Updated Saints injury report adds yet another DNP on the offensive line

The updated Saints injury report added yet another DNP on the offensive line. They’re going to have a tough time against the Chiefs if these injuries persist:

The New Orleans Saints’ Friday injury report only made matters worse for the already banged up offensive line, as guard/center Lucas Patrick (groin) was added to the list of non-participants today. The potential loss of Patrick for Monday nights’ game in Kansas City, would likely mean that the entirety of the interior starters would be out next week. Already down Erik McCoy (hernia) and likely down Cesar Ruiz (knee) and Shane Lemieux (ankle), it could be an incredibly scary sight going up against All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones in this game. Klint Kubiak and the offensive staff will almost definitely have to pull some tricks out of the hat to cover these blows.

Some other notables were that kicker Blake Grupe (right hip) was back in the lineup after not practicing Thursday as well as tight end Juwan Johnson (forearm) and running back Kendre Miller (hamstring) who were back as full participants after being limited. Tackle Taliese Fuaga (back) added knee to his back injury but was still limited once again. The other notable was that receiver A.T. Perry disappeared from the list, who we found was waived earlier today by the team.

Other than that, it was more of the same with a handful of guys status in doubt. Willie Gay (hand), Taysom Hill (rib) and Payton Turner (knee) were the other non-participants on Friday. It doesn’t look like Willie Gay will be up this week after checking out his recent Instagram post but Hill and Turner could possibly make their way to active status with an extra rest day this week. Dennis Allen said earlier in the week that Taysom does in fact have broken ribs similar to what running back Alvin Kamara was dealing with last week. This could leave the potential for Hill possibly making an effort to get out there on Monday depending on the severity. Only difference is that Hill did sustain the same injury on the opposite side of his body just two weeks ago. Although there’s a chance it is probably safe for the team to be cautious on Hill as it seems they’re a bit of a different team with him available.

Here is the full list of injuries after Friday’s practice:

Report: Chiefs WR Rashee Rice ‘walking about normally’ amid injury concerns

According to a report, #Chiefs WR Rashee Rice was seen “walking about normally” in Kansas City’s locker room on Thursday.

The Kansas City Chiefs still haven’t revealed key details about the knee injury that wide receiver Rashee Rice sustained in the defending champions’ win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

While Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has made it clear that Kansas City is monitoring Rice, and that an update will be provided when the team is certain of his status, one member of the media had some good news to report on Thursday.

Pete Sweeney, Editor-in-Chief of Arrowhead Pride, told his followers on Twitter that he saw Rice “walking about normally” in Kansas City’s locker room this afternoon, and indicated that the star pass catcher was not in crutches.

Though Sweeney’s observation hardly indicates that Rice’s injury isn’t severe, it does bode well for the Chiefs that he can walk without assistance.

Stay tuned to see if Kansas City makes any further announcements about Rice’s injury status ahead of the Chiefs’ Week 5 matchup against the New Orleans Saints on “Monday Night Football.”

Report: Davante Adams’ top trade target has emerged

The New Orleans Saints remain in the mix for Davante Adams, but the New York Jets have emerged as his top trade target:

When it was originally reported Davante Adams requested a trade from the Las Vegas Raiders, it was said  he had two preferred destination — the New Orleans Saints or New York Jets. He would accept a trade to other destinations, but he would land on one of those two teams if he was given his pick.

The appeal for both destinations are similar, but per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Jets are at the top of Adams’ wish list. This doesn’t remove the Saints from the mix, but it does drop them down a level in the pecking order.

The Jets have Aaron Rodgers, his quarterback with the Green Bay Packers. The Saints have Derek Carr, Adams’ collegiate quarterback and the reason he went to Vegas. Both teams have young Ohio State wide receivers in Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson, as well, who Adams could mentor.

While the Saints may still be high on Adams’ list, there appears to be a separation from the Jets at the top and the rest of the pack. Originally, it seemed the Saints and Jets were evenly matched, and then this separation emerged.

On the bright side, teams tend to trade talented players like Adams out of the conference. And ultimately Adams won’t choose where he goes since he doesn’t have a no-trade clause or other leverage. The Raiders will take the best offer. That could give New Orleans an edge if they have to spend more to get some help maneuvering around the salary cap.

