Lions vs. Vikings: Best and worst PFF grades from Week 5

Detroit Lions best and worst players through PFF shows the highlights and struggles against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 5

Another kick to the heart for the Detroit Lions after the Minnesota Vikings stole the victory right out of the Lions’ grasp with a last-minute field goal to drop the Lions record to 0-5 to start the season.

On top of another loss, the Lions lose yet another player, WR Quintez Cephus, to a potentially season-ending injury, making everyone wonder how the Lions can have this much bad luck. But you can tell the players are fighting to the last second and giving their all, making these losses so tough it brings Dan Campbell to tears.

It will only be a matter of time before the Lions get their first victory, and many of these players will be out to help achieve that win.

Here are this week’s PFF’s best and worst players for the Lions in Week 5.

Quintez Cephus thanks fans for the support after his injury

Cephus posted a grateful message on his Instagram page

The Detroit Lions will be without starting wide receiver Quintez Cephus for a few weeks. Cephus broke his collarbone after picking up a big first down in the first half of Sunday’s loss in Minnesota.

The wideout took to his Instagram page to thank fans for the outpouring of well-wishes and positive messages.

Cephus posted with the following comment,

“Thank you everyone who has reached out and wished me well. I wish I could be out on the field competing with my guys. Through hard work and my faith, I’ll be back stronger and better! đź’™ One Pride.”

Cephus is expected to miss at least four to six weeks with the injury.

Former Wisconsin WR Quintez Cephus suffers broken collarbone in loss to Minnesota

Former Wisconsin wide receiver and current Detroit Lion was in the midst of a breakout sophomore campaign in the NFL.

Through five games he totaled 15 catches, 204 yards and 2 touchdowns—numbers that were best on the team at the wide receiver position. The former fifth-round pick had already produced his share of highlight plays and was quickly emerging as one of the league’s real contributors at wide receiver.

The former Badger star unfortunately hit a bit of a roadblock Sunday, though, as he suffered a broken collarbone in the Lions loss to the Vikings and may now miss the remainder of the season.

Quintez Cephus headed to IR with a broken shoulder

WR Quintez Cephus headed to IR with a broken shoulder suffered in Week 5

The injury bug continues to attack the Detroit Lions. In Week 5, it bit starting wide receiver Quintez Cephus.

Cephus is headed to the injured reserve list with a broken collarbone suffered in Sunday’s 19-17 loss in Minnesota against the Vikings. He was injured on his third catch of the first half, landing awkwardly on the sideline and staying down. He was taken to the training room via a cart.

A broken collarbone typically carries a 6-week recovery if no surgery is needed, and can take up to four months if surgery is required. It is unknown yet if Cephus will need corrective surgery.

The second-year wideout has emerged as one of the Lions’ top offensive threats. Veteran Tyrell Williams remains on IR with a concussion suffered in Week 1.

Quintez Cephus leaves the Lions game vs. Vikings with shoulder injury

Cephus is questionable to return with a shoulder injury

Detroit Lions wide receiver Quintez Cephus headed to the locker room early before halftime. Cephus was in obvious distress after being tackled on the sideline on the Lions final drive of the first half.

Cephus injured his shoulder on the play, a great third-down catch-and-run where he juked veteran CB Patrick Peterson with a great move before getting bowled over at the sideline. After remaining down on the Lions sideline, Cephus was walked to the training room.

The team officially ruled Cephus’ return as questionable with the shoulder injury. He had three receptions on as many targets for 38 yards in the first half, all of which led the Lions.

Lions PFF grades: Best and worst players against the Bears from Week 4

The Detroit Lions PFF grades reflect the continued struggles in the secondary and average showing from the offense against the Chicago Bears

The Detroit Lions seemed to be on the up and up competing against the top-tier teams this season. Heading into Week 4, you had to believe they were feeling good against the Chicago Bears team that gave up nine sacks the previous week. The only kicker was they competing against the Bears and themselves, turning to be their downfall.

With poor execution, sub-par defensive play, and the constant shot footing, the Lions could not get anything figured out until it was too late. Also, to add injury to insult, the Lions lost their best defensive player, Romeo Okwara, for the season, making a poor defense much weaker in the long run.

There weren’t too many stellar players this week, and it reflected in this week’s PFF grades for the Lions.

