Four-Star edge rusher Omari Abor set to announce commitment Sunday

The No. 4 edge rusher in the nation will announce his commitment at the All-American game on Sunday.

Four-star recruit, Omari Abor, The No. 4 edge rusher in the 2022 class according to 247 Sports composite ratings, is set to announce his college decision on Sunday at the All-American Bowl. As of now, Ohio State has a solid crystal ball prediction to land Abor’s services. The Texas native will be choosing between the Buckeyes, AlabamaLSUTexas, and Texas A&M.

Abor did say that he will continue to visit schools after he commits on Sunday. So even if OSU gets the nod, the Buckeye coaching staff will need to continue wooing the defensive end until pen meets paper.

Abor took an official visit to Ohio State in June and seemed to really enjoy his time on campus saying he liked the feel, talking with the coaches, and how they talked about more than just football, but about life too.

Abor would be the second defensive end to join the 2022 Ohio State recruiting class, joining Kenyatta Jackson who is ranked as the No. 7 edge rusher in the nation.   The Buckeye’s class currently sits at No. 4 according to 247Sports.

LOOK: Four-star DE Omari Abor sports Texas gloves for his state title game

Duncanville star spotted in Texas gear at the state championship game.

Texas target Omari Abor was spotted in Texas gloves flashing the “hook’em horns” ahead of Duncanville’s state championship game.

Abor is uncommitted and plans to sign during the February signing period. The Duncanville product has interest in Texas, Ohio State, LSU, Texas A&M and Alabama.

247Sports has Abor ranked as the No. 4 defensive end prospect in the nation and No. 9 overall player in the state of Texas. 247Sports recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks compared Abor to Denver Broncos star pass rusher, Bradley Chubb.

With only one official visit left, it will be important for Steve Sarkisian and Bo Davis to get Abor on campus before signing day.

Texas has already signed a very solid defensive line class, adding Abor to the mix with J’Modd Tapp, Justice Finkley among other signees would make up one of the best classes in the country.

Five recruits that can turn around Texas’ football program

Landing a few of these recruits could turn around the state of the program.

5-star DL hoping to visit Clemson

Clemson is keeping tabs on this five-star prospect in the 2022 class.

Duncanville (TX.) Omari Abor recently caught up with The Clemson Insider about what he’s been hearing from the program as his recruitment begins to dwindle. While Abor doesn’t hold an offer from the Tigers just yet and they were a late player to his recruitment, he still personally considers them a top-5 school.

“I’ve been hearing that they’re really interested in me,” Abor said. “We’ve been kind of choppin’ it up a bit about the program and certain players that went there, just different things like that.”

A couple of weeks ago, Todd Bates went down to Texas to see Abor. While Clemson’s defensive tackles coach/recruiting coordinator didn’t watch Abor play, he was there to watch Abor in pregame warmups.

He didn’t talk to Bates in person because he was warming up, but they both acknowledged each other’s presence.

How would Abor categorize his relationship with Bates?

“So far, it’s honestly pretty good,” Abor said. “It’s pretty good. We talk every week. He’s telling me a little bit about the program, how different players work in the defensive scheme.”

They have discussed an offer, but Clemson would like for Abor to take a visit beforehand. The only problem with that is Abor would have to fly up to Clemson, which doesn’t seem feasible at the moment.

“That’s the goal,” he said when asked about a potential visit to Clemson. “Hopefully, I can. Another thing, I’m not gonna say they’re late to the process, but I kind of already had plans already made on where I’m visiting.”

When it comes to his recruitment, Abor is taking his time. He’s not committing until the Under Armor All-American game anyways, which will be held on Jan. 2, 2022.

When it comes to a school at the next level, Abor is searching for one thing in particular.

“The truth,” Abor explained. “Just let me know the truth. If you think that I’m not gonna play defensive end in college, then just let me know. Don’t sugarcoat anything…just let me know what’s up.”

