1 wild photo shows how much ground Olympic swimmer Léon Marchand made up to win gold

French swimmer Léon Marchand made up SO much ground to win another gold medal.

One of the biggest stars at the Paris Olympics so far has undoubtedly been French superstar swimmer Léon Marchand. On Wednesday, he once again showed the world why during an incredible finish to the men’s 200-meter butterfly final.

As Marchand made his final turn, he found himself nearly a full body length behind Hungary’s Kristóf Milák for first place. For the overwhelming majority of swimmers, such a gap with a minimal amount of time to work with likely would’ve meant a certain defeat.

Then Marchand turned on the jets in a finish where he surpassed Milák with astonishing closing speed. The angle in the photo below shows just how much ground Marchand made up in so little time:

Holy. Cow. What a legend. What a flex.

If I were in Marchand’s shoes, you wouldn’t be able to tell me anything. It’s almost as if he spotted everyone that distance just to show how dominant he can be in the water.

A’ja Wilson trolled her Team USA basketball teammates after beating them in UNO

“Loser. Loser. Loser. LOSERRRRRR!”

If I ever lost a game of UNO to A’ja Wilson, I would never speak to a soul again.

UNO is sacred, and you do not disrespect your ancestors — who have played hundreds of UNO games before you, practically running friendships and families — by losing. I don’t make the rules; it’s just understood. Apparently, Brittney Griner, Diana Taurasi, Chelsea Gray, and Kahleah Copper did not get that memo because they let A’ja win despite having TWENTY-FOUR cards in her hand.

WHAT ARE WE DOING?! What happened to the game I love? A’ja beat her Team USA teammates so handily that she posted it to Instagram for the world to see and trolled them, saying, “Loser. Loser. Loser. LOSERRRRRR!” The girls are down BAD. PULL IT TOGETHER.

FIBA Dillon Brooks? Rockets forward thriving again at 2024 Olympics

“I like to play for my country; it gives me a lot of passion to do so,” Dillon Brooks told BasketNews. “For the game itself, you have to be 40 minutes, attentive to detail.”

In 2023, Houston Rockets forward Dillon Brooks enjoyed a strong run as Canada secured its first FIBA World Cup medal. He punctuated that effort with an astonishing 39-point outburst on peak efficiency during a third-place game victory versus the United States.

Brooks was named Best Defensive Player at the tournament.

At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Brooks and his native Canada appear poised to make another deep tournament run. After a 2-0 start to the three-game group phase of Olympic play, Canada has already secured its spot in the eight-team, single elimination quarterfinals.

Brooks is a clear reason, with averages of 15.0 points and 4.0 rebounds in 24.4 minutes while shooting 50.0% from the field and over 70% on 3-pointers. His average plus/minus for each game, which represents Canada’s scoring margin with Brooks on the court, is +17.5.

“I like to play for my country; it gives me a lot of passion to do so,” Brooks told BasketNews. “For the game itself, you have to be 40 minutes attentive to detail. All those things add a lot more to a player.”

Canada finishes group-stage play versus Spain on Friday, with tipoff set for 10:15 a.m. Central (it can be streamed on Peacock). Until then, here is a look at Brooks’ 2024 Olympic highlights, in photos.

Nikola Jovic devastatingly botched what would’ve been Nikola Jokic’s historic Olympics triple-double

Nikola Jokic was unbelievably close to Olympics history.

After getting walloped by Team USA in its Paris Olympics opener, the Serbian men’s basketball team had a lot of work to do against Puerto Rico on Wednesday. With a 107-66 blowout victory, the Serbians, led by superstar Nikola Jokic, passed their test with flying colors, flipping their -26 point differential coming in to a solid +15 margin.

Jokic, in particular, and unsurprisingly, was in his bag.

The three-time NBA MVP with the Denver Nuggets dropped an effortless 14 points, 15 rebounds, and nine assists while missing just two shots. With no real challenge from the Puerto Rican front line, Jokic was in complete control, even throwing casual “touchdown passes” to teammates down the court without a second thought:

Ironically, the same person who caught this above pass — Miami Heat power forward Nikola Jovic — is also who cost Jokic a chance at all-time Olympics history in Serbia’s dominant win.

