Week 3 win lifts the Browns up in NFL power poll

The Browns play the team directly above them, Dallas, in Week 4

Say goodbye to the bottom third, Browns fans! Sunday’s win over the Washington Football Team elevated the Browns well out of the 20s in the latest NFL power poll from our friends at Touchdown Wire.

Cleveland now sits at No. 18 after Week 3. That’s up from 22nd a week ago and comes thanks in part to an impressive showing by the defense, which demonstrated the ability to get the ball back. The Browns picked off Washington QB Dwayne Haskins three times, the first three INTs of the year for a banged-up Browns secondary.

It’s still a long climb upwards, but the Browns have proven they can now comfortably win the games they are expected to win. The upward mobility gets a test in Week 4 with a visit to Dallas, which sits one spot above the Browns at No. 17 with its 1-2 record.

Kevin Stefanski’s disciplined, mature approach helps Browns win the games they should

This is a team that is learning how to win and it feels like they might finally have the right leader to show them the way

The Cleveland Browns 34-20 win over the Washington Football Team on Sunday may have been a loss in years prior. Browns fans have witnessed their beloved team lose games in myriad ways over the years. Many times the losses came in a fashion that could have been avoided with different decision-making during the critical points of the game.

The Browns started the second half against Washington ahead 17-7 but coughed up the lead, losing the third quarter 13-0. The offense stalled early in the half and the defense gave up big plays in the passing game. The Browns passing game and the defense are both a work in progress. The lead was lost and momentum was with the Football Team.

In past years, this game could have easily gone the other way after losing an advantage at halftime. Certainly, former Browns coaches have become unhinged in the face of less adversity. Many have abandoned game plans in similar scenarios, trying to dial up things that the team wasn’t prepared to carry out. However, there was no panic in new head coach Kevin Stefanski.

It has been years since the Browns have had an identity, which surely aided in past coaching blunders. Not now. Stefanski has the pulse of his team and knows what they do well.

It’s one thing to say it or think it and another to have the discipline to lean on the run game while losing in the second half. Stefanski knew what his team needed and executed a well-designed running attack featuring Nick Chubb with a side of Kareem Hunt.

The Browns offensive line played a physical brand of football, executing  Stefanski’s plan of attack at a high level. Chubb delivered multiple elite runs taking advantage of some opportunistic takeaways by the defense. The Browns methodically pulled way from Washington with Chubb and Hunt leading the way.

The Washington Football Team is not a very good team in totality. They have an impressive defensive line but the Browns were better. Stefanski’s ability to stay patient and stick with the strength of his team was profound. To see the Browns win with mature, well-composed and organized coaching was quite refreshing and my biggest positive takeaway from this game.

It was most definitely a game they should win. However, I’m not taking it for granted because the Browns have lost so many just like it before. This is a team that is learning how to win and it feels like they might finally have the right leader to show them the way.

LOOK: M&T Bank Stadium at the end of a rainbow before “Monday Night Football” kickoff

Hopefully, a rainbow offers the Baltimore Ravens some luck on “Monday Night Football”, appearing just before kickoff against the Chiefs.

Are you superstitious? Well, then this is a sight for Baltimore Ravens fans in Week 3.

A rainbow appeared over M&T Bank Stadium — home of the Ravens — just prior to kickoff in their tilt against the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs on “Monday Night Football.”

Quick, someone search those empty stands for a pot of gold!

This game has already endured a lot of hype, affecting everything from bets to nerves. With Baltimore fans and players alike eagerly awaiting kickoff, I’m sure everyone is looking for signs that the home team will emerge victorious. Plus, who doesn’t love a rainbow?

Sure, the Ravens should be good enough to beat the Chiefs without any unnatural assistance, but when you’re facing a team as good as Kansas City and their star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, having a little luck on your side never hurts.

Ravens vs. Chiefs inactives: Who’s not playing on ‘Monday Night Football’

The Baltimore Ravens have kept their inactives list largely the same in Week 3 against the Kansas City Chiefs despite good health this week.

The Baltimore Ravens enter their first prime-time game of the 2020 NFL season in pretty great health. Going up against the Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore will need all the help they can get. Still, it left open the opportunity for some interesting names on the inactive list this week.

