Colts make initial cuts, trim roster to 85 players

The Colts have made initial roster cuts, bringing the roster down to 85 players.

The Indianapolis Colts made several moves on Tuesday to get the roster down to 85 players as per league rules.

The team announced a few different moves. First, they waived tight end Graham Adomitis and running back Darius Anderson. Then, they placed defensive end Damontre Moore on the injured reserve list and waived-injured wide receiver Quartney Davis and cornerback Nick Nelson.

If Davis and Nelson clear waivers, they will revert back to the team’s injured reserve list.

The league is trimming down rosters a bit differently in 2021. Tuesday’s deadline brings the roster down to 85 players. Then, the Tuesday following the preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings, another five players will be cut, bringing the roster down to 80 players. The Tuesday following the final preseason game, the roster will be trimmed down to 53 players.

Vikings WR Quartney Davis listed as UDFA who could turn heads

Do you think Quartney Davis will be the Vikings’ third wide receiver?

Vikings first-round draft pick Justin Jefferson has taken up his share of headlines this offseason as the player who could potentially replace Stefon Diggs.

But there’s another rookie wide receiver on Minnesota who could also serve as an important player in 2020. That’s Quartney Davis, an undrafted free agent out of Texas A&M.

Bleacher Report recently compiled a list of the undrafted free agents who could turn heads in training camp, and Davis was the Vikings representative. Here’s what the outlet said about the rookie:

“The Minnesota Vikings are thin at wideout and added three corners in the draft; otherwise, defensive back Nevelle Clarke might’ve gotten the nod here. But even taking that out of the equation, Davis is a high-upside receiver who might catch some defenders off guard in camp.”

I like Davis’ skill set as a big-bodied wide receiver who can go up and get balls. I think he could be a nice complement to Adam Thielen and Justin Jefferson, two players who can still leap and make grabs, but can mostly thrive in the slot by utilizing quickness.

Ranking Vikings rookies in terms of importance

Here are some Vikings rookies ranked in order of their importance for the 2020 NFL season.

After the Vikings saw key contributors from past seasons leave the team, Minnesota underwent a retooling of its roster.

The Vikings replaced many of the veterans with rookies who will have to adjust to the NFL level without the benefit of a conventional offseason.

Vikings Wire went about ranking six rookies in terms of how important they are to the team’s success in 2020. This won’t be a list that just goes in order of draft position. However, the Vikings drafted positional needs early, so expect to see high picks high up on the list.

There are some interesting late-round rookies and undrafted free agents who might become big contributors for the Vikings, though.

Here is the Vikings rookie class, ranked in order of importance for next season:

Three undrafted free agents on the Vikings who could become contributors in 2020

Despite the obstacles in their way, these three undrafted free agents on the Vikings could still become contributors in 2020.

Minnesota, like all NFL teams, will need to cut its roster to 80 before August 18.

That cut can affect the fringe players on the team, who in a normal offseason would have had more time to compete for spots. Based on many of the cuts already, it seems like undrafted free agents will be hit pretty hard by this decision.

But there are bound to be some undrafted free agents who have the potential to not only make the team, but be big contributors in 2020, especially on the Vikings.

From wide receiver Adam Thielen to safety Anthony Harris to plenty of others, Minnesota is pretty good at finding talent in the rookie class after the draft is over.

Who are some of those Vikings players who can do that this year, despite the unprecedented obstacles in their way?

Here they are:

Report: Vikings guaranteed $473,300 in total to undrafted free agents

Minnesota splashed the cash in order to sign their 12 undrafted free agents.

Minnesota had 15 draft picks in this year’s draft, which was a record for a seven-round NFL draft.

The team’s picks led to them not having to fill out the roster with a lot undrafted free agents. So for the team’s 12 signees in undrafted free agency, the Vikings offered a lot of guaranteed money in order to retain them.

Sources with access to NFLPA salary data told the Star Tribune, the Vikings offered $473,300 to their undrafted free agents. The team also gave out $103,300 in signing bonuses and $370,000 in 2020 base salary guarantees.

Here are the Vikings undrafted signees this offseason, in order of most guaranteed money, per the Star Tribune.

Nevelle Clarke, CB, Central Florida: $115,000 ($15,000 signing bonus, $100,000 base salary guarantee)

Quartney Davis, WR, Texas A&M: $110,000 ($10,000 signing bonus, $100,000 base guarantee)

Dan Chisena, WR, Penn State: $60,000 ($10,000 signing bonus, $50,000 base guarantee)

Brady Aiello, T, Oregon: $45,000 ($10,000 signing bonus, $35,000 base guarantee)

Blake Lynch, LB, Baylor: $40,000 ($10,000 signing bonus, $30,000 base guarantee)

Jake Bargas, TE, North Carolina: $30,000 ($10,000 signing bonus, $20,000 base guarantee)

Myles Dorn, S, North Carolina: $30,000 ($10,000 signing bonus, $20,000 base guarantee)

David Moa, DT, Boise State: $30,000 ($10,000 signing bonus, $20,000 base guarantee)

Jake Lacina, C, Augustana: $6,300 ($6,300 signing bonus)

Nakia Griffin-Stewart, TE, Pittsburgh: $5,000 ($5,000 signing bonus)

Tyler Higby, G, Michigan State: $2,000 ($2,000 signing bonus)

Jordan Fehr, LB, Applachian State: $0

Vikings wideout Quartney Davis listed as one of the most exciting UDFAs

Are you excited to see Quartney Davis in purple and gold?