Abor indicated that it’s still up for debate whether he’ll play the edge or inside at the next level. While he’s comfortable doing whatever it takes to get on the field, Abor feels he’s better utilized coming off the edge.

His playstyle has changed a bit since last season. Abor weighed around 237-240 pounds during his junior year. At the beginning of his senior season, he weighed in at 268. Abor says that he really couldn’t move like he could the season before.

He’s lost some weight, which has helped him gain some of his speed back. Though, Abor feels more of a run-stopper now, as opposed to being a pass-rusher the season prior;

Abor ranks as the No. 2 edge rusher and No. 24 overall prospect nationally in the class of 2022, per the 247Sports Composite.

Texas Football Recruiting: Catching up with five-star edge Omari Abor

Longhorns Wire got to catch up with the five-star edge after Duncanville’s historic win over DeSoto on Friday night.

Nobody has done a better job recruiting on the defensive line throughout the 2022 cycle than the Texas Longhorns. Bo Davis and Pete Kwiatkowski have snagged commitments from across the country, spanning from Phoenix, Arizona, to Trussville, Alabama.

Even with seven defensive line commitments, one of the best pass rushers in the country is still on the board, Omari Abor.

I caught up with the five-star edge after Duncanville’s historic win over DeSoto on Friday night. He did not play due to a minor shoulder injury, but he was there to support his teammates.

Both Jeff Banks and Kyle Flood were in town, and Abor had brief conversation with them pregame. 247Sports has listed Banks as one of the main recruiters alongside defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski.

However, Director of High School Relations Chris Gilbert has been the main point of contact.

“That’s my guy,” Abor said. “He knows my dad from back in the day, and we just chop it up with each other. I got to know about him more. Talking to him made me open up my eyes to Texas.”

Abor has yet to take a visit to Austin since picking up his offer in March 2020. Only one official visit remains for the five-star: Texas and Texas A&M are battling for it.

Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma and Ohio State officially hosted him over the summer. With the Sooners cut from his top schools list, the in-state schools have the opportunity to climb back in the recruitment.

Joining the SEC has helped Texas get back into a lot of races. Abor is not one of those. Playing in the sport’s premier conference is far from the top priority.

“I’m not really caught up into the SEC but I am at the same time,” Abor said. “I would love to play in the SEC, but I feel like that’s not one of my biggest concerns about picking a school.”

One of Texas’ best pitches may be the early playing time. The transfer portal is supplying most of the pass rush this season from the edge. Once Ray Thornton and Ben Davis are out of the program, young guys will have opportunities to step up.

Abor has been monitoring the depth chart situation and each of his top five schools but tries to keep it out of mind. He thinks no matter where his final destination ends up being, he will get on the field.

“I kind of look at the depth chart but I kind of don’t at the same time,” the five-star said. “If you can play, you’ll play. You’re going to step on the field.”

Out of Alabama, LSU, Ohio State, Texas and Texas A&M, the Buckeyes have caught Abor’s eyes as the deepest at defensive end. But he reiterated depth does not faze him.

“The biggest depth chart I have seen is Ohio State, but it does not really bother me. I feel like I can really play anywhere.”

Abor confirmed he is still on track for a commitment at the Under Amour All-America game in January. Getting him on campus for an official visit instead of Texas A&M is critical for Texas if it wants to continue to chip away.

On the 247Sports composite, Abor is the No. 2 edge in the country and the No. 18 overall prospect. Within the state of Texas, he is the No. 6 player.

Thoughts and notes from Friday’s DeSoto-Duncanville matchup

Friday night was a historic one for Duncanville. Reginald Samples hit 300 career wins as a head coach in Texas High School Football

Friday night was a historic one for Duncanville. Reginald Samples hit 300 career wins as a head coach in Texas High School Football. According to Greg Tepper of Dave Campbell’s TF, he is the 13th coach in the state’s history to accomplish the feat.

Duncanville and its players celebrated accordingly on DeSoto’s home turf after the 42-31 win, giving Samples a few Gatorade ice showers before the final whistle. But the game was not the easiest of the 300 on the resume.