Saints haven’t made a decision on activating Kendre Miller just yet

Dennis Allen says the Saints haven’t made a decision on activating Kendre Miller just yet, but the second-year running back has ‘made significant progress’

Dennis Allen says the New Orleans Saints haven’t made a decision on activating Kendre Miller from injured reserve just yet. The second-year running back has been sidelined since July 24 with a hamstring injury that cost him all of training camp, three preseason games, and at least the first four regular season matchups. He hasn’t practiced in 70 days.

And it sounds like he’s going to wait a little longer. It had been previously reported that the Saints expected Miller back after Week 4’s game with the Atlanta Falcons, but Allen tempered those expectations. Miller is eligible to return from injured reserve, but he may not be ready just yet.

“He’s made significant progress. I think that’s something that we’re considering,” Allen told WWL Radio this week. “We haven’t made a final decision on that.”

Players sometimes play as soon as they return to practice, but generally they take some time knocking off the rust. NFL rules give them a 21-day window in which to practice and prove they’re ready to go. So even if the Saints designate Miller to return on Thursday, there’s no guarantee he’ll play against the Kansas City Chiefs next Monday.

“I think that three-week window for him is going to be an important timeframe,” Allen added.

That’s disappointing. Hamstring injuries don’t normally take this long to recover from, but everyone is different, and so is every injury. Maybe Miller is dealing with something else. Maybe Allen is trying to motivate him. We’ll watch for updates.

Report: Chiefs GM Brett Veach was not happy about Skyy Moore’s drop vs. Chargers

According to a report from Harold Kuntz of FOX 4 in Kansas City, Chiefs GM Brett Veach was not happy about Skyy Moore’s latest drop.

The Kansas City Chiefs will be without star wide receiver Rashee Rice after a knee injury forced him out of the defending Super Bowl champions’ Week 4 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers.

While Rice is sidelined, the Chiefs will have to rely on veterans Justin Watson, Mecole Hardman, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Skyy Moore, and rookie Xavier Worthy to pick up the slack in the passing game.

Though each of these receivers is expected to have a larger role in Kansas City’s offense with Rice out of action, Moore may have a hard time getting on the field after a poor performance this weekend.

According to a report from FOX 4 sports anchor Harold Kuntz, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach was less than thrilled with Moore after he dropped a pass from Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City’s latest victory.

Check out Kuntz’s report below, which was posted to Twitter by Chiefs Wire legend Robert Rimpson:

Moore is in his third season in Kansas City and has failed to make an impact on the Chiefs’ 2024 campaign.

Through four games, Moore has yet to register a single catch.

Khalen Saunders active for his first Saints game since injury

Khalen Saunders is active for his first Saints game since suffering a preseason calf injury. And don’t forget he’s wearing a new number in 2024:

Khalen Saunders is active for his first New Orleans Saints game since suffering a preseason calf injury, having replaced John Ridgeway III in the rotation at defensive tackle for Sunday’s game with the Atlanta Falcons. And don’t forget he’s wearing a new number in 2024 after giving No. 99 to Chase Young; “Bink” has switched to No. 50 instead.

He was a big part of Dennis Allen’s defense last season. Saunders played 523 snaps across 17 games, totaling a career-high 57 tackles (24 solo). He also got some looks on offense as a blocking fullback and decoy in the backfield. There aren’t too many guys at his size (6-foot, 324 pounds) who can do that, but Saunders is more nimble than you might expect.

We’ll see what he has in store for Sunday. The Saints have given the lion’s share of reps to Bryan Bresee and Nathan Shepherd at defensive tackle, though rookie draft pick Khristian Boyd has had an active presence. We’ve also seen Cameron Jordan and Payton Turner move inside for obvious passing situations. Here’s hoping Saunders makes the most of his chances.

Rookie guard Kyle Hergel to make his Saints regular season debut vs. Falcons

Offensive line injuries have forced the Saints to tap into the depth on their practice squad. Rookie guard Kyle Hergel is set to make his NFL debut:

Sunday’s game with the Atlanta Falcons will mark the regular season debut for Kyle Hergel. Offensive line injuries have forced the New Orleans Saints to tap into the depth on their practice squad — starting center Erik McCoy and right guard Cesar Ruiz are both unavailable, so the team chose Hergel as their lone elevation from the practice squad for Week 4.