Though a few players were spotted on the Ravens’ injury report this week, coach John Harbaugh said all were expected to be available for this game. However, wide receiver Chris Moore (broken finger) and defensive tackle Justin Madubuike (knee) are both inactive after being listed as “questionable” on the final injury report. Running back Justice Hill (thigh) is also inactive despite practicing all week, pointing toward Baltimore only keeping three backs active each week moving forward.

Take a look at the players the Ravens and Chiefs have inactive for Week 3.

Baltimore Ravens Week 3 inactives:

Player Position
Trace McSorley QB
Chris Moore WR
Geno Stone S
Justice Hill RB
Ben Bredeson G
Justin Madubuike DT

Texans are bringing in S Earl Thomas for a visit

The Houston Texans are bringing in former Seattle Seahawks and Baltimore Ravens safety Earl Thomas for a workout.

The Houston Texans are figuring out a way to fix their secondary, and it could include tapping All-Pro talent currently available in free agency.

The Texans are bringing in former Seattle Seahawks and Baltimore Ravens safety Earl Thomas for a tryout.

Thomas was with the Ravens through the 2020 preseason until he was cut in August for off-field issues.

The former Super Bowl champion has 30 career interceptions under his belt with 71 pass breakups and 12 forced fumbles. Through 140 career games, Thomas has logged 713 combined tackles and 13 tackles for loss.

The Texans currently have Justin Reid, A.J. Moore, Eric Murray, and Michael Thomas as safeties.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, a signing is “more likely than not.”

Due to COVID-19 protocols, Thomas probably won’t play against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 4, but he could be available in Week 5 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Texans coach Bill O’Brien outlines positives from 28-21 loss to the Steelers

Houston Texans coach Bill O’Brien was hesitant to talk about the positives from the 28-21 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, but there were some.

The Houston Texans gave up a four-point halftime lead to the Pittsburgh Steelers en route to a 28-21 loss in Week 3 that sends the club to an 0-3 start, but there were some positives in the game.

Coach Bill O’Brien prefaced the positives in his Monday presser that “it stinks when you have to talk about positives” after a loss, but nonetheless acknowledged the obvious points of light.

“We played pretty good complementary football in the first half,” O’Brien said. “Obviously, we’ve played three really good teams. We’re not there yet. We didn’t win any of those games but feel like we’ve definitely improved, and we need to try to play 60 minutes of that type of football.”

The loss to the Steelers was the first time the Texans led at halftime. Furthermore, after the Steelers pulled ahead 17-14, and would have possession to open the second half, Houston scored a touchdown to take a 21-17 lead at the break and stifle the Steelers’ momentum.

Houston also led 21-20 in the fourth quarter. The club hasn’t played a full 60 minutes of football, or at least excellent enough in other parts to secure victory after four quarters, but the Texans’ ability to stay with Pittsburgh was encouraging.

“I think if we play 60 minutes of that type of football we can win,” said O’Brien. “But we’ve got to get it going here very quickly. Like I said last week, we’ve got to get it going.”

The Texans’ next opponent is another desperate team seeking to meet their potential and salvage a disastrous 0-3 start. The Minnesota Vikings lost a squeaker at home, 31-30, to the Tennessee Titans. Houston will have to play a full 60 minutes against the Vikings, or else have to put up with another 10,080 minutes of anguish and regret as another win slipped way, much like the season.

Chargers dominated in the trenches in loss to Panthers

Both sides of the line for the Chargers were outmatched, and penalties were another killer.

The list of reasons why the Chargers lost to the Panthers can go on and on. But one of the areas that had a factor in Los Angeles’ loss was their inability to win the battle in the trenches.

L.A. has leaned heavily on their pass-rush the first two games of the seasons, and while they had a favorable matchup against a Carolina offensive line that has struggled in the past couple of weeks, they were unable to generate consistent pressure or push.

Star edge defender Joey Bosa, who acquired the clutch sack in the fourth quarter, was outperformed by tackle Taylor Moton for the majority of the game. Other than the sack, Bosa only finished with two quarterback pressures.

Bosa was hindered by an ongoing tricep issue, which could have been a reason for his lackluster performance. But regardless, the Panthers did a great job with their game-plan by double teaming him.