DeSoto began the game up 14-0 early in the first quarter. After a Devyn Bobby interception on the one-yard line, four-star 2023 prospect Johntay Cook took it to the house for 99 yards. A nice move from Cook and blown coverage for the Panthers left one of the best receivers in the state with acres of space.

On the next drive, Oregon commit and wide receiver Stephon Johnson Jr. made it 14-0 to give the Eagles the early lead. From there, it was all Duncanville, especially on the ground.

Three-star offensive tackle Cameron Williams anchored the right side, leaving plenty of holes for running backs Malachi Medlock and Caden Durham. The two combined for 280 yards and four touchdowns on 36 carries.

Non-offensive touchdowns played a role as well. Lamodrick Spencer took an interception to the house after a tipped ball from 2024 defensive end Collin Simmons (more on him later). Davion Bluitt took a punt return back just at the stroke of halftime as well.

Duncanville only managed 44 passing yards on 18 attempts. Getting the job done with a solid run game was the clear plan for Samples’ staff on Friday.

After being down by two touchdowns in the second quarter, Duncanville scored 35 unanswered at ease. The celebration was on for Coach Samples, with banners and a rivalry win to show for it.

Coaches in attendance

It was a star-studded night of coaches in attendance at Eagle Stadium. Beginning with Texas, offensive line coach Kyle Flood and tight ends/special teams coach Jeff Banks took in the first half. The latter is known as one of the ace recruiters on staff and spent time with both coaching staffs on the field before the game.

A conference foe in Gary Patterson was there as well.

Oregon offensive line coach Alex Maribal wins the award of furthest traveled, though. He was there to see two Duck commits in offensive tackle Cameron Williams and wide receiver Stephon Johnson Jr.

Other players of note

Collin Simmons – ’24 DE Duncanville

The defensive MVP for Duncanville was defensive end Collin Simmons. The sophomore was disrupting the DeSoto passing game all night, living in the backfield. He ended up with two fumble recoveries and even tipped a pass at the line of scrimmage resulting in a pick-six.

247Sports has already rated Simmons as the No. 8 player from the state of Texas in the 2024 class. Marshall, Michigan State, and SMU are the only three to reach out so far. At this point, the clock is ticking on this recruitment blowing up.

Five-star Omari Abor even said Simmons will definitely end up being better than him.

Devyn Bobby – ’22 S DeSoto (Baylor)

Duncanville tried the passing game early on and was shut down by Devyn Bobby. He finished with one interception and should have had another the following defensive drive. Bobby was all over the field at free safety, not letting any Panther receivers behind him. And if they did, he would find a way to make a play on the ball.

Baylor currently has a commitment from Bobby. Texas has not offered the three-star but he was in Austin over the summer. Certainly an option to look at pending other 2022 defensive back results.

Remaining notes

I was excited to see two pass rushers tonight in Abor and DeSoto’s 2024 pass rusher Caleb Mitchell.

Abor did not suit up at all, dealing with a shoulder injury. He seemed to be in good spirits, though, cheering on Duncanville’s defensive performance throughout.

As for Mitchell, I assume an injury kept the sophomore off the field. Seeing him go up against Williams or 2022 Florida State commit Jaylen Early would have been a treat.

Five-Star edge rusher Omari Abor keeps Ohio State in trimmed list

Ohio State has made the top five for the No. 2 edge rusher in the nation.

Five-star recruit, Omari Abor, The No. 18 player in the 2022 class and No. 2 edge rusher according to 247 Sports composite ratings has narrowed his list to five schools. Ohio State made the cut in April when the list was ten and is still in the running now that only five schools remain in consideration.

The Texas native kept the Buckeyes on the list with AlabamaLSUTexas, and Texas A&M. Those missing the cut were Arizona State, Georgia, Missouri, Oklahoma, and USC. Ironically, 247 Sports crystal ball predictions have had the Sooners as the leader in the clubhouse, but it appears OU’s chances have taken a serious hit.

