Bettors hammered Broncos over Seahawks despite line movement and short odds

The public predicts a triumphant return to Seattle for Russell Wilson.

The Denver Broncos opened as 4.5-point favorites over the Seattle Seahawks at BetMGM for Monday night’s game. The move to the current 6.5-point spread was among the four largest jumps of Week 1 games. It’s safe to say the public feels good about Denver’s chances.

But just how good do they feel? Data from Tipico Sportsbook shows that 78% of bets against the spread were in favor of the Broncos, and Denver also received a whopping 91% of the money wagered against the spread. The moneyline numbers are even more staggering, with 96% of the bets and 91% of the money being placed on the Broncos despite very short -280 odds.

For that many people to buy the odds at that price, the confidence meter has to be on 10. And there’s plenty of reason to believe the Broncos can get it done in Russell Wilson’s return to Seattle.

The public is a little more split on the point total, though, as a small majority leans towards a low-scoring game. With the line at 43.5 points, 53% of bets and 55% of the handle are on the under.

NFL Week 1 public betting data: Pubic most undecided on result of Packers-Vikings

Week 1 public betting stats from Tipico.

It was a shaky open to the 2022 NFL season for the betting public, as most bets on the spread and total were incorrect.

Though the public correctly picked the Buffalo Bills moneyline at a 73% clip, 65% picked the Los Angeles Rams at +2.5 and 78% picked the over at 52.5 points. The game, of course, ended in a 21-point blowout in favor of the Bills and just 41 total points.

It’s only up from here. The first NFL Sunday of the season is finally here and the public has an opportunity to learn from its early mistakes. Here’s a look at how the public bet Sunday’s slate of Week 1 games, with data from Tipico.

Ranking the 10 NFL Week 1 home underdogs by most likely to win, from Bears (LOL) to Vikings

10 teams open the season as home underdogs, including the Super Bowl champs.

Out of 16 matchups on the slate for Week 1 of the NFL season, an incredible 10 games feature home teams considered underdogs by the sportsbooks.

Whether that was intentional scheduling by the NFL can’t be said for sure, but it does make for an interesting slate of openers with the potential for several upsets.

It also makes for a very difficult week of picks for bettors, because we know more than one of these home dogs is likely to find a way to win. But which team(s) will it be? I ranked all 10 of them by most likely to win, starting with No. 10.

Best bets for NFL season opener as Rams open title defense against Bills

The defending champs are home underdogs against Buffalo.

It’s not often a Super Bowl champion opens the next season as an underdog in the very first game. But it’s not often the champ is playing the team favored to win the next Super Bowl as the Buffalo Bills are in 2022.

That’s what the Los Angeles Rams are up against as they ready for the Bills on Thursday night. A 2.5-point spread isn’t exactly writing them off, but they have to come into the game fired up knowing people expect them to lose fresh off a championship.

Will it matter once the opening kickoff is in the air, though? Here are a few of my favorite bets for Thursday’s action.

September Sports Betting Calendar: NFL and NCAAF Week 1, WNBA Finals and US Open Finals

Football is back.

It’s the time of year you’ve all been waiting for, so you don’t need this calendar to tell you football is back. There are so many intriguing debuts and matchups to look forward to in this first month of the season, but I simplified the calendar to give a quick glimpse of the prime-time matchups.

In addition to the NFL, we’ve got Week 1 of college football action with a few Top 25 matchups on the slate, though rankings are sure to change by the time some of these matchups roll around.

Finally, the WNBA will crown a champion, as will the US Open. And the MLB enters it final stretch of the season before the playoffs begin. Here’s your betting calendar for September.
