The Kansas City Chiefs are one week closer to the start of the 2023 season. They will likely enter a period of relative hibernation until the team’s organized team activities begin later this month. Still, Kansas City will remain active in their effort to better the bottom end of their roster over the coming months in preparation for training camp and the preseason, when they will look to begin their Super Bowl title defense.

Jalen Rose broke into tears while honoring his mother on NBA Countdown

Wow.

It feels like we’ve all known Jalen Rose, the flashiest member of the Fab Five, for so long now. He was such a graceful player, and has been a thoughtful analyst of the game for more than a decade now.

Part of what makes his story resonate is that his first name — a combination of James, for his father, and Leonard, for the man who drove his mother to the hospital — had such an interesting story and became so popular.

This is the first Mother’s Day Jalen had to spend without his mother Jeanne, who created the name and guided her son to a life of prominence that made it spread.

He broke into tears as he discussed how much he misses her.

“We fell in love with basketball together. My father played in the league and to not know him… She was like, ‘You’re going to make it, you’re going to get us out the hood, I promise you.’ And I was like ‘I’m going to do it, Ma.’ And I did it. We did it.”

Jimmy Walker, the No. 1 pick in the 1967 NBA draft, was Rose’s biological father but the two never met; Walker died of cancer in 2007.

Rose had tweeted earlier this year about his mother’s battle with cancer. She died in early February.

Here’s more on how she come up with name Jalen.

The 5 most memorable Mother’s Day moments in sports

From Dallas Braden’s perfect game to a miraculous comeback by the Red Sox.

Mother’s Day is usually a busy time in the sports calendar. The MLB season is in full swing and the NBA and NHL playoffs are starting to heat up. That is obviously not the case this year sadly, but the empty sports calendar does give us some time to look back at memorable Mother’s Day moments.

We’ve picked out five memorable ones from recent history. Now, not all of these moments are directly related to mothers — some are just great moments that happened to take place on the holiday — but the moments that did got a boost in the rankings.

5. Red Sox erase five-run deficit in the ninth inning, 2007

Down to their final two outs in the ninth inning, the Red Sox led a furious comeback to beat the Orioles in what’s now known as the Mother’s Day Miracle. Julio Lugo’s bouncing ground ball forced a throwing error that brought in the game-winning run and capped off the miraculous comeback.

4. Jamal Mashburn scores 31 with mom sitting court-side, 2001

With the Hornets trailing the Bucks 2-1 in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, Mashburn poured in 31 points in a series-tying, 85-78 win. What made the performance so special? Mashburn’s mother Helen, who had been battling colon cancer all season, was in attendance. The Hornets would go on to lose the series, but a year later Helen learned she was cancer free.

3. Kawhi Leonard hits Game 7 buzzer-beater vs. 76ers, 2019

Leonard gave all of Toronto a Mother’s Day present to remember when he propelled the Raptors to their second Eastern Conference Finals appearance with a ridiculous buzzer-beater in Game 7 of their series against the 76ers. The Raptors would go on to win the NBA Finals in six games.

2. Martin St. Louis scores goal in Rangers playoff win, 2014

Just days after his mother had passed away, St. Louis scored the opening goal in a pivotal playoff matchup with the Penguins. The Rangers would go on to win the game and the series before falling in the Stanley Cup Finals.

1. Dallas Braden pitches perfect game, 2010

Braden, whose mother had died after a bout with cancer while he was in high school, had invited his grandmother to watch him pitch on Mother’s Day. He’d go on to pitch the 19th perfect game in MLB history before sharing a touching moment with his grandmother.

One of the biggest athletes on the planet liked Tom Brady’s Mother’s Day post on Instagram

Tom Brady took to Instagram to post a touching message for Mother’s Day, and one of the most famous athletes in the world was a fan of it.

It’s Mother’s Day today, and while people may not be able to go out and celebrate in the traditional way this year, there are still plenty of ways to show love to the moms in our lives.

Bucs QB Tom Brady took to Instagram to post the below message to both his wife, Gisele Bundchen, and his mother. Take a look.

The pictures Brady posted are great, especially the last one with him in baggy golf pants.

And, while many people liked the post, perhaps the biggest like came from one of the biggest athletes on the planet. Take a look at who replied to Brady’s touching message.

It’s nice to have famous friends, I guess.