While he was the primary backup for Ruiz at right guard throughout training camp, the Saints may choose to bring Hergel in off the bench with a veteran like Landon Young starting instead.

He’s taken a unique path to the NFL. Hergel is Canadian, and he made a couple of different stops in college football before turning pro out of Boston College. That experience proved invaluable in preparing him for the next level, and even if he didn’t make the 53-man roster it’s clear the Saints have a role in mind for him. Let’s see if he can seize this opportunity, however it manifests.

Report: Saints expect both Alvin Kamara, Chris Olave to play vs. Falcons

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports the Saints expect both Alvin Kamara (hip/ribs) and Chris Olave (hamstring) to play against the Falcons:

It’s been a rough week for New Orleans Saints injury news. The offensive line is dealing with a host of issues and absences, but several star talents at the skills positions have gotten nicked up, too. Running back Alvin  Kamara was limited in practice this week with hip and  rib problems. Wide receiver Chris Olave pulled up with a hamstring during Friday’s final practice session. They were each listed as questionable for Week 4’s road game with the Atlanta Falcons, but both of them expected to play, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

That’s big news for the New Orleans offense. Kamara accounts for 285 of the team’s 459 rushing yards this season (62.1%). Olave is tied for the team lead with 14 targets through three weeks and Kamara is just behind with 11. They are vital pieces to Klint Kubiak’s unit.

We’ll see what they can manage against a Falcons defense that has held each of its last three opponents to 22 or fewer points and 365 or fewer yards of offense. Hopefully they can play through these injuries and help the team overcome some adversity in a divisional grudge match.

Report: Kendre Miller to return from injured reserve after Falcons game

Kendre Miller suffered an injury on the first day of Saints training camp. He’s expected to return to practice for the first time this week:

New Orleans Saints running back Kendre Miller is expected to return from injured reserve after Week 4’s game with the Atlanta Falcons, per NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill. That’s the earliest Miller can return to practice according to the NFL’s injured reserve rules, so the soonest he can play is Week 5’s prime-time game with the Kansas City Chiefs.

It’s been a rough offseason for Miller. He suffered a hamstring injury on the first day of Saints training camp and was never able to return to practice. Head coach Dennis Allen was clearly frustrated with his absence. He called the young running back out on a couple different occasions.

That could provide additional motivation for Miller as he attempts to come back to practice. Miller has flashed potential at times but he’s never been able to get truly rolling due to injuries through his young NFL career.

This latest injury may have dropped him in the rotation behind Jordan Mims, and further behind Jamaal Williams. All three of them are competing for snaps behind Alvin Kamara.

However, Mims hasn’t carried the ball much and Williams has left something to be desired. As Miller works his way back, there could be room for him to get a few carries during next week’s Chiefs game. He has to show he’s more than potential, because his injuries have made it to where potential isn’t enough.

Saints rule out Demario Davis, Cesar Ruiz on final injury report vs. Falcons

The final Week 4 injury report has the Saints ruling out a couple of starters against the Falcons, with Alvin Kamara and Chris Olave both questionable:

There’s a long list of absences and situations to watch on the final Week 4 injury report. The New Orleans Saints ruled out a couple of starters including linebacker Demario Davis (hamstring) and right guard Cesar Ruiz (knee), having already placed center Erik McCoy (groin) on injured reserve. Backup wide receiver A.T. Perry (hamstring)has also been ruled out.

Several others are questionable —  most prominently running back Alvin  Kamara (hip/ribs), but also veteran wideout Cedrick Wilson Jr. (ankle). On top of all of that, wide receiver Chris Olave (hamstring) suffered an injury during Friday’s practice session, so he’s questionable to play, too.

It’s not like Atlanta is in much better shape. The Falcons already ruled out starting right tackle Kaleb McGary and they’ll be playing Storm Norton in his place; Norton is a former member of the Saints practice squad. Like New Orleans, they’re also down their starting center, with Drew Dalman having gone on injured reserve earlier this week.

Here’s the full injury report from each team:
