Panthers sign OL Marquel Harrell, release WR Micah Simon

The Panthers keep testing the market for that offensive line depth they’ve desperately needed.

Carolina Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer, so far, says what he means and means what he says.

Yesterday, he said the team was monitoring the open market for offensive line depth. And today, he meant it.

On Thursday morning, the Panthers announced the signing of offensive lineman Marquel Harrell. Harrell, 6-foot-3 and 309 pounds, most recently suited up with the Las Vegas Raiders for minicamp and OTAs this summer.

The Auburn University product broke into the league as an undrafted free agent a year ago, having signed on with the Buffalo Bills following five seasons as a Tiger. He was released by Buffalo earlier this year after spending the final five games of the season on the team’s practice squad.

To maneuver back to the 85-man roster limit in making room for Harrell, the Panthers released wide receiver Micah Simon. The speedy wideout out of Brigham Young University first inked himself into Carolina back in March.

The Panthers added another burner today, signing former BYU wide receiver Micah Simon. Simon (6-foot-1, 195 pounds) went undrafted last year but participated in his school’s recent pro day along with QB prospect Zach Wilson.

Simon turned some heads by running a 4.34 40-yard dash. At least it was enough to catch the attention of general manager Scott Fitterer.

Simon totaled 1,163 yards and seven touchdowns from scrimmage in 36 games with the Cougars.

It will be interesting to see where he lands Carolina’s depth chart. The exit of WR3 Curtis Samuel opens up a lot of opportunities for guys like him and former Seahawks wideout David Moore, who just signed a two-year deal.

The Carolina Panthers continue adding to their receiving corps.

According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the Panthers signed former BYU receiver Micah Simon.

Simon was unable to participate in BYU’s pro day in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic obliterated that chance. However, he was able to participate in BYU’s 2021 pro day with former quarterback Zach Wilson. Simon caught passes from the top quarterback prospect and also posted a reported 4.34 40-yard dash time.

The 6-1, 195-pound receiver caught 90 passes for 1,109 yards and five touchdowns in his four seasons with the Cougars. Simon even rushed 11 times for 54 yards and two touchdowns.

Simon’s best season with BYU was in 2019 when he caught 51 passes for 616 yards and two touchdowns in 13 games. The former Dallas (Texas) Bishop Dunne product also rushed five times for 47 yards and two touchdowns.