That’s because with the Serbians cruising, it had no incentive to play Jokic in the fourth quarter. They don’t want to tire him out in an easy win when there will likely be more competitive games in these Olympics in the near future. But before being benched for rest at the end of the third quarter, Jokic still found Jovic for an easy layup that would’ve given the center only the fourth triple-double in the history of the men’s Olympics.

And … Jovic smoked it, forcing Jokic to take the offensive rebound and score himself. Jokic would not reenter the game later, finishing with just nine assists while ending his chances of being etched into the lore of international basketball. Oof.

For reference, the three triple-doubles in men’s Olympics history came from:

  1. Sasha Belov for the Soviet Union against Canada during Montreal 1976
  2. LeBron James for the USA against Australia in London 2012
  3. Luka Doncic for Slovenia against France in Tokyo 2021

If there’s any consolation for Jokic, it that he probably doesn’t care he missed out on this individual feat. He wants Serbia to win first and foremost, to get a medal in these Olympics, because he’s a team guy first and foremost.

Here was teammate Bogdan Bogdanovic’s take on Jokic missing out, per FIBA:

“We heard that he’s on 9 assists, somebody shouted it from the stands,” Bogdanovic said. “But trust me, he doesn’t really care about this stuff.”

That’s all well and good, but it still would’ve been really cool for Jokic to etch his name into the record books for Serbia with an Olympics triple-double. That’s not a chance you get every day. This is only Jokic’s second-ever Olympics playing for his home country, after all.

At least the big man is likely to get a few more opportunities to do so in Paris.

USWNT midfielder Coffey suspended for Olympic quarterfinal

It’s potentially a major blow for the USWNT heading into the knockout phase

Emma Hayes took a risk by starting Sam Coffey against Australia on Wednesday. Early on, it became clear that it didn’t pay off.

Coffey will be suspended for the U.S. women’s national team’s Olympic quarterfinal with Japan on Saturday after she picked up a fourth-minute yellow card in her team’s 2-1 win over Australia.

USWNT coach Hayes made just one change — an injury-enforced swap of Emily Sonnett for Tierna Davidson — from the side that started each of the team’s first two Olympic matches.

The USWNT won both of those games, clinching advancement to the quarterfinal before Wednesday’s group-stage finale against Australia.

That meant Hayes could have rested some of her players — particularly Trinity Rodman and Coffey, who entered the match one yellow card away from a suspension.

Her decision to start Coffey was not made to look wise just four minutes in against the Matildas, as the midfielder was shown a yellow card after she stood on Katrina Gorry’s leg when going into a tackle.

Coffey was also yellow carded in Sunday’s 4-1 win over Germany. That meant the Portland Thorns star will be suspended for the team’s quarterfinal with two yellow cards in the group stage.

Her absence could be a potentially major blow for a USWNT side that has come to rely on her as the holding midfielder.

In Coffey’s place, Hayes could opt to start Korbin Albert as a like-for-like replacement. Sonnett could also be an option to move into a holding midfield spot if Davidson is recovered in time for the quarterfinal.

Simone Biles seemingly had a laugh about MyKayla Skinner blocking her on social media

Simone Biles is gleefully taking her revenge.

Note to self: Never get on Simone Biles’ bad side.

After Biles led Team USA to a gold medal in the women’s gymnastics all-around final at the Paris Olympics, making hilarious TikToks wasn’t the only way she gloated. A cryptic triumphant Instagram post from Biles appeared to call out former teammate McKayla Skinner for being critical of the American gymnasts’ work ethic in the past. Needless to say, partner-in-crime Suni Lee enjoyed Biles’ not-so-subtle call out.

Also, poor McKayla Maroney for being put in the crosshairs because of unfortunate spelling.

After the dust of all the online drama finally settled, Biles put the best possible bow on this situation: She seemingly laughed about Skinner finally blocking her on social media.

As the greatest American gymnast of all time, Biles has certainly earned the right to be this petty. Again, for the life of me, I could never understand even passively trying to alienate her.

Ilona Maher’s teary-eyed speech after winning a historic Olympic bronze medal is straight out of a movie

Not to be dramatic, but I would run through a brick wall for Ilona Maher.

