Alabama slides up to No. 1 and Notre Dame climbs to No. 2 in the latest USA TODAY Sports NCAA Re-Rank 1-127.

After spending the past few weeks threatening Clemson’s hold on No. 1, Alabama claims the top spot after the Tigers’ 47-40 double-overtime loss at Notre Dame.

That win gives the Irish a stronger case for No. 2 than Ohio State, which stays in third after breezing past Rutgers. While OSU has been undeniably impressive, the Irish have played four more games overall than the Buckeyes and three more against Power Five competition.

And no OSU win can come close to Notre Dame’s win against Clemson, which hadn’t lost in the regular season since 2017. Since the narrow loss came on the road and with several key players unavailable, the Tigers only fall to No. 4.

The 1-127 has a harder time with the Florida and Texas A&M conundrum. The Gators just beat Georgia. The Aggies were off. Both have one loss, with Florida’s coming by a field goal to A&M. While beating the Bulldogs would normally lead to a big jump in the rankings, Florida only moves up two spots to No. 7 and remains just behind No. 6 A&M.

This week’s 1-127 also found two preseason Big Ten contenders continuing to plummet down the rankings. Penn State is down 24 to No. 59 after falling to 0-3. And Michigan is down another 16 spots to No. 66 after losing to Indiana, which is up to No. 12.

USA TODAY Sports Re-rank: Texas jumps five spots after upset victory

With the major win over OSU, Texas jumped five spots to No. 30 in the USA TODAY Sports re-rank. Oklahoma State dropped nine spots to No. 15.

Tom Herman more or less kept his job for the rest of the season when the Longhorns went up to Stillwater and beat No. 6 Oklahoma State. Heroic play from senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger saved Texas in the final drive of regulation and in overtime.

With the major win, the Longhorns jumped five spots to No. 30 in the USA TODAY Sports re-rank. Oklahoma State dropped nine spots but remains the highest-ranked team in the Big 12 at No. 15.

Here is how the rest of the conference looks:

  • No. 21 Iowa State
  • No. 22 Oklahoma
  • No. 26 Kansas State
  • No. 41 West Virginia
  • No. 54 TCU
  • No. 70 Texas Tech
  • No. 83 Baylor
  • No. 125 Kansas

Only one team jumped Texas in the re-rank in the Auburn Tigers. Gus Malzhan’s squad had a solid victory in the Plains against LSU on Saturday, winning 48-11.

Currently sitting with a 4-2 record and shooting up 10 spots, having Auburn as a near top 25 team is suspect. They do not have a victory against a team currently ranked inside the top 40 of the re-rank.

Even then, do not let their four victories against average teams fool you. The Tigers could easily be well below .500 after the SEC admitted Auburn had crucial calls in both the Arkansas and Ole Miss matchups go their way.

You can watch the two plays in question here:

It is safe to say Auburn has had a fairly lucky season. Maybe some things do not change in 2020.

Putting Auburn and Texas on a neutral site bowl game to end the season would favor the Longhorns. Poor offensive line play for the Tigers would struggle against Joseph Ossai and company, while a plethora of receivers could have a big day against a young Auburn secondary.

Florida sneaks back into top 10 of USA TODAY Sports’ weekly re-rank

Michigan falls way, way out of the Top 25 after losing to rival Michigan State and Clemson, Alabama and Ohio State remain at the head of the pack in the latest USA TODAY Sports NCAA Re-Rank 1-127.

Ranked eighth heading into the weekend, the Wolverines are down to No. 50 after losing 27-24 to the Spartans, who were coming off a loss to Rutgers.

Michigan was not the only team to fall down or completely out of the Top 25. Previously the best hope for the Big 12 in terms reaching the College Football Playoff, No. 15 Oklahoma State is down nine after losing to Texas. North Carolina falls to No. 24 after losing 44-41 to Virginia. And No. 26 Kansas State was docked 12 spots after getting blown out by West Virginia.

The Tigers, Crimson Tide and Buckeyes are the clear class of the Bowl Subdivision. While Clemson struggled with Boston College and Alabama made a case for leapfrogging to the top of the 1-127 by demolishing woeful Mississippi State, the Tigers stick at No. 1 leading into a crucial ACC matchup Saturday against No. 4 Notre Dame.

