NFL trade deadline: Tracking Broncos news and rumors

We will be tracking Broncos news and rumors on this page leading up to the NFL’s trade deadline.

Story update: The Denver Broncos did not make any trades on Tuesday. See our original post below.

The 2023 NFL trade deadline (2:00 p.m. MT today) is right around the corner, and we will be tracking Denver Broncos news and rumors leading up to the deadline on this page.

Broncos coach Sean Payton has said Denver is not actively shopping players, but that hasn’t stopped other teams from calling. Teams are believed to be interested in the following players, according to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated:

  • ILB Josey Jewell
  • DB Justin Simmons
  • CB Pat Surtain
  • LT Garett Bolles
  • WR Jerry Jeudy
  • WR Courtland Sutton

The Broncos will not trade Surtain, but Denver might entertain offers for the other players listed above in an effort to acquire more draft capital for 2024. Here’s a look at the Broncos’ current order of picks for next year’s draft:

Round 1: own pick
Round 3: own or via Saints (Sean Payton trade)
Round 4: own or via Dolphins (Bradley Chubb trade)
Round 5: own pick
Round 5: via Jets (Jacob Martin trade)
Round 6: via 49ers (Randy Gregory trade)

Will the team have any more draft picks by 2:00 p.m. MT on Tuesday? We’ll be tracking every potential move on this page.

Should the Dolphins be looking to make a trade at the deadline?

There will be options at the deadline, should Miami make a move?

Through eight weeks, the Miami Dolphins have been one of the hottest teams in football, going 6-2 over that stretch with their only losses coming against the Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills, two Super Bowl contenders.

At the near midpoint of the season, the NFL’s trade deadline has arrived, with many teams wavering between buying and selling parts.

With Miami setting their sights on the postseason, should they consider making a trade, and if so, for what?

Prior to the start of the 2023 campaign, all of the talk was on Miami’s backfield. Fans clamored for Dalvin Cook to Jonathan Taylor before one signed with the New York Jets and the other was placed on PUP before signing an extension.

Through eight weeks, Miami’s stable of running backs has been strong. The group leads the league in rushing yards per game (151.8) and yards per attempt (5.9). Raheem Mostert, the team’s lead back, tops the NFL in rushing touchdowns with 10.

Rookie sensation De’Von Achane took the league by storm in his first few games before being placed on injured reserve, rushing for 460 yards and five touchdowns on an incredible 12.1 yards per attempt. Not to mention he brought in nine receptions for 67 yards and two more scores.

Offensively, the one spot that could use some help would be the offensive line, as left tackle Terron Armstead and left guard Isaiah Wynn have been on injured reserve themselves. Center Connor Williams has been dealing with a groin injury that’s kept him out of three games, and right guard Robert Hunt left their last game against the New England Patriots with a hamstring injury.

While the Dolphins have been able to hold it all together, could another depth offensive lineman help?

The short answer is yes, but not many teams are willing to part with offensive linemen due to the struggles with the groups around the league.

Miami could swing a trade for someone like Joseph Noteboom from the Los Angeles Rams, who signed essentially a three-year, $40 million deal in 2022 with two void years tacked onto the end.

However, Noteboom hasn’t been great when he’s played this year, starting in five games and playing three separate positions. And, if Miami were to acquire him, they’d be digging themselves into an even larger financial hole in 2024, as he’d come with a $15 million cap hit next year.

Defensively, the Dolphins are starting to get healthy, but like any team, they’re an injury to a key player or two away from having things fall apart.

If Jalen Ramsey, Jevon Holland, Xavien Howard, Christian Wilkins or Jerome Baker go down for a significant amount of time, Vic Fangio’s defense could be in for some trouble.

The Chicago Bears have made it known that cornerback Jaylon Johnson is on the trade block. He’s Pro Football Focus’ third-highest-rated player at the position through the first eight weeks of the season.

He’s in the final year of his rookie deal, so he’d likely only be a rental, but if Miami could swing a mid-round draft pick for him, having Ramsey, Howard, Johnson and Kader Kohou as your top four cornerbacks wouldn’t be bad at all.

The big question is the price for a lot of these trades. General manager Chris Grier has done a great job bringing in veteran talent through free agency and trades, but eventually, they’ll have to start using high draft picks again to bring in some young, inexpensive players who can make an impact.

If teams’ are asking for picks in the top three rounds, the Dolphins should stay away. The team is set up to compete now, but that doesn’t mean they should completely mortgage their future.

If prices are reasonable, and Grier and his right-hand man, Brandon Shore, feel comfortable, they should pull the trigger and make the addition. But, again, that’s only if it’s a good deal.

