REPORT: Chiefs trading for veteran WR DeAndre Hopkins

According to a report from Ian Rapoport, the Kansas City #Chiefs are trading with the Tennessee #Titans for veteran WR DeAndre Hopkins.

According to a report by NFL insider Ian Rapoport on Wednesday morning, the Kansas City Chiefs are trading with the Tennessee Titans for veteran wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins.

With the loss of wide receivers Rashee Rice and Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown this season, the Chiefs have been in search of a replacement and it appears help is on the way.

Hopkins, a former first-round pick in 2013, is widely regarded as one of the most dynamic and reliable receivers in the NFL, even if he may have lost a bit of his explosive edge over the years.

Having spent time with the Houston Texans, Arizona Cardinals, and Titans, the veteran will bring much-needed experience to Kansas City’s young receiving corps.

It is still unknown if the former Clemson star will see the field this Sunday when the Chiefs face the Las Vegas Raiders, but expect the talented receiver have a significant impact this season as Kansas City chases its third-straight Super Bowl victory.

Breaking: Saints, Alvin Kamara agree on a two-year extension

Breaking: Saints, Alvin Kamara agree on a two-year extension

This is big: NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports that Alvin Kamara and the New Orleans Saints have agreed to terms on a two-year extension valued at $24.5 million that puts him under contract through 2026. The deal puts Kamara in position to retire with the team that drafted him out of Tennessee back in 2017, and it puts him on track to continue chasing that spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame he so badly covets.

Garafolo adds that Kamara’s new deal replaces the $25 million in non-guaranteed money he was due in 2025. Instead, he receives $22 million in guarantees with an extra year tacked on. NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill confirmed the news, observing that Kamara’s reported average annual value clocks in at about $12.25 million per year, just beneath the $12.5 million Saquon Barkley is earning from the Philadelphia Eagles,

Kamara has already won a host of awards and records in his storied NFL career. The five-time Pro Bowl running back tied a league record for the most touchdowns scored in a single game (6), and he’s also tied with the great Marshall Faulk for the most successful two-point conversions in league history (7). The 2017 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year already owns Saints franchise records for touchdowns scored (85 and counting) and rushing touchdowns (60, with more to come), and he’s closing in quickly on the career rushing yards record set by his close friend Mark Ingram II (he’s 234 yards away). If he can go the distance, it’ll be tough to keep him out of Canton when it’s all said and done.

Report: Chiefs DB to undergo surgery after sustaining serious injury vs. 49ers

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, #Chiefs DB Jaylen Watson is set to go under the knife after his injury against the #49ers in Week 7.

According to a report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Jaylen Watson is set to go under the knife after sustaining a serious injury against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 7.

Watson was removed from the game during the fourth quarter with an apparent leg injury, and his status was quickly downgraded to out.

Though the Chiefs haven’t given an official update on the third-year defender, Fowler’s report seems to indicate that he will miss extended time, and may be a candidate to be placed on Kansas City’s injured reserve list.

Take a look at Fowler’s report below, which was posted to Twitter on Tuesday morning:

If Watson’s injury proves to be season-ending, it would be a major blow to the Chiefs and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who will have to rely on less experienced replacements when Kansas City faces the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 8.

Saints Pro Bowl center recovering on schedule after injury

Erik McCoy remains on schedule in his recovery from groin surgery, and the New Orleans Saints may have a target date for his return:

The expectation is New Orleans Saints Pro Bowl center Erik McCoy will be back from injured reserve no later than Week 13 versus the Los Angeles Rams and possibly earlier, per NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill. This is right on schedule for what was predicted.

The Saints offense entered an immediate spiral when McCoy went down with a groin injury against the Philadelphia Eagles. That game was a disaster for the offensive line, and it never got better. Injuries to Lucas Patrick and Cesar Ruiz only made matters worse.

New Orleans may be targeting a Week 12 return because they have a bye week prior to facing the Rams. It would essentially give McCoy two weeks of time to ramp up for the game.

That would be 10 weeks after the initial injury against the Eagles, but it would be only 8 games missed when factoring in the bye week. McCoy’s initial recovery time was 6 to 8 weeks. The bye week gives him extra cushion, but it would be right on schedule with earlier expectations.