Notre Dame leads a slight shakeup after the top three. Georgia is down two spots to No. 6 after another struggle on offense in beating Kentucky 14-3. The Bulldogs were passed by the Irish and No. 5 Cincinnati, which beat Memphis 49-10.

Despite start of Big Ten play, Gators move up in USA TODAY’s re-rank

The Florida Gators football team was inactive for the second straight week but made up some ground in one of the latest looks at the ranks.

After losing to Indiana in overtime to open the Big Ten season, Penn State nearly falls out of the Top 25 in this week’s USA TODAY Sports NCAA Re-Rank 1-127.

The No. 25 Nittany Lions are down 19 spots and have fallen from second in the conference power rankings behind No. 3 Ohio State to fifth, trailing the Buckeyes, No. 8 Michigan, No. 13 Wisconsin and No. 24 Indiana.

The Hoosiers are up 38, the largest single-week leap in this week’s 1-127. Several Big Ten teams made similar jumps, including No. 44 Purdue (up 34) and No. 83 Rutgers (up 26). On the other end of the spectrum, No. 53 Iowa (down 29) and No. 107 Michigan (down 28) stumbled after starting 0-1.

While Ohio State opened as expected with an easy win against Nebraska, the Buckeyes are not able to leap ahead of No. 1 Clemson and No. 2 Alabama. After one week of Big Ten play, it seems obvious that OSU is set to join that pair as the unquestioned class of the Bowl Subdivision.

It was also a great week for the Group of Five. Seven teams from these conferences landed in the Top 25, led by No. 7 Cincinnati. Following the Bearcats are No. 15 Brigham Young, No. 18 Marshall, No. 19 Boise State, No. 20 Louisiana, No. 21 SMU and No. 22 Coastal Carolina.

Florida continues to fall in USA TODAY Sports’ latest re-rank

Despite sitting out on Saturday the Gators lost ground in USA TODAY Sports’ re-ranking, dropping one spot to No. 13 in the nation.

Clemson’s win against Georgia Tech was enough to keep the Tigers ahead of Alabama and atop the USA TODAY Sports NCAA Re-Rank 1-127.

Not that it was an easy decision. Clemson might’ve beat the Yellow Jackets 73-7, the largest margin of victory in any ACC game, but Alabama overcame a 24-17 deficit late in the first half to beat Georgia 41-24 and become the only unbeaten team in the SEC.

Each has a very good argument. Clemson is Clemson. Alabama is Alabama. That’s the argument. If you’ve been watching college football for the past five years, you’re not surprised at all that these two teams have created a distance between themselves and the rest of the Bowl Subdivision. If we’re lucky, the pair will rekindle the rivalry and meet in this year’s College Football Playoff.

Georgia didn’t fall far. The Bulldogs are down just one spot to No. 4, replaced by new No. 3 Ohio State, after playing well for about 29 minutes against the Crimson Tide. Overall, the Bulldogs’ defense seems capable of stopping any opponent in the SEC — just not Alabama.

SEC Week 4 Roundup: Alabama QB Mac Jones enters Heisman Trophy race, nightmarish day for Ole Miss

No. 5 Notre Dame had the opportunity to move into the top three but looked listless in a 12-7 win against Louisville. Ohio State and No. 6 Penn State will join the playoff chase this weekend with the start of Big Ten play.

Among the biggest movers forward this week are Coastal Carolina, Florida State and South Carolina after each posted wins against ranked opponents. Tennessee, Auburn and Mississippi State are among the group that had the biggest falls.

And the re-rank makes one last addition: Massachusetts joins the list after making its debut against Georgia Southern. The Minutemen lost 41-0 and slot in at No. 126, one spot from the bottom. Welcome to the season!

Gators News: October 19, 2020

Football was out of action but the soccer team lost a double-OT thriller to Vandy while the women’s golf team heads to their next tourney.

Welcome back from the weekend, one that felt a bit empty for Gators fans as their beloved football team had their game against the LSU Tigers postponed until Dec. 12. Even in the absence of gridiron competition, there are still a few stories to note as we start up another week.

While the Gators sat out, the show otherwise went on without them, resulting in a one-spot drop in USA TODAY Sports’ latest re-ranking. Among the biggest movers forward this week are Coastal Carolina, Florida State and South Carolina after each posted wins against ranked opponents.

