USC announces tunnel captain for homecoming game

Adoree Jackson will be USC’s tunnel captain for the Nebraska game. USC hopes the game’s outcome matches all the festivities surrounding the event.

On Friday, USC announced its tunnel captain for Saturday’s homecoming game against Nebraska. Serving in the role will be none other than former USC All-America cornerback Adoree’ Jackson. He played at USC from 2014-2016. As a junior in 2016, he became the second Trojan to win the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation’s top defensive back.

Jackson also saw action on offense and special teams during his time in Cardinal and Gold. In fact, he is the Trojans’ all-time leader in both kickoff return yards and punt return touchdowns.

One of Jackson’s most memorable moments at USC came during the 2014 Holiday Bowl against Nebraska, when he returned a kickoff 98 yards for the game’s first touchdown. The Trojans would go on to win the game 45-42.

Jackson was selected 18th in the 2017 NFL draft by the Tennessee Titans. He spent the first four seasons of his professional career there, before signing with the New York Giants in 2021, where he has been since.

Kickoff between USC and Nebraska is set for 1 p.m. local time in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Cornhuskers Wire offers insight on Nebraska’s new offensive play-caller

A Nebraska analyst explains why the Huskers and Matt Rhule had to change offensive play-callers before playing USC. There’s a lot going on behind the scenes.

Earlier this week, Nebraska football announced that it will make a major offensive change ahead of the matchup with USC on Saturday. Former Houston and West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen, who recently joined the Cornhuskers as an offensive consultant, will take over the team’s offensive play calling for the remainder of the season.

Holgorsen replaces Marcus Satterfield, who had served as Nebraska’s offensive coordinator since the start of the 2023 season. Satterfield will now solely serve as the team’s tight ends coach.

Following the announcement, Evan Bredeson of Cornhuskers Wire offered some perspective on the move.

“Matt Rhule had to make a change. I don’t know that any of us thought he would do something this drastic, especially considering how loyal he is to the guys on his staff. The fact that he made the change though is welcomed news. The offense had been regressing the last two years under Marcus Satterfield. Quarterback Dylan Raiola is playing worse now than he did at the start of the season, and if a staff change wasn’t made at the top of the offense, the chances of him hitting the portal was possible.

“With Holgorsen, I expect to see shorter passes designed to get the quarterback into rhythm early. Nebraska’s passing game had evolved to screen pass or deep shot. Nothing really in between. I also think we’ll see a lot more of the tight ends being involved in the passing game. Dana is known to have an affinity for using tight ends and the huskers actually have some depth at that position group and have not been utilizing it in any effective way this season.

“And they will run the football. Even though DH is an Air Raid guy, all of his top offenses always had a very good running game. Matt Rhule has said over and over again since arriving in Lincoln that he wants to be able to run the football consistently with power. The offense has simply not delivered on that front.”

USC takes on Nebraska at 1 p.m. Pacific Standard Time this Saturday.

Is Dylan Raiola playing on Saturday? Injury updates for the Husker quarterback

The Nebraska quarterback is dealing with an injury. Here are the latest updates.

Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule held his press conference on Thursday and indicated that the quarterback Dylan Raiola will be ready for Saturday’s contest against the USC Trojans.

Raiola has been dealing with a back injury throughout the season. He reaggravated it in the program’s last game against the UCLA Bruins. There were initial questions as to whether he would be ready to go for Saturday’s game. Now, we have an answer.

The quarterback has recorded 1,921 yards, ten touchdowns, and eight interceptions on the year. Last time out, he went 14-of-27, throwing for 177 yards, a touchdown, and an interception against the Bruins.

This is certainly a positive development for a Huskers program that needs a spark offensively. Raiola’s status and new offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen could be a recipe for success against a talented Trojans team.

Dylan Raiola injury update

Head coach Matt Rhule said the following when asked about the quarterback’s status for Saturday.

“Dylan will be ready to go and had a great week of practice. We got reps to all the guys. Heinrich (Haarberg) ready to go. Heinrich has had a really good two weeks… we’ll take four quarterbacks out there, but they’re all comfortable with what we do.”

