Broncos players brace for NFL trade deadline

“That’s above my pay grade,” Broncos safety Justin Simmons said of the NFL’s looming trade deadline.

The Denver Broncos have said publicly that they’re not actively shopping players ahead of Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline, but other teams have been calling Denver about potential trades.

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported last week that the Broncos “are actively looking for draft picks.” Breer also mentioned linebacker Josey Jewell, safety Justin Simmons, cornerback Pat Surtain, left tackle Garett Bolles and wide receivers Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton as players who could draw interest from other teams.

Denver won’t trade Surtain, but the team might be tempted to move the other players Breer mentioned, if the price is right. While the trade deadline approaches, players are left in limbo.

“For sure,” Simmons said on Sunday when asked if he hopes the team keeps the roster together instead of making trades to add draft picks. “I think we have the talent on the team as is, and we can definitely make this thing happen. That’s above my pay grade.

“I’m just going to keep showing up for this team and keep trying to find ways to lead and to win and to help my side of the ball be the best that we can be to help us win. If you’re asking me if I love the guys that we have in the room right now and the building, 100 percent. I think we can definitely do it.”

Jeudy seems to be the team’s most likely trade candidate. The Broncos already had an offer on the table for Jeudy going into Sunday’s game (according to ProFootballTalk.com), and Denver has been listening to offers for the receiver for more than a year. If we had to predict one Broncos player who will be off the roster by Tuesday night, it’d be Jeudy.

Denver has already made one trade this season, sending pass rusher Randy Gregory to the San Francisco 49ers in a late-round pick swap earlier this month. Time will tell if more trades are on the way.

The NFL trade deadline is 2:00 p.m. MT on Tuesday, Oct. 31.

Broncos coach Sean Payton on NFL trade deadline: We’re not shopping anyone

“We’re not openly or even remotely shopping anyone,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said of the NFL’s looming trade deadline.

Following their 24-9 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, the Denver Broncos do not plan to be sellers ahead of the NFL trade deadline on Tuesday.

“We’re not openly or even remotely shopping anyone,” Payton said during a conference call with reporters on Monday morning.

Denver’s coach admitted that teams have called the Broncos, but he implied that Denver has not been initiating any trade talks. That doesn’t mean the Broncos definitely won’t make any moves in the next 24 hours, but if Payton is to be believed, Denver isn’t itching to ship anyone out.

Payton’s comments on Monday were similar to his remarks made after Sunday’s win over the Chiefs.

“[W]e’re not the team looking to go out and buy,” Payton said Sunday. “We can’t control the buyers that call. We always pick the phone up — you have to professionally, but that’s it. This doesn’t — we have a plan on where we see ourselves, and that’s an honest answer. When I see or hear things, I chuckle because I’m thinking, ‘Well I haven’t talked to anyone about that,’ and if I haven’t, then it’s probably not true.”

There have been reports that Denver has received interest in wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, but there’s been no action on that front so far. We’ll see if that changes before Tuesday’s deadline at 2:00 p.m. MT.

Report: Bills searching for help on defense ahead of 2023 NFL trade deadline

The #Bills are reportedly in the market for help on defense ahead of the 2023 NFL trade deadline:

The Buffalo Bills are searching the market ahead of the 2023 NFL trade deadline for a cornerback, according to a report.

Per The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the Bills (5-3) have been asking around about that position ahead of Tuesday’s deadline:

The Baltimore Ravens are looking to add a running back, the Cleveland Browns are looking to add a receiver and the Buffalo Bills are scanning the cornerback market. The Washington Commanders are listening to offers on Chase Young and Montez Sweat. They want a second-rounder but have only received offers in the third-round range.

The interest Buffalo has reportedly expressed is not surprising. The two Bills players factoring into this discussion are Tre’Davious White and Kaiir Elam.

White’s season is over due to an Achilles injury. In an ideal world, your former first-round pick in Elam would help make up for White’s departure from the lineup… but he is not.

Buffalo’s Week 8 24-18 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers featured Elam’s name on the inactive list as a healthy scratch. Instead, veteran Josh Norman was called up from the practice squad.

But Elam might play a part here in a different way. The Bills are reportedly looking at needing three to tango.

Elam’s name has been tossed in trade rumors. However, it makes little sense for Buffalo to move him if there isn’t another plan in place to help makeup for the depth Elam provides–Or someone else that could potentially start.

Currently the Bills have Dane Jackson and Christian Benford as their top cornerbacks with White out. Both have dealt with their own bumps and bruises and have missed time, too.