Opposite of Bosa was Uchenna Nwosu, who filled in for the injured Melvin Ingram. Nwosu showed promise in the starting role, leading the team in quarterback pressures with five. He also played a role in slowing the run on a few plays.

The interior defensive line was not much better. Defensive tackles Linval Joseph and Jerry Tillery only combined for one quarterback pressure, and both players struggled to hold their own against the run.

As a result, quarterback Teddy Bridgewater had plenty of time to distribute the wealth. Bridgewater was efficient at attacking the middle of the field, where the rest of the team’s defenders hardly had any answer for wide receiver Robby Anderson and company.

On the other side of the ball, the Chargers offensive line was outmatched against a Panthers defensive line that had not posted a sack in the first two games of the season.

Edge defender Brian Burns forced a fumble on quarterback Justin Herbert in the first half. They kept pressuring the rookie quarterback and getting in his face anytime he dropped back.

The offensive line also lost tackle Bryan Bulaga to a back injury. They had already been without guard Trai Turner, who was inactive with a groin injury. Ryan Groy played the majority of the game at right guard in place of Trai Turner, and Trey Pipkins replaced Bulaga in the first half.

In total, Carolina produced 22 quarterback pressures, eight QB hits and sacked Herbert twice.

Luckily, Herbert’s pocket presence and mobility bailed the group out on a handful of occasions. But that’s not guaranteed moving forward, especially since they’re facing a Buccaneers defensive line that boasts Shaq Barrett and Ndamukong Suh next weekend.

Penalties on both lines were another thing that killed the Chargers.

Tillery was called for illegal-formation on a field goal attempt, which led to the Panthers lone touchdown. Bosa was dinged for neutral zone infraction/offsides in crucial moments. The Chargers had three red-zone penalties from offensive linemen.

Los Angeles will look to execute better and limit the mistakes on the lines this upcoming Sunday against the Tom Brady-led Buccaneers.

Offensive line once again dominates the Browns’ top PFF grades

3 of the top 4 offensive grades went to the Browns OL

It’s becoming a weekly theme for the Cleveland Browns. The Pro Football Focus grades for the team’s 34-20 win over Washington in Week 3 reflect very highly on the Cleveland offensive line, just as they did in the first two weeks.

Three of the Browns’ top four offensive grades from PFF in Week 3 went to offensive linemen.

  • Joel Bitonio – 81.0
  • Wyatt Teller – 80.3
  • Jack Conklin – 73.2

Only WR Odell Beckham Jr. worked his way into the top foursome, scoring a season-high 76.6 in the game. Fellow wideout Jarvis Landry rounds out the top five with a 73.0 grade.

On defense, Myles Garrett’s dominant performance shot to the top of the PFF scores. Garrett earned a 91.0 overall grade and a 91.4 pass rush grade.

Linebacker B.J. Goodson parlayed his best game in a Browns uniform into a strong 84.4 overall grade. Most of that came from a 90.8 mark in coverage that was helped by an interception. CB Kevin Johnson, in his Browns debut, was the only other Cleveland defender to top the 70.0 overall mark.

At the other end of the grading scale…

  • CB M.J. Stewart – 30.2 overall
  • LB Sione Takitaki – 34.0
  • LB Mack Wilson – 36.9 in six snaps
  • S Ronnie Harrison – 46.3 in six snaps
  • WR JoJo Natson – 49.5 in four snaps

Report: Texans to sign defensive linemen Corey Liuget, Ryan Glasgow to practice squad

The Houston Texans are adding veteran depth to their defensive line by signing Corey Liuget and Ryan Glasgow to the practice squad.

The Houston Texans are adding veteran depth to their defensive line via the practice squad.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the club will sign defensive tackle Ryan Glasgow to the practice squad and also defensive lineman Corey Liuget.

The Texans had worked out Glasgow, and they also brought in Liuget for visits early in September and also on Friday last week. The two veterans have been on the Texans’ radar for a month.

Houston needs to find a way to beef up their run defense, and Glasgow and Liuget could provide them that chance. In Week 3, the Texans marked rookie defensive tackle Ross Blacklock as inactive. On the ground, Houston’s run defense gave out in the second half with Pittsburgh finishing with 169 en route to a 28-21 win that drops Houston to 0-3 for the second time in three seasons.