Lions best players didn’t play well in loss to Bears

It was not a good game for a lot of the top talents on the Lions

The 2021 Detroit Lions are not a talented roster relative to much of the rest of the NFL. It was an expected development for a team starting over after a disastrous series of choices from the prior regime that left the cupboard bare in way too many spots to fill in one offseason. For these Lions to win, they need their best players to perform at their best.

That did not happen in the Week 4 loss to the Chicago Bears. None of the top talents on the team played like it, and it spoiled any chance for Dan Campbell’s team to pull out its first victory.

Starting with the offense, it was a rough day for the top Lions. Center Frank Ragnow, arguably the best center in the NFL, fired off a snap too early that resulted in a red zone turnover. He also left injured on the play and did not return.

Running back D’Andre Swift had a terrible performance running the ball. The slippery, strong runner we’ve come to expect in No. 32 was nowhere to be found in Soldier Field. Swift had poor vision and went down on contact he normally runs through on his way to just 16 yards on eight carries. Tight end T.J. Hockenson managed just four catches on eight targets for 42 yards. The Bears focused on taking him away. Hockenson didn’t play poorly but the Lions needed more from their top offensive weapon.

Quarterback Jared Goff was no small part of the problem for Hockenson. It’s hard to consider Goff one of the top talents on the offense after his uninspiring play the last two weeks, but unfortunately, he plays the most important position. He certainly didn’t play like someone who doesn’t need to be replaced in Chicago. Goff didn’t get much help from first-round rookie Penei Sewell, either. The big left tackle struggled through his worst game of the season against a talented Bears defensive front.

On defense, the Lions were already thin on impact talents before Romeo Okwara left the game early with an apparent Achilles injury. Veterans Michael Brockers, Nick Williams and Alex Anzalone, players the precocious defense needs to set the tone and step up, were largely invisible in Chicago.

There were some more lightly regarded players who excelled. Kalif Raymond and Quintez Cephus both played great games at wide receiver. Ragnow’s replacement at center, Evan Brown, was the team’s most reliable lineman in the second half. Rookie nose tackle Alim McNeill started slow but then really stepped up. Outside LB Austin Bryant had some positive moments in place of Romeo Okwara and injured Trey Flowers, who did not play. But the “stars” did not shine.

It’s hard enough for a lesser-talented team to win in the NFL. When the top players don’t excel, it’s darn near impossible. The Lions learned that the hard way in Week 4 in Chicago.

Lions vs Bears: Studs and Duds for Week 4

The Detroit Lions shot themselves in the foot to a 24-14 loss to the Chicago Bears, but with many duds, there are some studs this week.

The Detroit Lions walked into Soldier Field today in hopes of getting that elusive first win of the season against the Chicago Bears, but they will have to wait another week at a shot for that win. The Lions could not rebound from the number of mistakes made today dropping their fourth straight of the season with a 24-14 loss to the Bears.

Considering how the Lions and Bears played last week, many believed the Lions had a fair shot at pulling off the victory, but play after play on both sides of the ball it didn’t seem like they were in tune. Between the blown coverages and ill-timed turnovers, it dug the Lions a hole they couldn’t get themselves out today.

In a game where the Lions continuously shot themselves in the foot, it might be hard to walk away with anything the Lions can hang their hat out. Likely there were a few studs mixed in the number of duds this week.

How every former Badger in the NFL performed in Week 2

NFL Week 2 ended with a bang for Wisconsin Badger fans, as Quintez Cephus showed out on the national stage of Monday Night Football and nearly capped his performance off with a catch of the year nominee.

This picture below looks like it captures one of the greatest receptions in NFL history when taken out of context. Unfortunately, Packers cornerback Kevin King’s helmet was in perfect position to break up the pass.

Nevertheless, Cephus and many other former Badgers put forth impressive showings during NFL Week 2.

Stock up, stock down from the Lions Week 2 loss to the Packers

Which Lions players raised their values and which ones plummeted in Green Bay?

It’s hard to be bullish on the young Detroit Lions after the team dropped a 35-17 loss in Green Bay on Monday night. The team squandered a 17-14 halftime lead and fell to 0-2 on the season in the process.

Despite the negative outcome, not everything was negative. Some players showed promise for the future and raised their stocks. Others fluctuated in the other direction, with a couple of Lions venturing down into penny stock value for their negative performances.

Here’s the Lions stock report after Week 2.