Bills Wire will provide full coverage of the upcoming trade deadline.

Prioritizing 49ers needs at NFL trade deadline

A priority list for the #49ers at the trade deadline:

The NFL trade deadline is set for Tuesday at 1:00pm Pacific Time. It would make a lot of sense if the 49ers were active in trying to improve a club that’s now lost three games in a row.

Their addition of pass rusher Randy Gregory looked like it might be the perfect on-the-margins move that could put an uber-talented 49ers club over the top. Since acquiring him in a trade with the Broncos though, San Francisco is 0-3 and its defense hasn’t been able to come up with key stops.

Unfortunately for the 49ers there isn’t one obvious fix. They’re a mess at several spots. It’s unlikely they’re going to wheel and deal to address all of their deficiencies, so they’ll need to prioritize at the deadline. Here’s how we’d lay out those trade market priorities as they enter their Week 9 bye:

Stay or go: 10 players for Broncos to make decision on before NFL trade deadline

Should the Broncos trade these players before the NFL’s deadline?

After defeating the Kansas City Chiefs 24-9 on Sunday afternoon, the Denver Broncos are 3-5 going into their Week 9 bye. Will that be enough to convince Denver to not be sellers ahead of the NFL’s trade deadline on Tuesday?

If Broncos coach Sean Payton is to be believed, Denver wasn’t planning to make trades even before Sunday’s upset win.

“Honestly, and you guys know this, it’s a busy time of the year and there’s pressure on news media to be on top of potential stories, trade stories,” Payton said Sunday. “The teams that aren’t doing as well always fall into this position, and I understand it, but we’re not the team looking to go out and buy. We can’t control the buyers that call. We always pick the phone up — you have to professionally, but that’s it.”

Whether or not Payton is being truthful remains to be seen.

There have been multiple reports about wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, for example, and often when there’s smoke in the NFL, there’s fire.

So, will the Broncos make any moves before the NFL trade deadline? Here’s a quick look at ten players who might draw interest from other teams.

Does Chase Young want to remain with the Commanders?

Chase Young insists he’s still happy in Washington.

Washington Commanders defensive end Chase Young was born and raised in the DMV. Outside of his three-year stint at Ohio State, Young has always resided in the DMV. When Washington selected Young No. 2 overall in the 2020 NFL draft, he was immediately crowned as a face of the franchise.

Young won the NFL defensive rookie of the year award in 2020. The sky was the limit. Unfortunately, Young struggled in 2021 before a devasting knee injury that November. That injury kept Young on the sideline until Week 16 in the 2022 season.

So, in the offseason, the Commanders had a decision to make: Exercise the fifth-year option on Young’s rookie contract or not. They chose not to pick up the option, meaning Young would be an unrestricted free agent in 2024.

Essentially, the Commanders would decide between Young and Montez Sweat long term. With the NFL trade deadline fast approaching, Washington has taken calls on the availability of both players. The pair have combined for 11.5 sacks and are both playing well.

After Washington’s latest loss on Sunday to the Philadelphia Eagles, with trade rumors swirling around, he and Sweat — his close friend — Young was asked if he wanted to remain with the Commanders.

“For sure,” Young said when asked if he was still happy in Washington. “I love Washington.”

No one is happy with the current 3-5 record. And every player on the team knew this entire season was about evaluating the future under new owner Josh Harris.

Young is about to get new coaching, whether it is via a trade or when Washington makes a coaching change after the season.

Don’t expect big moves from Saints at NFL trade deadline

Never say never, but fans shouldn’t expect big moves from the Saints at Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline:

Any New Orleans Saints holding their breath for a blockbuster move ahead of Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline may need to reconsider their stance. It’s possible the Saints could surprise us and add a big name or ship someone out, but it’s not looking like they’ll be part of many high-stakes negotiations as the trade deadline approaches. NFL rules dictate that trade talks may not continue beyond 3 p.m. CT on Tuesday, Oct. 31.

So why won’t New Orleans be in the mix? For one thing, the Saints don’t have many contracts they could offload for salary cap relief, nor pending free agents other teams would want to prioritize. For another, these are the only 2024 draft picks New Orleans can barter with right now (compensatory draft picks can be traded, but not until they’ve been officially awarded in March):

  • Round 1
  • Round 2 (via Denver Broncos)
  • Round 5
  • Round 6
  • Round 6 (via Philadelphia Eagles)
  • Round 7 (via Denver Broncos)

Those top two selections should be off-limits, so that leaves the Saints with only a couple of late-round picks to put on the table. And that’s unlikely to land a difference-maker. Maybe the Saints could improve depth along the offensive line or add another receiver or tight end, but those are all marginal improvements.

