Troy Pride, Jr. Impresses His New Coaches Wife

Troy Pride, Jr. made quite the first impression on his new head coach…and his new head coaches wife. See what Panthers HC Matt Rhule said

Troy Pride, Jr. was a fantastic corner at Notre Dame the last couple of seasons.  He may not have finished with huge interception numbers but he wasn’t a guy that was really ever picked on by opposing quarterbacks, either.

Pride was drafted by new head coach of the Carolina Panthers, Matt Rhule over the weekend in the draft’s fourth round.  Pride had a video meeting with Rhule recently that left with Rhule not being the only person impressed in his household.

Pride is a big believer in himself, and after getting drafted shared the following:

“I’m a competitive peach…my will to win is higher than a lot of individuals. My competitive edge is always going to keep me with any athlete that I play against and any system I play in.”

Good luck to Pride in Carolina, a team that looks to be trying to revamp/load up on defense.

Panthers 2020 NFL draft class: Early grades for each pick

Given the situation, they will have to lean heavily on this rookie class, as Matt Rhule admitted yesterday. So, how did they do?

The Carolina Panthers made history in the 2020 NFL draft, becoming the first team in the common era to make all of their picks on defense. It’s not hard to see why. Last season, the team ranked second-to-last in points allowed per game and since then they have lost six starters.

Given the situation, they will have to lean heavily on this rookie class, as Matt Rhule admitted yesterday. So, how did they do?

Here are our early letter grades for the Panthers’ class of 2020.

No. 7: Auburn DT Derrick Brown

Derrick Brown
Marvin Gentry-USA TODAY Sports

Carolina needed help at defensive tackle, but taking one in the top 10 is not a good use of draft capital. Brown’s mediocre athletic testing makes it even harder to swallow. His combine performance ranked him in the 64th percentile among interior defensive linemen.

Unless Brown becomes the next Fletcher Cox or Aaron Donald, they might wind up regretting this one, especially because Isaiah Simmons was still available. The Cardinals knew better than to pass on a prospect like that and they didn’t hesitate to snap him up with the next pick. Apparently, the Panthers had Brown higher on their board, which raises questions about their evaluation process.

That said, Brown is a powerful and disruptive lineman who frequently drew double teams in college, which may have contained his pass rushing production. He’ll be great defending the run, so if he can develop more moves and becomes a legitimate threat to get to the quarterback, it will help justify this pick a lot.

Grade: C

Panthers get high marks for early picks in the 2020 NFL draft

Here is a quick review of grades they have gotten for their haul thus far from around the internet.

Instant draft grades always need to be taken with a grain of salt. It takes three years for some prospects to really find their groove in the NFL, so no one letter grade should be taken too seriously this early. That said, most analysts like what the Panthers have done so far in the 2020 NFL draft.

We will be posting our own grades for each pick once the draft is over. For now, we aren’t as high on the Derrick Brown pick as most, but this is still a strong draft class so far. In general, the defense-heavy theme is the right way to go. We particularly love the Jeremy Chinn selection. His athleticism and versatility is exactly what the defense needed, especially after passing on Isaiah Simmons at No. 7.

If history is any indication, Carolina should be on the clock around 8:45 p.m. ET this evening. However, the latest reporting suggests the Panthers are willing, even eager to trade down from the No. 7 spot. Teams who are looking to land one of this year’s top four offensive tackle prospects are the most likely candidates to move up.

In the event they trade down, we’re betting they target a wide receiver or a cornerback prospect in the teens.

TEAM NEEDS

Linebacker

The sudden retirement of All-Pro linebacker Luke Kuechly left a hole in the middle of the Panthers defense. Addressing that spot early on in the NFL Draft will be key for Carolina and new head coach Matt Rhule. It wouldn’t hurt for them to take more than one linebacker in this class. The top of the list is Isaiah Simmons who could play a hybrid linebacker-safety for the defense.

Cornerback

Top cornerback from the 2019 season James Bradberry left to the New York Giants through free agency leaving a hole for the defense. Ross Cockrell who was also a free agent from the 2019 season remains unsigned. The dream scenario would be Jeffrey Okudah sliding outside of the top five to allow Carolina to swoop in and snag the top cornerback of the class. CJ Henderson is also another viable option as he is seemingly gaining momentum as the NFL Draft approaches.

Safety

Probably a need that is likely addressed on day two of the NFL Draft, safety is also a concerning need for this team. The back seven could use some attention and with targets such as Ashtyn Davis, Antoine Winfield, Jr., Xavier McKinney or one of the small-school prospects. There are plenty to choose from. The team did sign Tre Boston to a three-year deal, but they could use depth and an eventual starter.

TOP TARGETS

Isaiah Simmons | LB | Clemson

Jeffrey Okudah | CB| Ohio State

Derrick Brown | DL | Auburn

Javon Kinlaw | DL | South Carolina

CJ Henderson | CB | Florida

2020 NFL Draft: Trade values for every pick this year

Here is a look at every pick in the current draft order, along with their trade values.

The Panthers picked up an extra fifth-round draft pick by trading backup quarterback Kyle Allen to Washington a couple weeks ago. Now, they’re going into the 2020 NFL draft armed with eight picks.

Here is a look at every pick in the current draft order, along with their trade values.

Trading down for more draft capital is always smart, but it’s particularly true this year for Carolina. The team has lost seven defensive starters already this offseason as well as their top two guards. If Isaiah Simmons or Jeff Okudah are no longer on the board at No. 7, dealing down in the first round will be a good place to start.
