The Nuggets are finally playing defense, and that makes them a real threat in the West

Denver’s win over Memphis was a statement game.

Welcome to Layup Lines, our basketball newsletter where we’ll prep you for a tip-off of tonight’s action, from what to watch to bets to make. Subscribe here to get it delivered to your inbox every afternoon.

Paced by MVP Nikola Jokic’s sixth triple-double of the season, the Denver Nuggets beat the first-place Memphis Grizzlies by 14 points on Tuesday.

Now, the Nuggets are in first place.

The win was their fifth in the last six games, pulling them into a tie with Memphis at the top of the Western Conference at 19-11. Yet, if you take a look around different sportsbooks, Denver’s title odds still trail at least three other teams in the West. Those teams are the Warriors, Suns and Clippers. Some still have the Grizzlies ahead of Denver too.

Golden State, the only of those teams with a losing record, is obviously receiving the benefit of doubt as the defending champion. But the other three teams all have something in common that Denver doesn’t, and that’s a top-10 defensive rating. The Nuggets are the NBA’s 24th ranked defense. Which brings us back to Tuesday’s game.

If the Nuggets want to be considered a real title contender, they have to be better on defense, and things were trending in the right direction even before they played Memphis. Denver has a top-10 defensive rating in its last five games, and Tuesday only furthered that trend. The Nuggets held Memphis to a season-low 91 points on 44% shooting, including just 5-of-26 (19%) from three. Head coach Mike Malone said “it’s just one game,” but he was proud of how physical his team played.

He’s right. It is just one game, so we can’t say this is who they are now. But if they want to contend for a championship, it’s who they’ll have to become. Because their offense is elite, but you can’t win if you can’t get stops.

The Tip-Off

Some NBA goodness from around the USA TODAY Sports network.

The sale of the Phoenix Suns appears to finally be coming to a close, with 42-year-old billionaire Mat Ishbia reportedly set to purchase a majority stake in the team for a record $4 billion.

The NBA’s newest governor will be familiar to some sports fans. He was a part of Tom Izzo’s Michigan State teams that reached the Final Four each year from 1999-2001 and won a national title in 2000.

That was just one of 3 things to know about Ishbia, as written by my colleague Blake Schuster.

“MSU can also thank him for helping the Spartans hire Mel Tuckers the football team’s head coach.

According to Forbes, Ishbia pledged $32 million towards the Spartans in 2021. A few months earlier, he committed $14 million towards the 10-year, $95 million contract given to Tucker following Mark Dantonio’s retirement.

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

Milwaukee Bucks (+115) at Cleveland Cavaliers (-2.5, -135), O/U 216.5, 7 PM ET

The Cavs host the Bucks on Wednesday night in another battle of giants in their respective conference. Both teams are 7-3 in their last 10 games, and they’re both getting it done on the defensive end. Cleveland has turned that effort up another notch in its last four games, allowing an average of just 100 points. Add in their 15-2 record at home, and I like the Cavs to cover this small spread.

Shootaround

— Deandre Ayton and Mikal Bridges were hilariously trolled by Bradley Beal during a little disagreement

— Jimmy Butler missed the Heat’s last game with a stomach bug after eating…crickets?

— Charles Barkley had so much fake snow dumped on him that it ruined his coffee

— The Jeremy Sochan-Dennis Rodman comparisons continue

2022-23 NBA title odds updated after the draft

There was a little movement.

The NBA is the rare league where one player can dramatically shift the title expectations of an entire franchise in a single offseason. It doesn’t often happen as fast with the new players entering via draft, but the hope is that they expedite the process. Which is why the lottery is so important.

Whether Paolo Banchero or Jaden Ivey, or any of the other top picks can be that player remains to be seen. But it’s never too early to take a look at championship odds to see what the oddsmakers think.

Here’s a look at where each team stands after the draft, with odds from Tipico Sportsbook.

2022-23 NBA Championship Odds

Below are the teams that have seen their odds change from just a week ago after the NBA Finals, most of which are minimal and not likely reflections of the draft. For example, the Spurs’ odds actually grew longer despite three first-round picks, all of which received a grade of A- or better in For The Win’s draft tracker. That movement is likely more a reaction to Dejounte Murray trade rumors than anything.

  • Warriors odds grew from +480
  • Nets odds grew from +650
  • Clippers odds shortened from +700
  • Bucks odds shortened from +750
  • Cavs odds shortened from +10000
  • Spurs odds grew from +20000
  • Pacers odds grew from +30000

Updated 2022 NBA championship odds, picks and predictions

Looking at the odds to win the 2021-22 NBA championship, with NBA futures picks, predictions and best bets.

The NBA All-Star break has arrived and we have a pretty good picture of the championship landscape as teams prepare for the final 20-plus games left on the regular-season schedule. Below, we look at the updated 2021-22 NBA championship odds and lines, and make our expert NBA picks, predictions and bets.

