Kansas hires Mike DeBord as offensive coordinator

Kansas hires Mike DeBord as offensive coordinator.

Mike DeBord has been hired as Kansas’ offensive coordinator.

DeBord served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Vols from 2015-16.

Kansas head coach Les Miles was pursuing a veteran offensive coordinator with a proven track record in the NFL and Power Five ranks for his staff.

“We are adding a coach with a wealth of experience in Mike,” Miles said in a press release. “He has squared off with just about every defensive scheme in the book, and has worked within and led several offensive systems.

“In addition to the qualities he brings as a football coach, he is a man of high character, and will be an outstanding addition to our program as we continue to instill the culture we want in place.”

Miles and DeBord coached alongside each other from 1993-94 at Michigan.

“I have had the honor of working alongside Mike before, as have some of the best coaches in college football and the NFL,” Miles said. “He makes his fellow coaches better, and will have an instant impact on the Jayhawks.”

DeBord previously joined the show “Tennessee Two-A-Days” to discuss his career and coaching at Tennessee.

Michigan analyst leaving for Big 12 offensive coordinator job

After coming and going from Ann Arbor, Michigan football analyst Mike DeBord lands a new gig as Kansas’ offensive coordinator.

The life of an analyst — that is, behind the scenes and off-field personnel — is that of one with quick change. They’re around for a moment and then they’re gone.

Last offseason, Michigan football had brought aboard one of its former offensive coordinators who has traversed the college football landscape to be an offensive analyst in Mike DeBord. DeBoard was the offensive line coach then offensive coordinator between the years of 1993-99 before becoming the head coach at Central Michigan. When that didn’t work out, he returned as the special teams coach and then OC again from 2004-07 before spending the next five years in the NFL. He then went to Tennessee and Indiana before spending a season with the defunct AAF’s San Diego Fleet. Then had another year in Ann Arbor as the offensive analyst.

Now he’s on the move once again, hired by former Michigan player/assistant Les Miles to be Kansas’ new offensive coordinator.

With Michigan retooling its attack on both sides of the ball, such attrition is expected, even if DeBord was a behind-the-scenes type this past season.

Longtime Michigan assistant rejoins program as analyst

The longtime Wolverines assistant is back in Ann Arbor in an off-the-field coaching role.

It seems that he just can’t stay away from Ann Arbor.

Mike DeBord has had a lot of stops in his coaching career, but more often than not, he’s ended up at Michigan.

The Indiana native who played for Manchester College got his start with the Wolverines in 1993, when he took over as the offensive line coach. He maintained that position until 1997 when he became the offensive coordinator for a Michigan team that went on to win the national championship. He left his post in 2000, when he went on to become Central Michigan’s head coach.

[lawrence-related id=22053,22044]

But he returned in 2004, spending two years as the special teams coordinator and recruiting coordinator before resuming his offensive coordinator responsibilities in 2006-07. When Lloyd Carr retired, DeBord headed to the NFL, where he had various roles with the Seattle Seahawks and Chicago Bears.

In 2013, DeBord returned to Michigan, but this time serving under Dave Brandon in the athletic department and not in a coaching role. He left, once again, this time to become the offensive coordinator for Tennessee under Butch Jones for two seasons. The next two, he returned to his native Indiana as Tom Allen’s offensive coordinator, before coordinating the offense for the short-lived AAF San Diego Fleet.

But now, he’s back in Ann Arbor, serving as an offensive analyst for the Wolverines.

Analysts aren’t on-field coaches and don’t participate in recruiting. And while DeBord is sometimes maligned for his seemingly archaic schemes as an offensive coordinator, he showed ingenuity in his time down in Bloomington.