Nebraska quarterback depth chart

Head coach Matt Rhule has told the press that the Huskers will travel to USC this weekend with four quarterbacks available.

  1. Dylan Raiola – #15
  2. Heinrich Haarberg – #10
  3. Daniel Kaelin – #12
  4. Jalyn Gramstad – #19

Huskers land commitment from 4-star edge defender Dawson Merritt

Dawson Merritt committed to the Huskers on Thursday.

Nebraska landed a commitment from class of 2025 edge defender Dawson Merritt on Thursday. The four-star recruit made the announcement on social media.

According to the On3 recruiting rankings, Merritt is the 85th overall player in the 2025 class, the 15th overall edge defender, and the third overall player in his class from the state of Kansas.

Nebraska had been recruiting him for quite a while. He first received an offer from the program on November 7. He has since visited Lincoln several times and will be in town for the Wisconsin Badgers game in the next couple of weeks. He also was able to come to town for the Colorado Buffaloes game back in September.

Merritt initially committed to Alabama on June 26. Nebraska football was initially a major player in his initial recruitment.

Merritt is having a solid season for Blue Valley High School this year. He currently has 58 total tackles in eight games, including 11 tackles for loss, per statistics from MaxPreps.

This commitment certainly adds a tremendous amount of talent to the 2025 recruiting class. The Huskers now have Christian Jones and Merritt as linebackers. This bodes well for the future. The class itself currently ranks 19th overall nationally per the On3 recruiting rankings. Merritt is now the highest-rated commitment in the class.

This is certainly a big recruiting victory, especially with Early Signing Day just a few weeks away. This coaching staff has been able to close the deal on multiple occasions with major recruits, and Thursday’s commitment was just an example.

USC football players need to perform like it’s 1972 against Nebraska

USC will wear 1972 uniforms against Nebraska. The goal for the Trojans is to play like the 1972 team, the best in school history. It’s time to raise the bar.

USC football players love the 1972 throwback uniforms the 2024 team will wear against Nebraska. Ryan Young of USC’s Rivals site gathered reactions from various Trojans about the cool retro threads:

“It was awesome. We’re so tradition-based, so being able to go back upon one of our original uniforms and being able to be a part of that being released, it’s really a blessing,” Robinson said. “I think we’re all pumped up. It’s a little bit of a change, and I think any spark is a good spark so maybe those uniforms will be good for us.”

It goes without saying that a uniform doesn’t make a football player perform better. USC needs to be able to leave this 2024 season knowing it can establish and sustain a much higher standard of play than what we have seen in the first nine games. This team had a much-needed week off after playing seven straight weeks (Sept. 21 through Nov. 2). If the Trojans can bring the hammer to Nebraska in a matchup of old-school college football powers, maybe there is hope the Trojans can turn the corner in 2025 and restore much of what they have lost since 2022’s 11-win season.

This is gut check moment. The 1972 USC team is the greatest in school history. Attaining greatness, not just 1972-level aesthetics, is the goal for USC football against Nebraska.

Huskers make Top Ten for class of 2026 all-purpose running back

Nebraska football made the top ten for a talented running back on Wednesday.

Nebraska football made the top 10 for 2026 running back Brian Bonner Jr. He made the announcement on social media on Wednesday afternoon.

Bonner is a four-star running back. According to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, he is the 11th overall running back in his class and the 13th overall player from the state of California.

He has several big-name schools in his top 10. Stanford, Washington, Georgia, Penn State, Tennessee, Utah, California, UCLA, and USC also made his list

Bonner is an all-purpose back and rushed for 500 yards on the ground for Valencia High School. He also showed his abilities as a receiving back, recording 457 yards, per his 247Sports profile.

The 2026 Nebraska football recruiting class is still being worked on, but it has talented players such as quarterback Dayton Raiola and wide receiver Dveyoun Bonwell-Witte.

The Huskers have done a solid job of establishing running back depth in future classes. Bonner would give Nebraska a running back with tremendous speed and vision and a pass-catching threat out of the backfield. He would fit a high-powered offense for the program moving forward.