The Phoenix Suns lead the Western Conference by 6.5 games and are the best team in the NBA at the break. Three teams in the Western Conference have better records than the top teams in the Eastern Conference, but the back end of the playoff race in the East is better than things look in the West.

Things were shaken up in the East with a big trade involving SG James Harden (to the Philadelphia 76ers) and PG Ben Simmons (to the Brooklyn Nets). The deal appears to make both teams better, and the conference still has the defending champion Milwaukee Bucks.

Who will survive the stretch run and push through the postseason to be this year’s NBA champions?

2022 NBA championships picks and predictions

Phoenix Suns (+425)

Bet $100 to win $425

After taking the first two games of the NBA Finals at home, the Suns were two games away from a title last season, but the Bucks won the final four games of the series. The Suns were on the cusp as a surprise team in the regular season and in the playoffs. They have continued their roll this season, sitting at 48-10. They are bigger and deeper this season. They struggle when C Deandre Ayton gets into foul trouble, but with C JaVale McGee and C Bismack Biyombo behind him, Phoenix is two and three deep at almost every position.

Golden State Warriors (+480)

Bet $100 to win $480

There are some concerns about PF Draymond Green’s back. The main thing for the Warriors is getting healthy. They own the second-best record in the league and have championship experience. PG Stephen Curry and SG Klay Thompson make their offensive attack deadly. If Green comes back and C James Wiseman, too, they have the size, strength, firepower and experience to win it all.

Philadelphia 76ers (+700)

Bet $100 to win $700

The addition of Harden gives the 76ers one of the best scorers and playmakers in the league. Adding him with MVP candidate C Joel Embiid, who is playing like the best big man in the league, make the 76ers a real threat to win it all. A motivated Harden can carry a team and he will make things even easier for Embiid.

2022 NBA championships picks – Long shot

Denver Nuggets (+3000)

Bet $100 to win $3,000

Look to the Nuggets for a long shot worth sprinkling a little something on. However, their playoff fate will be determined by whether PG Jamal Murray returns to form by the postseason as he comes back from a torn ACL, and whether SF Michael Porter Jr. can also get healthy before the end of the regular season. If they can stay in the playoff race and get healthy, they could be a surprise team.

2022 NBA championship odds – Pretenders

  • Cleveland Cavaliers (35-23) +4000
  • Dallas Mavericks (35-24) +4000
  • Los Angeles Clippers (30-31) +6000 ⬇️ from +1500
  • Toronto Raptors (32-25) +7000
  • Atlanta Hawks (28-30) +8000
  • Minnesota Timberwolves (31-28) +9000
  • Charlotte Hornets (29-31) +10000
  • New York Knicks (25-34) +30000
  • New Orleans Pelicans (23-36) +30000
  • Portland Trail Blazers (25-34) +30000
  • Sacramento Kings (22-38) +40000

WATCH: Odds On 2022 NBA Championship, Bucks’ Chances To Repeat

ThePostGame looks at circumstances to consider about Milwaukee’s chance at winning the NBA title again in 2021-2022.

The Milwaukee Bucks were crowned the 2020-21 NBA champions thanks to an NBA Finals MVP-earning performance from star PF Giannis Antetokounmpo in their Game 6 victory over the Phoenix Suns. Milwaukee is still celebrating its hard-earned victory, but who is the favorite to win it all in 2022?

Antetokounmpo scored 50 points in the biggest game of his young career, leading the team that drafted him to its first NBA title in 50 years.

Take a look at how Antetokounmpo’s age compares to other recent NBA Finals MVPs, the contract status of the Bucks’ stars and the odds of Milwaukee winning back-to-back championships. Check BetMGM for the most updated odds.

WATCH: Devin Booker odds and bets for NBA Finals Game 6

ThePostGame sizes up prop bets on Phoenix Suns star Devin Booker ahead of Game 6 of the NBA Finals against the Milwaukee Bucks.

Phoenix Suns star SG Devin Booker has reached the 40-point mark four times during the playoffs this year, and his team figures to need another big game from him to stay alive in the NBA Finals. Booker shook off a bad shooting effort in Game 3 when he had just 10 points by averaging 41 points per game in the next two.

Can he sustain his surge with the Suns facing elimination in Milwaukee? Consider these bets on Booker’s production for Game 6 against the Bucks. Check BetMGM for the most updated odds.

ThePostGame sizes up prop bets on Phoenix Suns PG Chris Paul ahead of Game 5 of the NBA Finals against the Milwaukee Bucks.

Phoenix Suns star PG Chris Paul would be the second-oldest player at 36 to win the NBA Finals MVP award, behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38). But Paul will need a strong finish to the series against Milwaukee. After leading the Suns with 32 points in Game 1, Paul has lost steam offensively.

Can he get back on the beam? Consider these bets on Paul’s production for Game 5 against the Bucks. Check BetMGM for the most updated odds.