Also at USA TODAY Sports, Paul Myerberg takes a look at college football’s winners and losers from Week 7. After a tough Saturday, the SEC has just four teams with fewer than two losses and a dwindling list of options for the national semifinals.

On Sunday, the soccer team hosted the Vanderbilt Commodores and lost a heartbreaker in double-overtime, 2-1. Florida took the lead early in the 41st minute in the first half and held it until Vandy scored in the 80th minute; the winning goal hit the net in the 103rd minute.

Today, the women’s golf team travels to West Point, Miss., to participate in The Ally at Old Waverly tournament, a three-day event that lasts until Wednesday. The squad will face the other 13 Southeastern Conference schools in the event.

Alabama stays at No. 2 and Georgia moves up to No. 3 in the USA TODAY Sports NCAA Re-Rank while several SEC teams experience steep drops in the 1-126.

No. 12 Florida is down seven after losing to No. 11 Texas A&M. No. 21 Tennessee is down 10 after being blown out in the second half by Georgia. Auburn is down seven to No. 23 after needing a late field goal to beat No. 44 Arkansas.

[lawrence-related id=25493,25491]

The biggest hits came to No. 54 Mississippi State, which is down 28 spots after losing to No. 52 Kentucky, and No. 58 LSU, which lost to No. 57 Missouri and sits at 1-2 with several difficult games ahead.

The Crimson Tide and Bulldogs have separated themselves from the rest of the pack in the SEC heading into Saturday night’s key matchup in Tuscaloosa.

But both teams are still chasing No. 1 Clemson, which secured another week atop the 1-126 after a 42-17 win against No. 19 Miami. The Tigers spotted the Hurricanes a touchdown on a blocked kick to end the first half and were in complete control throughout.

[lawrence-related id=25622,25620]

The top 10 includes one team from the Big 12 in No. 9 Oklahoma State and another Group of Five team in No. 8 Cincinnati.

Six teams inside the top 15 have yet to play a game: No. 4 Ohio State, No. 6 Penn State, No. 7 Oregon, No. 13 Michigan, No. 14 Southern California and No. 15 Wisconsin.

The Big Ten will begin play on Oct. 24, followed by the Pac-12 on Nov. 7.

Gators News: September 21, 2020

Another new week is here, this one with the promise of SEC football at its end as UF and the league launch their college football seasons.

[jwplayer vgn1sUXu-er0jUifI]

Another new week is here, this one with the promise of Southeastern Conference football at its end as the Florida Gators and the rest of the league launch their 2020 college football seasons.

At the top of the news, USA TODAY Sports has Central Florida among risers in its latest NCAA Re-Rank for teams1-90. There were no changes to the top eight.

Paul Myerberg takes a look at the winners and losers from Week 3 in college football, who are led by Central Florida and Clemson. No. 13 Central Florida’s 49-21 win at Georgia Tech cements the Knights’ status as the team to beat in the Group of Five and maintains the program’s underdog hopes of crashing the College Football Playoff.

Finally, Erick Smith talks about the lessons learned in Week 3 of college football action. For instance, much is made of the grit and resolve of players at the service academies as they try to match bigger programs. Sometimes that’s just media hyperbole. In this case, the win by the Midshipmen was all about resolve.

Florida Gators come in at No. 8 in USA TODAY re-rank

Florida has now dropped to No. 8 in the rankings after ranking No. 6 on the 76-team rankings.

With the Big Ten’s announcement on Wednesday that it will be returning this fall after initially deciding to postpone the fall season, USA TODAY Sports had to update its full rankings of the FBS teams competing this fall to reflect that.

With the inclusion of the Big Ten teams, the rankings go from 76 teams to 90 teams in total. Florida has now dropped to No. 8 in the rankings after ranking No. 6 on the 76-team rankings. No. 2 Ohio State and No. 6 Penn State, who rank above the Gators, were not previously included on the poll.

The Gators are still the third-highest ranked team in the SEC, however, behind No. 3 Alabama and No. 4 Georgia. Now that Big Ten teams appear in the poll, only one other SEC school, No. 9 Texas A&M, appears in the top 10.

No. 12 LSU, No. 18 Auburn and No. 23 Tennessee are the only other league teams in the top 25.

It’s still unclear how the Big Ten’s return on Oct. 24 will impact the college football landscape, but presumably, it will attempt to complete its season in time to be considered for the College Football Playoff.

Here are the full rankings.