One other point: while it may be fun to daydream about a trade for a top-shelf pass rusher like Danielle Hunter or Chase Young, those players would need expensive contract extensions. And the Saints just guaranteed a combined $61.8 million in extensions with Cameron Jordan and Carl Granderson this summer, so it’s very unlikely they would triple down with another veteran pass rusher like this. Maybe a situational player would make sense, but then they’d be taking snaps away from Isaiah Foskey and stymieing his development.

Obviously you’d never say never, but in this case it doesn’t look like the Saints are going to be big players at the trade deadline on Tuesday. We’ll check in on the rumor mill and see whether the Saints are being linked to anyone in the hours leading up to that deadline.

8 Commanders who should be available at the NFL trade deadline

Here are eight Commanders who could be possible trade candidates ahead of the NFL trade deadline.

On Saturday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Sunday’s game between the Washington Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles could dictate Washington’s ahead of Tuesday’s NFL trade.

Well, Washington lost and is now 3-5 on the season. So, if Schefter is correct, the Commanders are open for business.

The first question is, who is making these trades? We know head coach Ron Rivera sits atop the football flow chart as he hired his top executives, Marty Hurney, Martin Mayhew and Eric Stokes. Should this group be deciding Washington’s future?

Do you trust you’ll get the best return when the current regime probably isn’t keen on trading anyone away?

These are pertinent questions, but it’s time for the Commanders to look ahead. There are good players on this team, players who would help other teams. While Washington should be in sell mode, the Commanders shouldn’t give anyone away. It should all be about value.

Washington doesn’t want to trade Montez Sweat or Chase Young. But, it’s long been known the Commanders can’t keep both. So, trading one now, instead of waiting for a compensatory pick that may not come, they should make a move now.

Here are eight players who could be moved or receive interest around the league ahead of the trade deadline.

WATCH: Sam Howell finds Terry McLaurin for Commanders’ 1st touchdown

Terry McLaurin puts the Commanders on the board first.

The Washington Commanders entered Sunday’s game with a lot of rumors swirling about the immediate futures of some of their players. The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday, and Chase Young and Montez Sweat are most often mentioned as Washington players who could be available.

But, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN, what the Commanders do before the trade deadline could be determined by the result of Sunday’s Week 8 game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

How would the Commanders respond against the Eagles?

Washington had the ball first against Philadelphia, but that drive stalled at midfield. On their second possession, quarterback Sam Howell ended the drive with a 26-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Terry McLaurin to put the Commanders ahead 7-0.

Here it is:

Jay Glazer says Commanders will trade ‘at least’ one defensive lineman before deadline

Glazer expects one of Allen, Young, or Sweat to be moved.

It could be a busy week for the Washington Commanders. The NFL trade deadline is on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. ET. The rumors are swirling that the Commanders could be sellers ahead of the deadline. The players Washington has received the most inquiries on, at least that we know of, are defensive lineman Jonathan Allen, Chase Young and Montez Sweat.

According to NFL insider Jay Glazer of FOX Sports, at least one of Washington’s four star defensive linemen will be moved.

“So Washington, they have three defensive linemen,” Glazer said. “Jonathan Allen came out this past week and said he wants out of Washington, pretty much.”

First, let’s be clear with all due respect to Glazer: Allen never said that. He was frustrated, which he expressed after the game and the day after on his weekly appearance with the “Sports Junkies.”

“Look, there is rumors out there that the Chicago Bears have a deal for Chase Young; that is not true,” Glazer continued. “I don’t even think that one is going to happen. But I will tell you this: there’s a lot of teams that called Washington for all three of those players. At least one of those D-Linemen will get moved this week. And they’re looking Chase Young, a two-plus (2nd-round pick and more), three-plus (3rd-round pick and more), something along those lines. But, so somebody is going to get one of those players.”

Here’s the full exchange:

Glazer is one of the NFL’s more respected insiders, but Adam Schefter of ESPN said Saturday that Allen would not be moved.

The Commanders also received trade inquiries on Jonathan Allen after the defensive tackle’s postgame eruption after last Sunday’s loss to the New York Giants, but Washington said it is not willing to deal him and wouldn’t even have the conversation with other teams, according to sources.

The biggest question is, should Sunday’s outcome change Washington’s plans? If you’re clear this version of the Commanders isn’t a championship team, then you should look for value for any players on existing contracts.

Buckle up.
