pass deflections and two forced fumbles.

Carter has two years of eligibility remaining.

Former Alabama 4-Star Alex Tchikou transferring to Detroit Mercy

Former Alabama forward Alex Tchikou is transferring to Detroit Mercy. He spent last season at Rhode Island before re-entering the transfer portal this off-season.

Former Alabama forward Alex Tchikou is transferring from Rhode Island to Detroit Mercy. Tchikou spent last season with the Rams.

Tchikou committed to Alabama out of high school. The France native chose the Crimson Tide over other programs like Arizona, Florida State, and Oregon. He was regarded as a four-star coming out of Dream City Christian High School in Glendale, Arizona.

Prior to the start of his freshman season, Tchikou suffered a ruptured achilles causing him to miss the entire season.

As a reshirt-freshman, Tchikou played in just three games for the Crimson Tide.

Following the season, he entered the transfer portal and committed to Rhode Island. In one season with the Rams, Tchikou averaged 4.1 points per game and 3.5 rebounds per game.

Following his redshirt-sophomore season, he entered the transfer portal yet agin. He will be heading to the Horizon League to play for Detroit Mercy next season. With the Titans losing their all-time leading scorer in Antoine Davis, Tchikou could prove to be a key piece to the puzzle next season.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the Alabama basketball program.

Former Alabama forward Alex Tchikou set to enter NCAA transfer portal for second time

Former Alabama and Rhode Island forward Alex Tchikou has entered the transfer portal. Thcikou will be looking to play for his third school.

Former Alabama forward Alex Tchikou entered the transfer portal on Wednesday afternoon.

At Alabama, Tchikou played in just three games. He was not used as a piece of the Crimson Tide’s rotation in 2021-2022. Soon after the season concluded, he entered his name into the transfer portal.

He ultimately decided to transfer to Rhode Island. In one season with the Rams, Tchikou averaged 4.1 points per game, 3.5 rebounds per game, and 0.3 assists per game. He also shot 48.1% from the floor.

There is a chance that Tchikou would have to sit out next season considering it will be his third school in three years. The NCAA recently granted athletes a one-time transfer rule that allows them to play immediately without sitting out a season. Given that, Tchikou was eligible to play immediately at Rhode Island. That will likely not be the case at his next school.

Several schools that recruited him heavily out of high school are Arizona and St. Mary’s. With limited production, Tchikou could wind up playing at a smaller program. It will be interesting to see which programs reach out to the France native.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the Alabama basketball program as well as transfer portal news.

Wisconsin offers Rhode Island transfer cornerback

The Badgers offered Antonio Carter, a transfer cornerback from Rhode Island on Wednesday.

The Badgers offered Antonio Carter, a transfer cornerback from Rhode Island on Wednesday. The 6-foot-1, 187 pound athlete still has multiple years of eligibility.

Carter recorded 55 tackles, 10 pass deflections, two forced fumbles and an interception with the Rams in 2022 and has increased his production over each of his three years at Rhode Island.

With Luke Fickell and Mike Tressel coming to Madison from Cincinnati this offseason, the Badgers’ defense is expected to remain one of the best in the nation and could certainly benefit from adding an experienced option to their secondary.

Wisconsin has already secured former three-star safety Jason Maitre in the transfer portal from Boston College.

Robert Kraft gifts Patriots’ plane to University of Rhode Island for trip to Towson

Robert Kraft came up big for the University of Rhode Island football team

Talk about going from the drudgery of an 8-hour bus trip to traveling in style.

The University of Rhode Island was bringing its undefeated record to face Towson in Maryland on Saturday.

The trip looked like it was going to be a journey on the road before New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft stepped up in a big way.

Kraft offered the Rams the Patriots’ team plane for the trip. New England didn’t need it this week since the Patriots are home to the Dallas Cowboys.

Per Patriots.com:

The buses hit the road, and as they passed exit after exit, the players started to get suspicious that they were actually heading to T.F. Green airport. Maybe head coach Jim Fleming had managed to secure a charter flight after all. He had requested the AirKraft but expected to pay for it from the team’s budget.

“I almost fell out of my seat … It’s incredible for us,” Fleming told the Patriots’ website. “It’s an incredible show of support. It’s visible and recognizable by everybody. It probably enhances our opportunity to go out and play as best we can and try to get another W.”

As the buses pulled onto the tarmac, the only plane in sight was distinct. With six Lombardi trophies and “Patriots” emblazoned on the side, AirKraft hard to mistake. Slowly, it clicked.

“It’s a pretty cool feeling … You don’t think that you’re going to be taking an NFL team’s plane,” said redshirt senior Henry Yiankopolos. “It’s pretty surreal to take the Patriots plane because a lot of us are Patriots fans.”

This isn’t the first time Kraft lent the plane out to a local team. Just this summer, Kraft surprised the Boston Renegades by flying the team to the WFA Championship in Canton, Ohio, where they won their sixth title.

WR Isaiah Coulter is bringing a chip on his shoulder to the Texans

Fifth-round receiver Isaiah Coulter says that he is bringing a chip on his shoulder as he joins the Houston Texans.

Former Rhode Island Rams receiver Isaiah Coulter caught 72 passes for 1,039 yards and eight touchdowns in his junior year.

However, it was his nine catches for 152 yards in a 34-17 loss to Virginia Tech that led the 6-3, 190-pound wideout to believe that he could play in teh NFL.

“I feel like I’ll handle it great,” Coulter told reporters on April 25 after being selected 171st overall in Round 4 of the 2020 NFL Draft. “I play with a chip on my shoulder. I’m ready to just come in and help any way I can.”

Coulter is aware that he is coming from a smaller school, and he is well aware that he constantly has to prove himself on a daily basis.

However, the Brandywine, Maryland, native didn’t just wake up one day and decide he could play at the pro level. In his sophomore season, he caught 42 passes for 604 yards and three touchdowns. In order to reach the 1,000-yard mark receiving, it took preparation and focus in the offseason.

Said Coulter on what helped him improve between his sophomore and junio year: “I would just say taking my craft serious in the offseason. Not taking a lot of time off, just really digging into my weaknesses and just trying to improve and get better, whether it’s in the film room watching — just seeing little things that I could do better.”

One of the areas that Coulter spent time was his route running and how he came in and out of his breaks. It was all part of a concerted effort on Coulter’s part to take his offseason seriously and love the game of football as part of a daily ritual of improvement.

Coulter will have his chances to impress receivers coach John Perry and offensive coordinator Tim Kelly. While the Texans do have Will Fuller, Kenny Stills, Brandin Cooks, and Randall Cobb ahead of him, DeAndre Carter, Keke Coutee, and Steven Mitchell are receivers who will similarly be battling for a spot on the 53-man roster.

Dayton at Rhode Island college basketball odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Wednesday’s Dayton Flyers at Rhode Island Rams sports betting odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks and best bets

The Dayton Flyers (27-2, 16-0 Atlantic-10) visit the Rhode Island Rams (20-8, 12-4) Wednesday in an Atlantic-10 battle at Thomas M. Ryan Center in Kingston, RI. Tip-off is set for 9 p.m. ET. We analyze the Dayton-Rhode Island odds and betting lines, with college basketball betting advice and tips around this matchup.

Dayton at Rhode Island: Three things you need to know

  1. Rhode Island has dropped three of its last five games. The stretch started with an 81-67 loss at Dayton Feb. 11. The Rams shot just 28.8% (19-for-66) from the floor. In the game prior (Feb. 8 at George Washington), Rhode Island shot 42.9% (9-for-21) from 3-point range in cobbling together a 59.8% effective field-goal percentage (a measure which equalizes 3-pointers at 33% and 2-pointers at 50%). Since then, the Rams have shot 27% from beyond the arc and 38% overall.
  2. The Flyers, ranked third in the USA Today Sports Coaches Poll, have already clinched the A-10 regular-season title, but they still have a chance to run through the league undefeated by winning Wednesday at Rhode Island and then Saturday against George Washington. UD hasn’t lost since dropping a 78-76 overtime game to the Colorado Buffaloes Dec. 21. In a relatively low-scoring league, the Flyers are averaging 80 points per game. Dayton leads the nation in effective field-goal accuracy, with a 59.7% mark.
  3. The Rams are an A-10 outlier with an up-tempo style of play. In possessions per game, URI ranks 40th in the nation. Dayton is 6-0 straight-up (3-3 against the spread) against teams in the top 25% in tempo. The ATS losses were in non-conference play in games mostly lined as 20-point routs.

Prediction

Dayton 76, Rhode Island 71

Moneyline (ML)

Dayton has been exceptional on the road. The Flyers are a highly effective shooting team that plays lock-down defense in preventing anything close to average at the other end.

The DAYTON (-182) line here has moderate-to-significant value and is worth a play.

Against the Spread (ATS)

UD’s Feb. 18 contest at VCU stands as a solid comparison for this road game. The Flyers covered a -3 spread with a bucket in the final minute.

The line here — DAYTON -3.5 (-115) — makes for a slight lean on the Flyers.

Over/Under (O/U)

Close games for both the Flyers and Rams have landed on both sides of totals in equal measure. The last meeting between UD and URI went Over by a point-and-a-half. The solid-comp game at VCU spelled an easy Under.

PASS on the O/U (Over: -121, Under: +100).
