Social media reacts to Commanders trading Montez Sweat to Bears

Social media agrees this is a good trade for the Commanders.

The Washington Commanders traded defensive end Montez Sweat to the Chicago Bears Tuesday, ahead of the NFL trade deadline. In return, Washington receives Chicago’s second-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft, which, if the season ended today, would be No. 35 overall.

The Commanders long wanted to retain Sweat, but the change in ownership delayed any chances at a potential long-term deal. Rather than losing Sweat for a compensatory third-round selection in 2025, Washington agreed to trade Sweat, guaranteeing compensation in 2024.

Compensatory selections are not guaranteed. If the Commanders spent a specific amount in free agency in 2024, it could cancel any compensatory pick Washington would receive in 2025, making this an excellent move for the Commanders and new owner Josh Harris.

What did social media think of the trade? Here are some of the best reactions to the Sweat trade.

Montez Sweat trade grades: Who won the Bears – Commanders deal?

The Bears get a star pass rusher while the Commanders start investing in a rebuild.

Tuesday’s Halloween NFL trade deadline began with a doozy.

The Washington Commanders sent underrated pass rusher Montez Sweat to the Chicago Bears in a move that will have significant ramifications for both organizations. Washington’s trade potentially signals that it prefers the future of fellow defensive lineman Chase Young. In Chicago, the Bears finally have their hopeful franchise pass rusher (though they still have to re-sign him to a long-term extension).

It’s an intriguing situation for both teams and one we’ll have to monitor closely in the coming months. Let’s hand out some initial grades and determine who came out on top of this blockbuster deal between Chicago and Washington.

Commanders agree to trade DE Montez Sweat to Bears

The Commanders agree to send Montez Sweat to the Bears.

The Washington Commanders have made a move ahead of Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline. Washington agrees to send defensive end Montez Sweat to the Chicago Bears for a second-round pick, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

Sweat, 27, is in the final year of his rookie contract and leads the Commanders with 6.5 sacks in 2023. The Commanders had been fielding calls for Sweat and fellow defensive end Chase Young.

Sweat, a first-round pick in 2019, has 35.5 career sacks, and his career-high is nine, set in 2020. He is on pace to exceed that number in 2023.

Washington had preferred to extend Sweat, but the change in ownership stalled those plans. New owner Josh Harris took over the Commanders on July 20.

According to Adam Schefter, the second-round pick is in 2024.

Bears are trading for Commanders DE Montez Sweat

The Bears have bolstered their defensive line with a trade for Commanders DE Montez Sweat.

The Chicago Bears have bolstered their defensive line in a huge way with the trade for Washington Commanders defensive end Montez Sweat, according to several NFL insiders.

As far as compensation goes, the Bears are sending a 2024 second-round pick to the Commanders in the trade for Sweat. And considering Chicago’s struggling record, it could very well be another high second-round pick.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Bears and Commanders have “been in talks for some time” where both Sweat and Chase Young were discussed. Brad Biggs reported earlier that Chicago was close to adding help at edge rusher.

With Sweat in the last year of his contract, the Bears will need to sign him to an extension. The good news is Chicago is slated to have $110 million in salary cap space in 2024.

In eight games this season with Washington, Sweat has totaled 32 tackles, including 10 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, 11 QB hits, two forced fumbles and one pass breakup.

Sweat’s 6.5 sacks through the first eight games is the same amount of sacks that Chicago has as an entire defensive line. So it’s easy to see why the Bears made the move.

Report: Bears could be close to trading for defensive end ahead of NFL deadline

With the NFL trade deadline just hours away, the Bears are reportedly closing in on acquiring a defensive end.

While the overnight news of Jaylon Johnson requesting a trade out of town is still very much fresh, the Chicago Bears are close to bringing in someone to help out in the pass rush department.

According to the Chicago Tribune’s Brad Biggs, the Bears have the wheels in motion to acquire a defensive end before Tuesday’s 3 p.m. CT trade deadline.

While Biggs doesn’t name any names, the obvious choice is Washington Commanders defensive end Chase Young — or even his teammate Montez Sweat. The Bears were linked to Young over the weekend.

On the surface, the deal would make a lot of sense. The Bears pass rush is awful. Chicago has generated just 10 sacks, the fewest in the NFL this season. This coming on the heels of just 20 sacks last year, which was also the lowest.

The primary concerns with Young are his health and his impending contract status. The former Ohio State has been sidelined over the previous two seasons with injuries. This year, however, he’s played in all seven games, including six starts, and recorded five sacks, 15 tackles, including six tackles for loss, and nine quarterback hits.

Young is in the final year of his rookie contract. The Bears would obviously like to have him around for the foreseeable future as they continue to build this thing up. Spotrac projects Young to fetch a four-year, $71.6 million deal in free agency.

The Bears have the money to swing a deal, but general manager Ryan Poles’ inability to keep homegrown talent has soured any belief that a long-term deal would get done.

Browns ‘chasing’ Jacoby Brissett from Commanders at NFL trade deadline

Could the Browns bring back a familiar face?