Four Huskers receive East-West Shrine Bowl invites

Four Nebraska football players were selected to the East-West Shrine Bowl.

Four members of the Nebraska football program were invited to the East-West Shrine Bowl on Wednesday evening.

Defensive linemen Ty Robinson and Nash Hutmacher as well as wide receiver Isaiah Neyor, and defensive back Tommi Hill were invited to the game.

Robinson and Hutmacher have been key pieces for the defensive line this year. Robinson has recorded 23 tackles and five sacks on the season. Hutmacher has been able to produce as well. He has tallied 18 tackles and two sacks on the year.

Hill has emerged as a key piece of the secondary despite battling plantar fasciitis throughout the entire year. He has 19 tackles on the year and recorded a pick-six against the Colorado Buffaloes back in September.

Neyor has proven to be a veteran playmaker in a young Huskers offense. The Texas Longhorns transfer has 25 catches for 48 yards and five touchdowns. He is coming off a stellar game against the UCLA Bruins that saw him record four catches for 89 yards and a touchdown.

The Huskers have undoubtedly had strong play from seniors this year. Their legacy could continue to grow this season alone, especially if the Huskers make the elusive bowl game.

A look back at Nebraska’s last visit to the Los Angeles Coliseum

The USC-Nebraska game played in 2006 marked a Trojan quarterback’s home debut. Jayden Maiava makes his first home start for USC, 18 years later.

On Saturday, USC will host Nebraska at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. This will mark the first meeting between the Trojans and the Cornhuskers as Big Ten opponents. USC and Nebraska have met just five times prior, with the Trojans holding a record of 4-0-1 in those games.

Nebraska has visited the Coliseum just twice. The most recent of those visits came in September of 2006.

The days leading into the game were turbulent ones at USC. The week prior, the Trojans had gone into the heart of SEC country and opened the season with a 50-14 throttling of Arkansas. Head coach Pete Carroll’s team returned home to the Coliseum for their first home games of the post-Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush era. Both Leinart and Bush’s jerseys were officially retired prior to the game against the Cornhuskers.

During the lead-up to the game, however, reports began to surface that Bush had received improper benefits from an agent during his time at USC. As we all know, this would eventually lead to a mutli-year NCAA investigation that resulted in USC receiving incredibly harsh sanctions that would hold the program down for the better part of a decade.

As for the game itself, it was not particularly close. Although Nebraska scored first on an early field goal, the Trojans then went on a 21-0 run to largely put the game out of reach by the third quarter. When the clock hit zero, Pete Carroll’s team had a 28-10 victory to improve to 2-0 on the season.

The star of the show was Leinart’s replacement, new starting quarterback John David Booty. Making his second college start—and first in the Coliseum—Booty completed 25 of 36 passes for 257 yards and three touchdowns. Star wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett was also superb, catching 11 passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns.

Ironically enough, this Saturday’s matchup will also feature a USC quarterback making his first start in the Coliseum. The Trojans are hoping that Jayden Maiava can channel a little Booty magic of yesteryear and lead the team to a victory over Nebraska.

Huskers hosting Dawson Merritt for Wisconsin Badgers game

Dawson Merritt is coming back to Lincoln on November 23.

Class of 2025 four-star edge defender Dawson Merritt will be in Lincoln for the Wisconsin Badgers game later this month.

Several On3 experts projected Merritt to go to Nebraska on Tuesday. He originally committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide at the end of June. Despite the commitment, Nebraska has steadily been involved in his recruitment. Now, it appears that they are in a position to land him.

This would be the sixth blue-chip commitment for the 2025 class, which is headlined by linebacker Christian Jones. Merritt and Jones would give the program a solid combination on the defensive side of the ball.

The 2025 class is shaping up nicely. The class ranks 24th overall nationally per the On3 recruiting rankings.

Merritt’s recruitment to Nebraska seems to be gaining momentum. The announcement of the visit and the predictions of a potential commitment are certainly positive developments for the Huskers.