It’s important to note McCoy remaining on schedule is a good sign he hasn’t suffered any setbacks.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling picked the Saints over a surprise playoffs contender

Catching passes from Jayden Daniels on the NFC East-leading Commanders would have been fun, but Marquez Valdes-Scantling may have more opportunities in New Orleans:

Catching passes from Jayden Daniels on the NFC East-leading Washington Commanders would have been fun, but Marquez Valdes-Scantling may have more opportunities to make a play with the New Orleans Saints. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that Valdes-Scantling fielded interest from the Commanders and Indianapolis Colts, among other teams, but the veteran wide receiver picked the black and gold.

It’s easy to see why. Players want to play, and opportunities abound in New Orleans. Injuries have hit the Saints hard at wide receiver. Chris Olave is still working his way back through the NFL concussion protocol, and Rashid Shaheed is out for the season after knee surgery. Bub Means and Cedrick Wilson Jr. have each been listed on the injury report with ailments of their own. It shouldn’t take Valdes-Scantling long to climb the depth chart.

That’s certainly more appealing than competing with established weapons like Terry McLaurin, Zach Ertz, Michael Pittman Jr., and Josh Downs for targets. Valdes-Scantling would’ve spent more time on the sideline in Washington or Indianapolis than he will in New Orleans. Young quarterbacks like Daniels and Anthony Richardson certainly have their appeal but what matters most is how often you’re in the game.

At the same time, it may have come down to money. We don’t know the terms of his contract, but if the Saints were the only team offering Valdes-Scantling a spot on their 53-man roster while other teams wanted him to start out on their practice squad, the difference is clear. Even a minimum salary of $1,125,000 for the season and about $66,176 each week outweighs the max he could hope for on a practice squad (up to $21,300 each week). NFL careers are short, and Valdes-Scantling owes it to himself to consider all factors when making a decision like this.

So now he’s in New Orleans. Fowler adds that Valdes-Scantling has already passed his physical and is getting to work on the playbook. The Saints have a game coming up quickly with the Los Angeles Chargers this Sunday, and it would be great to see him in the mix right away.

Saints rule out two more starters with injuries vs. Broncos

The Saints ruled out two more starters with injuries against the Broncos, including top cornerback Marshon Lattimore:

Disaster struck the New Orleans Saints on Thursday night when the Denver  Broncos came to town, and their old head coach Sean Payton left no doubt who needed who after his offense climbed up to a 26-3 lead. But that’s not all. The injury bug came back with a vengeance.

First, starting cornerback Paulson Adebo left the field on a trainer’s cart with a vacuum splint immobilizing his right leg. He was quickly ruled out with a knee injury and taken by ambulance to a nearby medical center after having  X-rays taken at the Caesars Superdome.

But two more starters went down in the second half. Left guard Nick Saldiveri, who was filling in for Lucas Patrick, was ruled out with a shoulder injury and replaced by rookie backup Kyle Hergel. Saldiveri didn’t join the team on the sideline after halftime.

After that, the other starting corner, Marshon Lattimore, exited with a hamstring injury. He was examined on the sideline in the blue medical tent but returned to the bench without a helmet, and was also ruled out. First-year draft pick Kool-Aid McKinstry  had gone in to replace Adebo and he was joined by undrafted rookie Rico Payton in  Lattimore’s place.

This team can’t take many more injuries. Only 20 of the 53 players on the active roster have not been listed on the injury report this season. Whatever injury prevention methods the training staff has been trying are not working.

Veteran defensive tackle will be a game-time decision

Khalen Saunders is dealing with a back injury, and the Saints are hoping to reach a decision on his status before kickoff with the Broncos:

The New Orleans Saints are dealing with a significant amount of injuries to critical players. Khalen Saunders may not be viewed in the same esteem as Taysom Hill, but he is an important piece of the Saints defensive line.

Saunders is currently dealing with a back injury that threatens his game status against the Denver Broncos. As for right now, Saunders is listed as questionable. Per NFL insider Josina Anderson, New Orleans is hoping to get an understanding if Saunders can play prior to getting to the stadium.