5 Browns potential WR targets at the NFL trade deadline

The trade deadline is vastly approaching and the Browns are looking for a wide receiver…

The NFL trade deadline has arrived. Teams have until 4 PM EST today to get deals reported to the NFL office if they want to add talent to their rosters. The Cleveland Browns have been reported to be in the market for a wide receiver to add to their offense as they continue to attempt to jumpstart that side of the football. Could names like Jerry Jeudy of the Denver Broncos or Marquise Brown of the Arizona Cardinals be targets?

Amari Cooper has been Amari Cooper, but other than that the wide receiver unit has been a disappointment for the Browns. Elijah Moore has only recently gotten out of a gadget role, Donovan Peoples-Jones is one of the worst separators in the NFL and has disappeared this season, and third round picks David Bell and Cedric Tillman see the field sparingly.

As the Browns sit at 4-3 and just average quarterback play away from a much better record, here are five wide receiver targets that could help to push them over the top.

Report: Bears’ top CB Jaylon Johnson requests trade at deadline

A top player the #Bills could target at the trade deadline:

The Chicago Bears could be moving one of the top players available at the 2023 NFL trade deadline and he could be of interest to the Buffalo Bills.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson has requested a trade ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.

Johnson is on the final year of his rookie deal and will be a free agent at the end of the season. It appears Chicago and Johnson will not be coming to terms on an extension, so he looks like he will potentially be moving on with the Bears at a 2-6 record.

The 24-year-old cornerback was drafted in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft. In 45 career games, Johnson has 143 tackles, including four for loss, with three interceptions and three forced fumbles. Pro Football Focus grades him as an 84.4 overall so far this season, the football analytics outlet’s third-best mark for any cornerback in the league.

In terms of the Bills, cornerback is amongst their top positions that need addressing.

Buffalo lost All-Pro Tre’Davious White (Achilles) for the season. Now the team seems to have given up on former first-round pick Kaiir Elam who might be traded himself. But because of the Elam situation, Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane might need three teams to tango in order to make a deal–or would have to find a way for Chicago to take Elam.

Bills Wire will continue to provide coverage of all-things 2023 NFL trade deadline.

Jaguars not ‘searching just to search’ at NFL trade deadline

Jaguars coach Doug Pederson says his team will make a trade Tuesday “if it’s a no-brainer.”

The Jacksonville Jaguars jump out as an obvious candidate to be a buyer before the 4 p.m. NFL trade deadline Tuesday.

At 6-2, they’re well-positioned to win the AFC South and potentially make a run at their first ever Super Bowl appearance. But an underwhelming pass rush that ranks 25th in the NFL in sacks could be the weak link that holds the Jaguars back.

So, logically, it’d make sense for Jacksonville — a team still loaded with draft capital — to move some pieces Tuesday to go after one of the pass rushers potentially on the market.

“You look and see if there’s a player that could help you, I don’t think you go searching just to search for anybody,” Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said Monday. “You got to make sure it’s the right fit. Somebody that can add value and a piece that you’re maybe missing.

“We are getting some guys healthy and back too, so that plays a factor in it here in the next few weeks. We’ll take a look and if it’s a no-brainer, you pull the trigger, if not, you move on with guys you have because they’re the ones that got you here.”

Among the players the Jaguars could get back from injury are wide receiver Zay Jones, cornerback Tyson Campbell, and safety Andre Cisco, who all missed the team’s Week 8 win against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

There’s also defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton, who only played 14 snaps in his first game back from injured reserve, who could provide more push up the middle.

Still, there’s a reason multiple reports indicate the Jaguars made an effort to acquire Danielle Hunter from the Minnesota Vikings in the offseason.

When is the NFL trade deadline?

The 2023 NFL trade deadline is 2:00 p.m. MT on Tuesday, Oct. 31.

The 2023 NFL trade deadline has been set for 2:00 p.m. MT on Tuesday, Oct. 31. After that deadline, clubs will not be able to make trades until the 2024 NFL offseason.

After the trade deadline passes, teams can still sign free agents and make waiver wire claims to add new talent during the season.

The Denver Broncos have said that they’re not actively shopping players ahead of the trade deadline, but other teams have called Denver in recent weeks. The Broncos will not trade star cornerback Pat Surtain, but the team is listening to offers for other players.

The most likely trade candidate for Denver seems to be wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, who has drawn interest from other teams for more than a year. The Broncos have at least one offer on the table for Jeudy (according to ProFootballTalk.com), and the looming deadline might spark action.

Denver has already traded one player this season (outside linebacker Randy Gregory to the San Francisco 49ers), and fans will now wait to see if any more moves are on the way. We will be tracking any potential trades on Broncos Wire leading up to the deadline.

Commanders WR Terry McLaurin takes full accountability

McLaurin, the ultimate leader: “I have to be better.”