WATCH: Devin Booker odds and bets for NBA Finals Game 4

ThePostGame sizes up prop bets on Phoenix Suns SG Devin Booker ahead of Game 4 of the NBA Finals against the Milwaukee Bucks.

Phoenix Suns SG Devin Booker scored his playoff-low 10 points in Game 3 of the NBA Finals, and that was a major factor in Milwaukee blowing out Phoenix by 20. Heading into Game 4, the good news for the Suns is that after Booker had his worst scoring game of the regular season, he responded with an offensive outburst. Managing just eight points in an early-season game against New Orleans, Booker then reeled off seven consecutive efforts of at least 22.

Additionally, after his previous low in the playoffs of 15 points in the Clippers series, Booker proceeded to average 27.2 in the next five games. Consider these bets on Booker’s output for Game 4 against the Bucks. Check BetMGM for the most updated odds.

NBA Champion Betting Odds: Who do the oddsmakers like to win it all?

Breaking down the odds surrounding the team most likely to win the 2019-20 NBA Championship.

[jwplayer gWkUP5ky]

After a long pause in action, the NBA returns July 30th to close out their 2019-20 season. With all eyes on the NBA playoffs, which team is the favorite to win in the eyes of the oddsmakers at BetMGM sportsbook?

Three teams, per the oddsmakers, stand out among the pack with the shortest odds of winning this season’s NBA Championship. The Los Angeles Lakers lead the way and are the favorite among the postseason teams to be this year’s champion; they sit with the lowest odds at +250. But the Lake Show isn’t considered as a dominating favorite, as the Lakers are closely followed by the Milwaukee Bucks at +280 and the Los Angeles Clippers at +325.

New to the world of sports betting? At +250, the Lakers have an implied 28.57% chance of winning it all, or 5/2 in fractional odds. A $100 wager at +250 returns a $250 profit should they win the championship this season. The Bucks (26.32% at +280) and Clippers (23.53% at +325) round out the top three. From there, the odds get longer and quickly: The Houston Rockets (+1200 – bet $100, win $1,200) have implied odds of just 7.69% while the Boston Celtics (+1800 – bet $100, win $1,800) sit at 5.26%.

Bet on these NBA teams to reach the 2019-20 NBA Finals

Predicting the exact matchup of the 2019-20 NBA Finals with our picks and best bets.

The NBA restart is almost here and that means it’s time to look ahead to the NBA Finals. Below, we make our best bets for potential 2019-20 NBA Finals matchups with all odds courtesy of BetMGM.

2019-20 NBA Finals matchup picks

Odds provided by BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Tuesday, July 21, at 9:45 a.m. ET.

Milwaukee Bucks – Los Angeles Lakers (+270)

The odds-on favorite matchup for the 2019-2020 NBA Finals features the Bucks and Lakers. Both teams currently are the No. 1 seeds in their respective conference and have talent galore on their rosters.

Each side has a potential MVP candidate from the regular season in Bucks PF Giannis Antetokounmpo and Lakers SF LeBron James. Each player has shown they can win multiple playoff series singlehandedly, but both rosters are so deep and talented that they won’t need to.

While this matchup does feel likely, there just isn’t a ton of value here. Don’t be afraid to bet on the Bucks and Lakers to reach the finals if you believe they can win their conferences.

Looking to place an NBA futures bet? Get some action on it at BetMGM. Bet Now!

Milwaukee Bucks – Los Angeles Clippers (+340)

The next most likely NBA Finals matchup once again involves the Bucks coming out of the Eastern Conference. This time, it’s the Los Angeles Clippers making it out of the West. With the Clippers beating the Lakers twice in the regular season and given their talent and depth, it’s not hard to see them advancing to the NBA Finals.

The Clippers have the length and shooting to match up with anyone in the Western Conference, including the Lakers. With the Lakers missing two key guards in Rajon Rondo and Avery Bradley, the Clippers feel like a better bet to get through the Western Conference gauntlet. Given the value, this is a much better bet than Bucks-Lakers.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Bucks-Clippers matchup would return a profit of $34. The same bet on the Bucks and Lakers to meet in the NBA Finals would return a profit of just $27.

Philadelphia 76ers – Los Angeles Clippers (+2800)

If you are looking for a bet with some better value, consider swapping out the Bucks for the 76ers in the Eastern Conference. In this case, the 76ers-Clippers matchup would return $280 on a $10 bet and that feels like a steal considering the talent on both sides.

While the Sixers have been up and down this season, their talent is undeniable. Nobody in the conference can match up with C Joel Embiid when he is at his peak, and with the 76ers length on defense, they could give Antetokounmpo some problems.

It wouldn’t be all that surprising if the 76ers get on a run and advance to the NBA Finals. Pairing them with the Clippers would not only be a fun matchup, but it could return value to bettors, as well.
