Report: Chargers’ Uchenna Nwosu (shoulder) expected to miss a few weeks

Chargers linebacker Uchenna Nwosu sprained the AC joint in his shoulder.

Chargers linebacker Uchenna Nwosu went down with a shoulder injury in Sunday’s victory over the Jets and did not return to the game. Now, the team is preparing to be without him for a few games.

According to Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson, Nwosu sprained the AC joint in his shoulder and is expected to miss roughly three weeks. Wilson added that there was concern, it was much more serious.

The injury occurred on a sack by linebacker Denzel Perryman. Nwosu was spotted laying on the ground along with a Jets offensive lineman. When he got up, he was pointing to the chest/shoulder area.

Nwosu has served as edge defender Melvin Ingram’s backup. This season, he’s started four games, all while Ingram missed time with his perspective injury, where he amassed 23 tackles, eight quarterback hits, 3.5 sacks and three tackles for loss.

Saints QB Drew Brees placed on IR, won’t face Falcons this season

The Atlanta Falcons will have a great chance to win their third game in a row on Sunday when they travel to New Orleans to take on the Saints, who will be without quarterback Drew Brees

The Atlanta Falcons will have a great chance to win their third game in a row on Sunday when they travel to New Orleans to take on the Saints, who will be without quarterback Drew Brees (fractured ribs, punctured lung).

On Friday, the Saints placed Brees on the injured reserve list, meaning he will be out a minimum of three games, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter:

Not only will Atlanta get a big advantage in Week 11, but will get to face its most hated rival, and current division leader, twice without Brees. New Orleans also comes to town in Week 13, and the earliest he can return is Week 14.

In the meantime, it will be Taysom Hill, not Jameis Winston, taking the starter reps in Brees’ place. Despite having significantly more experience and passing ability than Hill, the Saints must not feel very comfortable with Winston out there.

Report: Saints to start QB Taysom Hill against Falcons in Week 11

Most assumed that it would be Jameis Winston taking Brees’ place, but it sounds like Sean Payton has other plans for Week 11.

The New Orleans Saints (7-2) have owned the NFC South this season, while the Atlanta Falcons (3-6) are still dealing with the aftermath of an 0-5 start. On Sunday, these two teams will meet for the first of two regular-season matchups, but the Saints will be without QB Drew Brees (punctured lung).

Most assumed that it would be Jameis Winston taking Brees’ place, but it sounds like Sean Payton has other plans for Week 11. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, New Orleans has been letting Taysom Hill take the starting QB reps in practice this week.

Hill hasn’t been involved much up to this point in the season. In nine games this year, he’s completed just four passes for 86 yards and rushed for 186 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Winston has thrown for 19,812 yards, 121 touchdowns and 88 interceptions over his career as the former No. 1 overall pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015. After leading the NFL in passing yards in 2019, Winston looked like a potential suitor to be Brees’ long-term replacement.

For now though, it appears that Hill will finally get his chance to prove he can be a starting quarterback in this league. Saints running back Alvin Kamara, who leads the team in rushing and receiving yards, didn’t practice on Thursday and his status for the game is still up in the air.

Notre Dame in NFL: Golden Tate injures knee in practice

Former Notre Dame wide receiver Golden Tate injured his knee late in practice Thursday with the New York Giants. Further details here.

Things haven’t gone according to plan for the New York Giants in 2020 as they’ve stumbled to just a 2-7 record and even in the lowly NFC East, have their work cut out to make a playoff spot.

We can discuss another time how pathetic it is that the fact they’re still “in it” at this point.

More bad news came the way of the Giants on Thursday though as wide receiver and 2009 Belitnikoff Award Winner at Notre Dame, Golden Tate, left practice with a knee injury.

There was no word on the extent of Tate’s injury but reports have him being further evaluated by the team’s medical staff as he was not available for the Zoom call through the Giants that he was previously scheduled to be a part of.

We will keep you posted on this developing story as will our friends at Giants Wire.

Tate has pulled down 22 receptions for 226 yards and two touchdowns this year while seeing action in seven games.

Uptick in injuries inevitable storyline for Steelers to start the 2020 season

With the limit in offseason training and padded contact, injuries will play a bigger role than it ever has in the 2020 season.

Pro athletes are physical specimens. They wouldn’t be where they are today if they didn’t stay in tiptop shape day-in and day-out. But the difference between in shape and in football shape is drastically different.

This is part of the reason the NFLPA fought so hard to cancel to the preseason; to have an ample ramp-up period for players to get acclimated to the physical demands of the game before the regular season. Since the entire offseason program was virtual, players saw canceling the preseason as the best chance to get into football shape and avoid injuries.

Still, only 14 padded practices with contact will be permitted between Aug. 17 to Sept. 6 — several days into training camp. In years past, padded practices began around the third day of camp. Once pads are on, players are fired up, and with it comes the intensity and pace of practice.

Without scrimmages and preseason, there will be no situation that will come close to mimicking regular-season game action and speed.

In 2019, 24 Steelers were injured throughout the season. Eight were placed on IR, 11 were questionable and 13 were out for one or more games. Injuries ranged from shoulders and backs to knees, feet and ankles. League-wide, ACL tears were suffered by 47 players, MCL tears occurred 109 times and lower-body, soft-tissue injuries (including hamstrings) came into play up to 610 times. All of this came with a traditional offseason — complete OTAs, minicamps and training camp.

Injuries are a significant concern during any season but none more so than in 2020. The Steelers (and all teams) work tirelessly to prevent them, but they’re something that, ultimately, cannot be avoided.

Mark Ingram, Mark Andrews both active vs. Titans

The Baltimore Ravens will have two key players in Mark Ingram and Mark Andrews in their game against the Titans during the NFL playoffs.

The extra week off for the Baltimore Ravens really helped them out as they face off against the Tennessee Titans in the NFL playoffs. While running back Mark Ingram and tight end Mark Andrews were both featured prominently on this week’s injury report, both players are active against the Titans.

Ingram had suffered a calf strain and Andrews suffered an ankle injury in Week 16 against the Cleveland Browns. Neither player suited up for Week 17’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers and with a first-round bye in the playoffs, both players were effectively given three full weeks of rest.

Baltimore is currently a heavy favorite over Tennessee in this one but having two key players on offense be active is a huge sigh of relief for the Ravens in their quest for Super Bowl LIV.

Check out the full inactive lists for the Ravens and Titans.

Baltimore Ravens inactives:

Multiple Steelers come away from Jets loss with injuries

The Steelers lost multiple starters on Sunday.

Sunday’s loss to the New York Jets was ugly in multiple levels for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Not only did the Steelers play terribly, but there was also a long list of injuries to come from the game.

After the game, head coach Mike Tomlin noted all the ones we saw during the game. Quarterback Mason Rudolph hurt his shoulder, James Conner suffered a thigh injury and center Maurkice Pouncey hurt his knee. But according to ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler, linebacker Bud Dupree also suffered a back injury and will have an MRI. Dupree was able to return after he hurt his back but it might be worse than first feared.

The big one here is Rudolph. Not that he inspires confidence but Rudolph played well before his injury against the Jets. If he cannot go this weekend, Pittsburgh will go into a must-win game with Devlin Hodges as the starter and Paxton Lynch as his backup. Lynch hasn’t played a meaningful game of football in two years.