Nathan Shepherd and possibly Khristian Boyd will line up next to Bryan Bresee if Saunders is unable to play. Boyd has been inactive, but he would likely be activated to replace Saunders. Saunders is currently listed as questionable.

The defensive line has struggled most notably in the run game. Big leads in the beginning of the season took the run game out of play for teams, but that hasn’t been the case recently. With running the football still on the table, opponents have taken advantage of a weak New Orleans run defense.

The pass rush hasn’t been great either. Khalen Saunders isn’t the biggest name, but the Saints aren’t at a place where they can afford losing bodies at defensive tackle.

Reports: Saints showing interest in embattled Jets wide receiver

The Jets made Mike Williams expendable by trading for Davante Adams, and multiple reports say the Saints have inquired about trading for him:

The wide receiver trade market is moving rapidly in the NFL, and it appears Mike Williams may be the next domino to fall. That domino could fall in New Orleans. Per the Athletic’s Dianna Russini and Zack Rosenblatt, the New Orleans Saints, Los Angeles Chargers and Pittsburgh Steelers have all inquired about Williams.

Davante Adams joined Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets instead of Derek Carr in New Orleans. They are still interested in acquiring a receiver. After Rodgers blamed Williams for the game sealing interception in Week 6, Williams is likely on his way out of town.

Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed have gone down with injuries, and the Saints were looking for receivers prior to their injuries. The urgency has likely risen.

Olave has a concussion that hopefully doesn’t linger past this week. Shaheed will miss at least some time with a meniscus injury.

Williams would give the Saints a field-stretcher to replace Shaheed in the offense, and a bigger target at 6-foot-4 and 218 pounds. He’s only on a one-year contract, so there’s no ties or impact on the salary cap beyond this season.

Report: Giants’ Andrew Thomas could miss remainder of season

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, #Giants OL Andrew Thomas’ status is “up in the air” after he suffered a LisFranc injury in Week 6.

According to a report from NFL insider Ian Rapoport on Tuesday, New York Giants offensive lineman Andrew Thomas’ status is “up in the air” after he suffered what is feared to be a LisFranc injury in Week 6.

In a post to Twitter, Rapoport explained that Thomas was meeting with “noted foot expert Dr. Robert Anderson” in Charlotte and that the veteran lineman would likely have to miss the rest of the regular season if he requires surgery to fix the injury.

Third-year tackle Joshua Ezeudu currently sits behind Thomas on New York’s depth chart and is likely to get his first start of the 2024 regular season against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 7.

https://twitter.com/RapSheet/status/1846313215686238523

The Giants haven’t yet placed Thomas on their injured reserve list, so his official status remains a mystery.

Stay tuned to see if Thomas will need to miss extended time, or if New York avoided disaster with this latest setback.

Saints list a couple of upgrades on latest injury report vs. Broncos

The New Orleans Saints listed a couple of upgrades on the latest injury report vs. Broncos, but multiple key playmakers are still on the mend:

Tuesday’s updated New Orleans Saints injury report doesn’t look much different from what the team listed on Monday, but there are a couple of positives we should note as the team prepares for their Thursday night kickoff with the Denver Broncos.

Starting defensive end Carl Granderson (neck) was upgraded to full  participation from limited reps on Monday (had the team practiced; remember, they only held a walkthrough since it’s a short week). On top of that, veteran guard/center Lucas Patrick (chest) was able to practiced on a limited basis after the training staff estimated he would’ve sat out earlier  in the week.

But beyond that, it’s more of the same. Key playmakers like Chris Olave (concussion) and Rashid Shaheed (knee) remain sidelined, as does starting right guard Cesar Ruiz (knee). Cornerstones like Alvin Kamara (hand) and  Taysom Hill (rib) handled limited workloads while receiving treatment. There are 17 total players listed on the injury report, which is almost a third of the 53-man roster. That’s a serious challenge to overcome.

We’ll see how everyone is progressing when the final injury report is released on Wednesday. Here’s everything we learned from Tuesday’s update:
