Lovie Smith showed frustration over reporters’ fascination with Brandin Cooks’ situation in his postgame presser

Smith was ready for reporters to move on from their lines of questioning regarding the #Texans’ star receiver on Thursday night

Lovie Smith was not pleased with the fixation that some reporters had on the Brandin Cooks situation that has developed since the Houston Texans failed to deal the star receiver at the trade deadline. After a hard-fought game where his team held their own until the fourth quarter, Smith was ready to answer questions regarding his team’s performance but was met with a barrage of inquiries regarding his top receiving threat, who was absent for the matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday.

Cooks had missed two practices during Houston’s abridged preparation schedule following their loss to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. Smith made the executive decision to sideline him due to his lack of involvement in the game-planning process, and after fielding his fourth question on the matter, he had had enough.

“You know what, guys, I think we’ve talked enough about it,” Smith exclaimed. “Brandin [Cooks] didn’t play. All right? I told you he will be back in the building tomorrow. If you want to talk about the game, we can do that. As far as the captain, we have two offensive captains each game. Today LT (Laremy Tunsil) was our captain. I thought he represented the team well.”

One would be hard-pressed to not be able to sympathize with Smith’s situation in this regard. Cooks took to Twitter when the trade deadline passed to express his frustration and was listed as a non-participant in practice due at least in part to “personal” reasons. Smith had two options: to play a receiver who clearly had his mind on things that didn’t involve winning football games or to bench him while tempers were flaring and give his younger talent a chance to shine in primetime.

The choice was obvious, and Smith made the best decision possible given the circumstances. Texans fans might not like the idea of the team’s best receiver sitting against the NFL’s best squad by record, but it is unlikely that Cooks was in a position to contribute significantly given that he is in a headspace that necessitated that he miss time in practice.

Houston will look to move on to their Week 10 matchup against the bourgeoning New York Giants next week, and hopefully get their star receiver’s situation figured out to give their offense a shot in the arm that they desperately needed against Philadelphia.

Seattle Seahawks safety Jamal Adams is going into Week 3’s matchup against his hometown team, the Dallas Cowboys, with a chip on his shoulder. Adams alleges that a few Dallas players privately commented that he does not fare too well in coverage.

“I’ve seen a couple things, they said I struggle in coverage, so I can’t wait,” Adams said Thursday. “I got a little text from one of my buddies back home. He has the inside scoop on that. So, looking forward to it.”

However, Adams refused to reveal the identity of his insider when reporters pressed him about it but stated that he is always given the news in Dallas.

“I can’t tell you that, man,” he confessed. “C’mon. I can’t give you the nuggets like that, man. I grew up with a couple guys who are still my brothers, best friends to this day. We talk every day, group messaging. What goes on in Dallas, it always comes back to me. I always find out the scoops. So just a little edge, a little chip on my shoulder to go out there and continue to do what I’m doing. Obviously, things happen. It’s part of the game. And hey, just looking forward to the matchup.”

Adams made it clear that he is well aware of the explosive potential of the Cowboys offense but is ready to step up to the challenge.

“We’ve got our hands full,” Adams said. “It’s going to be exciting. It reminds me of Atlanta in a sense of what type of explosion they have at receiver, if that makes sense. Not comparing them, but just saying that they have some explosive guys on their side that can make a lot of plays. So we have to do a good job of doing our thing and plastering them and covering them.”

The Seahawks will play the Cowboys on Sunday, Sept. 27 at CenturyLink Field at 1:25 p.m. PT.

Shaquill Griffin waiting for brother Shaquem’s 1st NFL sack

Seattle Seahawks cornerback Shaquill Griffin is excited to watch his twin brother Shaquem get chances to prove himself in the NFL.

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Shaquem Griffin has seen an increase in playing time since Week 10. He was on the field for 33% of the team’s snaps in their 17-9 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles and recorded a tackle and two quarterback hits.

Griffin’s twin brother and fellow Seahawks defender, Shaquill, is thrilled to see him receive opportunities to prove himself in the NFL.

“It’s been crazy just to see him out there,” Shaquill told 710 ESPN Seattle on Tuesday. “It’s a feeling that we’ve been looking forward to for a long time and it’s awesome to see the organization give him a chance and let him do what does, and that’s just play fast. And then when he lines up on the same side as me, it’s a great feeling. I remember my mom texted me after the game, was just like it just gave her chills to see us on the same side again. It’s just awesome to see him actually make the plays that he’s been making.”

Shaquill believes Shaquem is on the cusp of notching the first sack of his NFL career and can’t wait to see the play in person.

“We still got some games left, it could possibly still happen,” Shaquill said. “I just know every time he makes a play, it makes me want to make a play, so that’s that little rivalry we’ve always had. It’s cool to have that little friendly competition on the field. It’s good to have that back.”

Shaquem will have another opportunity to make plays and perhaps get his first sack against the Minnesota Vikings this week during “Monday Night Football.”