The NFL trade deadline is vastly approaching, and general manager Andrew Berry is not sitting on his hands. The Cleveland Browns have already been rumored to be in the market for a wide receiver, but now a report out of Washington has surfaced as well. According to NBC Sports’ JP Finley, the Browns are “chasing” quarterback Jacoby Brissett from the Washington Commanders as the deadline nears.

Brissett, of course, posted career-highs in Cleveland last year as he filled in for the suspended Deshaun Watson. The Browns went 4-7 with Brissett under center but did so while being supported by the NFL’s worst defense in that span.

Currently starting PJ Walker with no return of Watson on the table at this point, the Browns are desperate for an upgrade at quarterback. Given Brissett’s familiarity with the team and head coach Kevin Stefanski, this would fit like a glove.

The NFL trade deadline is at 4 PM EST today.

Bucs GM Jason Licht confirms that Mike Evans won’t be traded

Licht spoke on Good Morning Football during Tuesday’s trade deadline and asserted that Evans isn’t going anywhere.

Although there’s been speculation from those outside the Tampa Bay Buccaneers media sphere, it seems as if Bucs wide receiver [autotag]Mike Evans[/autotag] isn’t going anywhere.

Bucs general manager Jason Licht appeared on Good Morning Football Tuesday, which happened to be the NFL’s trade deadline. When asked if he would possibly trade Evans, he responded that he’s looking forward to Evans continuing his career — and his 1000-yard streak — with the Bucs. That would certainly seem to indicate that Evans won’t be traded, and given Tampa Bay’s current surrounding circumstances, that makes sense.

The Bucs are just one game back of the NFC South behind the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints, and if they still intend to compete for that top spot they held just two weeks ago, they’ll need Evans. As it stands, Evans has caught 33 balls for 507 yards and five touchdowns and has arguably still been the best producer in Tampa Bay’s offense this season.

Head coach Todd Bowles seemed to imply that the team won’t be making any moves either way at the deadline (understandable, with the team’s cap situation), but that the Bucs will be “listening” all day Tuesday. In short, the phone lines are open, but don’t expect any deals to get done.

9 trade candidates, ideas for Bengals to consider at NFL trade deadline

Bengals trade targets, how trades work and salary cap space info before the trade deadline.

The Cincinnati Bengals hit the trade deadline at 4-3 after successfully surging out of the bye to beat the San Francisco 49ers, finally starting to look like the Super Bowl contenders many thought they could be.

So the question is simple: Will they make a move?

Traditionally, the Bengals don’t do much at the trade deadline because they like to preserve assets and not sacrifice contention in future years for contention now.

Fans, understandably, though, want to see the team do something — anything, even.

So as the deadline approaches, here’s a quick look at some of the details surrounding the deadline and a Bengals-centric breakdown.

Bears safety Jaquan Brisker posts cryptic tweet following Jaylon Johnson’s trade request

Bears safety Jaquan Brisker posted a cryptic tweet that appeared to voice his displeasure with the Jaylon Johnson situation.

The Chicago Bears have granted cornerback Jaylon Johnson’s trade request, which comes after the two sides weren’t able to agree to a contract extension ahead of Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline.

Last week, Johnson said contract negotiations had picked back up after his impressive two-interception game. Unfortunately, it sounds like both sides weren’t able to find common ground, which led Johnson to request a trade late Monday night.

Someone who probably isn’t happy with how the Bears are handling things is safety Jaquan Brisker, who took to X (formerly Twitter) with a cryptic tweet that appeared to voice his displeasure with the Johnson situation.

If the Bears trade Johnson before the 3 p.m. CT deadline, he’ll be the second defensive leader in as many years to be traded away. Chicago traded linebacker Roquan Smith to the Baltimore Ravens last year, and the team didn’t win another game for the remainder of the season — heck, until Week 5 of the 2023 season.

General manager Ryan Poles is sending a message to the rest of the Bears locker room — and it’s not a positive one. Johnson has been one of the team’s best defensive players — and one of the best cover corners in the NFL this season — and Poles isn’t prepared to sign him long term.

With the trade deadline just hours away, we’ll soon know for sure whether Johnson will finish the season as a Bear or if he’s played his last down for Chicago.

Eagles among teams looking to add CB depth ahead of NFL trade deadline

With the NFL trade deadline just hours away, it appears the Eagles are in the cornerback market.

The NFL is an arm’s race and with the late season stretch approaching, the most successful teams will survive by adding talent that can stop the pass.

Chicago Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson is looking to be traded and according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Philadelphia is among the teams looking to add depth at the position.

Jordan Schultz reports that the Eagles are one of four teams discussing a deal for Johnson, but the cornerback desires an extension and wants to be among the highest paid at his position.

The Eagles have dealt with injuries at cornerback, and had rookies Sydney Brown and Eli Ricks playing in the slot against the Commanders last Sunday.

All-Pros Darius Slay and James Bradberry have both been solid, but they’ve dealt with injuries and Philadelphia can ill-afford to enter the postseason without adequate depth in the secondary.
