Keegan Murray to earn first NBA start against Memphis Grizzlies

Former Iowa star Keegan Murray is set to make his first official NBA start for the Sacramento Kings tonight against the Memphis Grizzlies.

Hawkeye Insider David Eickholt was flabbergasted during Keegan Murray’s NBA debut, as I’m sure we all were. Murray looked like a seventh-year veteran, and looked as though he transitioned his game from college without a hitch.

One game had not been in the books officially yet, but Eickholt had seen enough as he emphatically informed Twitter.

“Keegan Murray being brought off the bench is a joke,” Eickholt tweeted, most likely in a huff while vigorously shaking his head.

After just two games, the Sacramento Kings agree. Head coach Mike Brown announced today that Keegan Murray will start Sacramento’s home game against the Grizzlies on Thursday night. The Kings’ fan base responded with glee in the comments at the prospect of Murray finally getting his shot, some even happier at the idea of KZ Okpala seeing the bench (ouch.)

This is pretty much just a formality at this point. Keegan Murray has essentially been starting for the Kings over the past two games, actually leading Sacramento in minutes per game with 35.5 this season. I don’t know why, but for us sports fans it means a lot more when they are announced as a starter and are out there for the opening tip rather than three minutes later.

It is a good sign that the Kings realize what’s clearly in front of their eyes with Murray. He doesn’t really need to be hand-held to start his NBA career. While many knocked his age coming out of the 2022 NBA draft, it has certainly helped with his quick transition to the league.

Though a small sample size, Murray looks exactly like the player many hoped he’d be for the Kings. He’s shot the ball really well and has managed to integrate himself to the offense pretty seamlessly. We’ll see if being out there for the opening tip makes any difference to Keegan Murray’s game.

WATCH: Former Longhorn Jericho Sims throws down a ridiculous dunk during NBA summer league

Jericho Sims jumped out of the gym for this jam!

Stop me if you haven’t heard this before, but Jericho Sims is a freak of nature.

The New York Knicks rookie has been making plays all summer league long, and is showing why he deserves a spot in the NBA. In five games, which he has all started, Sims is averaging 8 points per game on 81% shooting, 8 rebounds, and one block per game.

Sims has always been a very productive player, during his time at Texas he averaged 9.2 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.1 blocked shots in 26 games last season. He was also named to the All-Big 12 Tournament Team after helping the Longhorns win to their first-ever postseason championship.

The scouting report on Sims have always highlighted his athleticism, and that has been on display in Las Vegas. The rest of the world was exposed to his athleticism at the NBA combine, where he recorded a 44.5-inch max vertical jump, which was second all-time.

Let’s just say he showed off that vertical in a live game, which left the basketball world and social media in awe.

It’s truly impressive how high he got up to grab that alley-oop, as you can see his hands go over the square on the backboard. Sims is currently on a two-way deal, but his athleticism on both ends of the court, along with his tenacious effort, will have him as a full-time member of the Knicks NBA roster in no time.