When the Washington Commanders throw the football to wide receiver Terry McLaurin, good things happen for the offense. It’s been that way since McLaurin’s rookie season in 2019, regardless of the quarterback.

In Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles, McLaurin caught five passes for 63 yards and a touchdown. He could’ve had a lot more. Quarterback Sam Howell just missed one off McLaurin’s fingertips in the end zone at one point.

However, it was two misses in the fourth quarter that will haunt Howell and McLaurin the most.

Down 31-24, Washington was driving with 4:23 remaining in the game. On third-and-8, Howell sees McLaurin, firing the ball to him that would’ve gone for a first down. The throw was off but hit McLaurin’s face mask.

On the next play, Howell, under duress, sees McLaurin again, this time throwing a bit low to McLaurin, who sees the ball bounce off his hands and Washington turned the ball over on downs.

While neither throw was perfect, both were catchable. McLaurin’s makes more difficult catches on a weekly basis.

For his part, Howell acknowledged he needed to be more accurate on each throw.

But McLaurin, the ultimate leader, took full accountability.

“I’m one of the leaders of this team; I pride myself on making tough plays,” McLaurin said. “I got to be better in those situations, and I’m going to be better. So I take accountability for those tough plays I missed, and I’ll encourage the guys to do the same.”

Spoken like a true leader.

Broncos’ order of draft picks before NFL trade dadline

Before the NFL trade deadline, the Broncos hold 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 5th and 6th round picks to use in the 2024 NFL draft.

Ahead of the NFL trade deadline (2:00 p.m. MT today), the Denver Broncos currently hold six picks to use in the 2024 NFL draft.

The Broncos have said they’re not actively shopping players, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see the team acquire more picks between now and Tuesday afternoon’s trade deadline. Denver currently has selections in the first, third, fourth, fifth and sixth rounds of next April’s draft.

Round 1: own pick
Round 3: own or via Saints (Sean Payton trade)
Round 4: own or via Dolphins (Bradley Chubb trade)
Round 5: own pick
Round 5: via Jets (Jacob Martin trade)
Round 6: via 49ers (Randy Gregory trade)

The team’s original second-round pick was sent to the New Orleans Saints earlier this year as part of the trade for coach Sean Payton. It’s unclear if the team’s third- and fourth-round picks are their original picks or selections that were acquired in previous trades.

The 2024 NFL draft will be held in Detroit from April 25-27.

Report: Commanders not likely to deal safety Kamren Curl

It sounds like the Commanders want to keep Kam Curl around for a while.

The NFL trade deadline is on Tuesday, and the Washington Commanders have multiple players who could be moved. While Washington isn’t expected to move several players, defensive ends Montez Sweat and Chase Young and quarterback Jacoby Brissett are often the most discussed regarding a potential trade.

Clearly, Washington ownership is looking at players on expiring deals and looking to extract some value before they leave in free agency. Apparently, the Commanders have already made their minds up on one player.

According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, safety Kamren Curl — who is in the final year of his rookie contract — is not expected to be traded. Washington would prefer to sign Curl to a long-term deal.

Head coach Ron Rivera has mentioned multiple times in the past he’d like to re-sign Curl. However, Rivera’s job security is tenuous under new owner Josh Harris. But Rivera and the current front office have clearly placed a high value on Curl.

The Commanders have also long maintained they wanted to extend Sweat. However, Washington’s ownership situation stalled any potential extensions for Curl and Sweat, and the Commanders finally realized retaining Sweat and Young would not be a wise investment.

At least you can cross Curl off any list of potential ex-Commanders at Tuesday’s trade deadline.

Bears CB Jaylon Johnson has requested a trade

The Bears cornerback could be on the move ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline.

Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles said things would likely be quiet for the team around this year’s trade deadline. Not anymore.

According to ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson has requested a trade ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.

Johnson, who is a free agent at the end of the season, had been discussing a long-term deal with the Bears as recently as last week. The two sides remain apart on a deal, and the team has given Johnson permission to seek a trade. Johnson is the second notable Bears player to have requested a trade under Ryan Poles since he was hired as general manager, joining Roquan Smith, who was dealt last year at the deadline to the Baltimore Ravens.

The 24-year-old cornerback was drafted in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Utah and is one of the final pillars left from the Ryan Pace era. Johnson has proven himself to be one of the better cover corners in the league and is having arguably the best season of his career. He has two interceptions and is allowing a completion percentage of just 47% with no touchdowns.

With Johnson now on the market, he becomes one of the hottest names to watch ahead of the deadline. The Bears have until 3 p.m. CT on Tuesday to make a trade. Otherwise, Johnson will play out the season in Chicago.