Ilona Maher is having the time of her life at the Paris Olympics, and it’s seemingly because women’s rugby is finally getting the recognition it deserves.

After Maher hit a filthy stiff arm during this year’s games, word began to spread about Team USA’s women’s rugby sevens team. Their popularity even caught the eye of Jason Kelce, who was in France to watch the Olympics. Kelce eventually hooked up with Ilona and the team, promising to be a super fan, and the rest was history.

Maher took that momentum with her as Team USA battled Australia during an electric bronze medal game that ended in unbelievable walk-off fashion. The moment was so incredible that you couldn’t have scripted it if you tried. So, it’s only fitting that Ilona’s post-match speech about Team USA’s journey felt like it was straight out of a movie.

Here’s some of what she shared with tears in her eyes:

“In rugby, we say we’re just passing through the jersey and making the jersey better, and that’s always been my goal — to make this jersey better. Not just for me but for the other girls that are gonna come into the program.”

“And I want them to dream of being professional athletes. That’s what I feel like I’m giving them. Even if this is my last rugby game, I hope that there’s space for them to grow and thrive and that they experience this [because] I got to.”

You made that jersey better, @ilonamaher 🥹🫶 If you missed it, the U.S. women’s rugby team had a stunning finish over Australia at the #ParisOlympics – nabbing their first Olympic rugby sevens medal ever. #ParisOlympics2024 #Paris2024 #olympics #rugbyunion #RugbySevens #rugby #TeamUSA @usarugby

Ilona also spoke about competing for her family and how “broken” she was after losing in her last Olympic competition, and I am now entirely unwell.

Not to be dramatic, but I would run through a brick wall for Ilona Maher.

Jordan Chiles and Team USA win gold medal

Chiles gets the gold!

Jordan Chiles, UCLA Bruins gymnastic great, and her teammates earned a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Tuesday. Chiles and her teammates Simone Biles, Suni Less, Hezly Rivera and Jade Carey won the top spot over Italy by nearly 6 points.

The US Women finished with a 171.296.  The American team looked great throughout. Chiles had an error when she fell during her beam mount with a front pink salto.

Suni Lee took to the floor today, as Jade Carey struggled with illness, and put together a great routine, at 13.533 to help the USA score high. One of the other notable scores was Biles on the beam, earning a 14.366 overall.

Chiles got redemption when she did her floor routine, as many call it one of the most “stunning floor routines of her career”.

The gold gave the US their 22nd medal overall and 10th gold. There have been 52 gold medals awarded in the 2024 Olympics, and 329 will be given out before it’s all said and done.

New Zealand’s women’s rugby team performed an exhilarating Haka after their gold medal win

New Zealand celebrated their women’s rugby gold with an electric Haka performance.

New Zealand’s women’s rugby team defended its gold medal in rugby sevens at the 2024 Paris Olympics and celebrated with a thrilling Haka.

On Tuesday, after New Zealand bested Canada 19-12 in the final and they received their gold medals, the entire team performed the Haka — a traditional Māori ceremonial dance. The dance has become more well known in the sports world for its use before games and after victories by New Zealand in rugby.

This rendition by New Zealand’s women’s rugby sevens team was quite electric, and the fans in Paris were treated to a thrilling show after the gold medal match.

Norwegian swimmer Henrik Christiansen’s TikToks about his Olympic Village chocolate muffin obsession deserve a medal

Olympic muffin man content? YES!

Norwegian swimmer Henrik Christiansen has been making a wild amount of TikTok videos about chocolate muffins in the Paris Olympic Village.

It seemingly started with a very casual TikTok video where Henrik reviewed tons of food he had access to while competing. In the clip, Henrik rated the chocolate muffin as “insane” and with an “11/10” rating. Nothing seems wild about that, right? But, oh, that was only the beginning.

Soon, Henrik’s TikTok account began filling up with tons of chocolate muffin content. I mean,  these muffins must have superpowers because the muffin mania has gotten so unbelievably out of hand. BUT. WE. CAN’T. LOOK. AWAY. These are gold medal-worthy, and it only feels right to share them with you.
