Notre Dame vs Navy Game Preview

Why Navy Will Win

The defense is playing well enough to keep this interesting.

The offense isn’t running and controlling games like it might want to, but the run defense was great against Cincinnati, it’s been able to hold up enough to stay in games, and the whole formula might slow things down.

No, the running game doesn’t go on enough long, good marches, but the team still holds the ball for close to 35 minutes.

However …

Why Notre Dame Will Win

Everyone is throwing on the Midshipmen.

Notre Dame isn’t throwing well enough to bomb away, but it doesn’t need to be Tennessee to open things up. As long as Drew Pyne is able to hit half of his passes and connect on the third down shots, the running game will do the rest.

The offense doesn’t have to take any chances. Just keep moving, and the defense that held Clemson to 90 yards on the ground and hasn’t allowed more than 100 rushing yards five of the last seven games should take care of the rest.

What’s Going To Happen

Navy is 1-5 when it doesn’t run for more than 215 yards, and 2-1 when it does. Marshall is the only team to get past 215 against the Irish – Navy won’t get there.

The style of the Midshipmen will keep this from getting too out of hand, but Notre Dame will be in control from the late first quarter on.

Notre Dame vs Navy Game Preview

Why Navy Will Win

Navy might not be as strong or as effective as it should be – the running game isn’t a dominant force that takes over games – but it’s still Navy.

This team still controls the clock, it still runs the option, and it’s getting just good enough to push good teams like Cincinnati and SMU even when it’s not running for 300 yards.

Notre Dame’s defense has been terrific all season long, but it just got hit by North Carolina for 224 yards. As much as Navy wants to slow things down, it’s going to be even more deliberate in this – it’ll have the ball for 36 minutes. However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Notre Dame Will Win

Notre Dame’s defense is having problems … against teams that can throw.

North Carolina might have run well last week, but that’s a totally different animal than what Navy brings – the Midshipmen don’t have Sam Howell at quarterback.

You threw for as many yards last week as Navy did in its win over Tulsa.

Yeah, it’s Navy, and yeah, it might have a knuckleball of an offense, but the Irish defensive front isn’t going to allow anything from the fullbacks up the gut and there won’t be any issues for this linebacking corps to hold up on the outside.

And that’s the option – do both of those things, and everything will be okay.

Along with a defense that should be able to handle what’s coming …

What’s Going To Happen

Notre Dame has an offense, too.

There’s no need to take any chances here. Run the ball, keep running it, and give Navy a taste of its own medicine by controlling the clock enough on the ground to matter.

Safe, easy throws. Don’t be afraid to punt and win the field position battle, and don’t give the Navy offense anything easy to work with. The Irish can do that – it only has one turnover in the last four games.

Don’t expect sensational – there might not be another run like Kyren Williams came up with last week against the Tar Heels – but methodical will work.

How crazy is it to try predicting a college football season months in advance when 1) there wasn’t any spring ball, 2) there aren’t any real depth charts to go off of, and 3) we don’t even know what the 2020 season is going to be?

Just crazy enough to potentially get some fantastic values on the early lines.

You can bet now at BetMGM on a whole lot of college football games – including going really insane looking at lines in November – with the possibility of hitting something big. So  …

Notre Dame vs Navy Game Preview: Preseason Version

Why Navy Will Win

Considering the lack of preparation this offseason on all sides, Navy being able to do what it does with its precision and timing might not be that much of a problem. In the Week 0 game, it should be able to grind down the clock enough to keep the score low, control drives, and keep the tempo of the game on its side.

Eight starters are back on a defense that got gouged in last year’s 52-20 loss, but the Irish have a whole slew of parts they have to replace. Six Notre Dame players were selected in the NFL Draft, and that doesn’t count RB Tony Jones, DE Jamir Jones, WR Chris Finke and S Jalen Elliott. However …

Why Notre Dame Will Win

The Irish offensive line should be able to hammer down the Navy defensive front.

Yeah, Notre Dame just lost a ton of talent, but OT Liam Eichenberg and four starters are expected back on an offensive line that might be a killer. The Navy defensive front loses its 300-pounders from last year and – like normal – has a slew of 250-pounders trying to hold up.

The Irish only ran for 105 yards and were held to just over three yards per carry – and won by 32. Ian Book might not throw for five touchdowns again, but the offense should be able to keep it simple, and …

What’s Going To Happen

The experience of the Notre Dame linebacking corps should be able to take over early on.

How do you stop the option? Discipline, and the Irish have the linebackers who can make up for the losses on the defensive front.

This will be a strong Navy team again, but the difference will be on the offensive fronts. The Midshipmen have to replace three starters – and QB Malcolm Perry – and the Irish will have the bulk to to take over early on.