Abor took an official visit to Ohio State in June and seemed to really enjoy his time on campus saying he liked the feel, talking with the coaches, and how they talked about more than just football, but about life too. It’s a reoccurring theme we hear from recruits.

As of now, Ohio State is still looking for the first defensive lineman to sign with the Buckeyes in the 2022 class. Abor would obviously be a great addition to an already strong class that is currently ranked third in the nation.

Alabama recruiting: Five-star Omari Abor is down to five

Can Alabama land five-star EDGE defender Omari Abor?

Alabama once again looks to be in a strong position to finish with the top recruiting class in the country.

Their chances of landing one of the top overall recruits also look to be promising as five-star EDGE defender Omari Abor released his top five schools earlier today and Alabama was included.

Hayes Fawcett of On3 Recruits tweeted the news earlier today.

The Duncanville, TX native’s top five schools include Alabama, Texas A&M, LSU, Texas, and Ohio State.

At this moment I like Alabama’s chances of landing Abor, but fighting off the in-state schools as well as Ohio State will not be easy.

Five-star edge Omari Abor includes Texas in top five schools

Omari Abor announced his top five schools, with Texas making the cut.

One of the more surprising elements late in the month of July was Texas’ ability to get back in the race for five-star edge Omari Abor. The five-star edge prospect seemed to be drifting away from the Longhorns but Steve Sarkisian found a way to get back in the race.

Abor announced his top five schools Friday afternoon, with Texas making the cut. Alabama, LSU, Ohio State, and Texas A&M are the other four schools still involved with the five-star edge prospect. After unofficially announcing his top six via Instagram a couple of weeks ago, Abor decided to cut out USC.

Oklahoma being left off the list is surprising after the momentum they carried going into the summer. Abor visited Norman during the ChampU BBQ event but has fallen off ever since official visits to Alabama and Ohio State. Three 247Sports crystal balls are still inserted for the Sooners.

LSU and the two Texas schools will battle it out for Abor’s final official visit. He went to Texas A&M twice during the summer but both were unofficial. To win the recruitment, Steve Sarkisian must get Abor back to Austin.

In an interview with On3, Abord discussed what he liked about Texas’ program.

“I started off with Texas first because all of their staff members and coaches are incredible,” Omari Abor said. “Especially, the strength and conditioning coach. Coach (Steve) Sarkisian was definitely a game-changer for Texas.”

On the 247Sports composite, Abor is the No. 18 overall prospect and the No. 2 edge in the country. Within the state of Texas, the Duncanville product is the No. 6 player. He will open his season on Friday night against California powerhouse Mater Dei.

Five-star edge defender Omari Abor announces his top schools

Good news for LSU on the recruiting front, the Tigers among final schools

Recruiting for the LSU Tigers has been stagnant since the decommitment of five-star safety Jacoby Mathews. While the team still remains among his top schools, it has been quiet for Ed Orgeron in the 2022 recruiting cycle. However, the team did receive good news as they were among the top schools for a top 2022 edge defender.

On Friday Omari Abor of Duncanville, Texas, listed his top schools for recruitment. Joining LSU is Alabama, Ohio State, Texas, and Texas A&M. The early favorite for his recruitment, Oklahoma, was left off his final five schools. The Tigers are no strangers to recruiting in the Lone Star State. Since the year 2000, they have signed 38 players from Texas. Only the state of Louisiana (130) has produced more Tigers.

Abor is the No. 2 Edge defender of the 2022 class according to the 247Sports composite rankings and No. 3 in the state of Texas. He would be a monster addition to the 2022 class that currently ranks as the No. 7 class in the country.

If Daronte Jones and Andre Carter can secure his commitment, he could likely be an impact player next season when Ali Gaye and possibly Andre Anthony are both gone from the program. Teaming him up with BJ Ojulari and Jarell Cherry in 2022.
