Minnesota vs Purdue Game Preview

Why Purdue Will Win

Purdue is going to bring the run defense.

It got hammered a bit by Florida Atlantic in the 28-26 win, but overall the defense is getting the job done – at least until the final moments against Penn State and Syracuse.

Minnesota for good and for bad has yet to be tested. It hasn’t faced any semblance of adversity, and Purdue has been through three tight games – it’s used to dealing with pressure.

The Boilermaker offensive line is playing well, it’s great in pass protection, and last week there was a little bit of a running game to go along with the three touchdown passes.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Minnesota Will Win

How healthy is Aidan O’Connell?

The Purdue starting quarterback wasn’t able to go against Florida Atlantic, and he’s questionable at best for this – the team isn’t saying what the injury is. Austin Burton wasn’t bad against FAU, but the passing game didn’t work nearly as well.

On the other side, the Minnesota offense has been a machine. It ended the Michigan State game before it could get started with a great balance, an efficient passing day – Tanner Morgan hit 23-of-26 passes and three scores – and with everything working well.

It was the first good team the Gophers have faced, and they rolled with ease. They’re No. 1 in the nation in third down conversions. No. 1 in third down D, No. 1 in time of possession, No. 1 in total defense, and No. 3 in total offense …

What’s Going To Happen

Minnesota is playing really, really well.

Purdue struggled too much against Florida Atlantic, but the passing game will click against the Gophers. Michigan State was able to throw relatively well against the Minnesota D, but it didn’t matter. There wasn’t any Spartan ground game, and Purdue won’t be able to run, either.

Minnesota will need a quarter to get rolling, and then the offensive balance will kick in. It won’t be the breeze the first four games were, but there’s no complaining about 5-0.

Minnesota vs Purdue Game Preview

Why Minnesota Will Win

Which Minnesota team will show up?

Is it the one that pounded away in a shockingly dominant 30-0 win at Colorado, or is it the one that couldn’t put an offensive drive together in the brutal 14-10 loss to Bowling Green?

Either way, the Gophers have figured out one key thing – their run defense is absolutely stellar.

It held the Buffs to -19 net rushing yards and Bowling Green only gained 22, all while the Gophers were able to run well enough on their own to at least mask a gigantic issue – we’ll get to that in a second.

Okay, okay, Purdue doesn’t run so a great run D isn’t the be all end all in this, but start with assuming Minnesota will allow about 50 rushing yards and …

Week 5 College Football Expert Picks

Why Purdue Will Win

Purdue will throw and throw some more.

The Boilermaker passing game isn’t a dominant force – stalled a little too easily in the 13-9 win over Illinois – but it’s doing a nice job of controlling the clock and the tempo of games. Minnesota all but lives on time of possession, and Purdue might be able to take that away.

Oh, and Minnesota really, really can’t get the passing game going.

Tanner Morgan is a veteran quarterback who was among the most efficient passers in America two years ago, and he completed 5-of-13 passes for 59 yards with two picks against Bowling Green.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Purdue is known for its offense, but the defense is playing great.

The win over Oregon State is looking much, much better now after the Beavers rolled USC, the close battle against Notre Dame isn’t anything to be ashamed of, and overall the D has allowed just 57 points in four games.

There’s that, and there’s the anger factor after Purdue gagged/was robbed in last year’s game – a questionable pass interference call was the big hubbub in the 34-31 loss.

Be floored if this is any sort of a shootout.

Minnesota is just flaky enough to pull a brilliant game out of its Gopher hole and turn its season right back around, but the Purdue run defense is playing just well enough to hold on.

Why Minnesota Will Win

Purdue just doesn’t force enough mistakes.

It’s able to shot well and rebound everything, but it would everything and everyone and it just doesn’t come up with enough big defensive plays.

Minnesota – for all of its problems lately – isn’t screwing up, and it’s No. 1 in the nation in free throws made and third in free throw attempts.

The game plan is simple. Let Purdue be Purdue and get fouled, get to the line, and keep hitting the free throws. On the other side …

Why Purdue Will Win

Let Minnesota shoot.

The Gophers are miserable from three, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t like to take a whole lot of shots from the outside. They’ll keep firing, and they’ll keep missing, and that’s where Purdue comes in.

Minnesota is terrific on the boards, but Purdue is even better. There will be too many one-and-dones for the Gophers, and there will be too many fouls of their own as they try to get physical in this.

The Gophers are a mortal lock to get whacked by at least five in rebounding margin.

What’s Going To Happen

Both teams will foul a whole lot, because that’s what they do.

Purdue will hit from the inside, Minnesota will hit from the three throw line, and other one will do much of anything from the outside.

It’ll be a rough and tumble game, but it should be a whole lot of fun in a pounding sort of way. Purdue’s success on the boards will be the difference.