Quartney Davis, a wide receiver out of Texas A&M, didn’t hear his name called during the NFL Draft, but he still has a chance to earn a large volume of reps with the team he signed with.

Davis, an undrafted free agent, picked the Vikings over the Cowboys. Davis had originally agreed to terms with Dallas, but Minnesota increased its original offer to $100,000 guaranteed with a $10,000 signing bonus.

Bleacher Report thinks he’s the most exciting undrafted free agent on the Vikings. Here’s what the outlet said about the choice:

“NFL Media’s Lance Zierlein called Davis a ‘slot receiver with above-average size and adequate speed and separation quickness.’

With Thielen and Jefferson commanding attention on the perimeter, Davis should have opportunities to thrive in the middle of the field.”

Personally, I think Davis has a chance to win that wide receiver three position. If that were the case, the Vikings got great value after the draft.

Predicting the Vikings’ starters for the 2020 NFL season

Who will the Vikings start in 2020? See Vikings Wire’s predictions with brief analysis!

Minnesota has had its share of offseason turnover, but the team has attempted to reload through the draft and free agency.

The Vikings drafted Justin Jefferson, who can come in and replace some of Stefon Diggs’ production. Diggs was traded to the Bills for draft picks.

The team also saw a mass exodus in the secondary, most notably two starting cornerbacks and a nickel corner.

There are some reasons I picked more than 22 starting positions for this piece, despite there only being 11 starters on each side of the ball.

The first is because of the nickel package that the Vikings so often employ. The nickel corner is important so I predicted who that will be. The next is that the Vikings can play three wide receivers, so I guessed who those three would be.

Who gets the starting spots? See below for all the predictions and analysis!

Offensive line:

Riley Reiff, Pat Elflein, Garrett Bradbury, Dru Samia, Brian O’Neill

Analysis: Reiff keeps his spot on the offensive line, beating out Ezra Cleveland. Cleveland could possibly earn the starting position later on, but he might need time to adjust. Samia steps into the starting right guard spot to replace Josh Kline.

Vikings undrafted WR Quartney Davis is a big fan of Stefon Diggs’ game

As a junior at Texas A&M, Davis finished with 54 catches for 616 yards and four touchdowns.

It was a surprise when Texas A&M wide receiver Quartney Davis ended up going undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The wide receiver-needy Vikings scooped Davis up as an undrafted free agent, and it would seem as if Davis has a big opportunity to make the team.

Davis will be wearing No. 14, the number that previously belonged to Stefon Diggs, who was traded to the Bills this offseason.

Davis is actually a big fan of Diggs and is excited to rock the number that gave Vikings’ fans the Minneapolis Miracle.

“My dad called me and told me that they were giving me 14,” Davis said Thursday on a video conference call. “I didn’t even know, so it was something, though, that was pretty cool. I really love Stefon Diggs. I love his game. I watch him all the time … So, to be able to wear his number for Minnesota is a great honor.”

As a junior at Texas A&M, Davis finished with 54 catches for 616 yards and four touchdowns.

Vikings wide receiver Quartney Davis has chip on his shoulder about not getting drafted

“It definitely gives me a little drive… Puts more chips on my shoulder,” Quartney Davis told Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press.

Texas A&M wide receiver Quartney Davis was projected by some to be a late-round draft pick, so what does the Vikings recent signing think of not getting picked?

“It definitely gives me a little drive… Puts more chips on my shoulder,” Davis told Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press.

Despite not getting drafted, Davis earned a pretty good deal with the Vikings. Minnesota gave Davis $100,000 guaranteed with a $10,000 signing bonus. He ended up picking the team over the Cowboys, despite playing high school and college football in Texas.

Davis also picked a good spot in Minnesota from a positional standpoint. Wide receiver Stefon Diggs left this offseason via trade, so Davis will be able to compete with wide receivers Bisi Johnson and Chad Beebe, and some rookies. He could very well seize the wide receiver three spot with good play leading into the regular season, or he could at least take a fourth-string role.

Texas A&M WR Quartney Davis picks Vikings over Cowboys after draft

Quartney Davis played football for Texas A&M and Langham Creek (Houston), but the wideout picked the Vikings over the Cowboys.

Wide receiver Quartney Davis went to Texas A&M and Langham Creek  High School (Houston) in his football career.

He had a chance to stay in the state of Texas as an undrafted free agent, but he ended up picking the Vikings over the Cowboys instead. As reported by the Houston Chronicle, Davis had agreed to terms with Dallas, but Minnesota increased its original offer to $100,000 guaranteed with a $10,000 signing bonus.

Davis told the Houston Chronicle that it is an exciting opportunity.

“I really love Minnesota,” Davis told the Houston Chronicle. “I watched a lot of their games. I’m excited to get there and start my journey and work my way up the depth chart.”

Davis had 616 receiving yards and four touchdowns for the Aggies in 2019. He’s another speedy slot receiver who is good at creating separation. I think he’ll be able to compete for the third wide receiver spot with Bisi Johnson and others.
