Breaking: Matthew Stafford traded to Los Angeles Rams for Jared Goff, three future picks

The Lions are trading Matthew Stafford to the Rams for Jared Goff and three future picks, taking Washington’s top option off the board.

Well, it looks like the Washington Football Team is no longer in the running for former Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford.

News broke on Saturday night that the Lions are sending Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams for a trade package that includes QB Jared Goff, two first-round picks, and a third-round pick.

Stafford will now be the guy in LA, working under Sean McVay and having the benefit of weapons like Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods, and Cam Akers at his disposal.

The Lions also have stocked up for a rebuild, with a load of future picks that they can now use to build their team.

For Washington, this takes the No. 1 QB option off the board, with Stafford no longer available. Now the sites are set on Deshaun Watson, who could make history in a trade by going for potentially four first-round picks, or more, considering what Stafford was traded for.

We have our first blockbuster trade of the 2021 NFL offseason, and we’re still not even to the Super Bowl yet.

The Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Rams are swapping former No. 1 overall picks, as Matthew Stafford and Jared Goff will switch teams, with a pair of future first-round picks heading to the Lions, as well.

The deal also includes a future third-round pick heading to the Lions, as a new era begins for Detroit under head coach Dan Campbell, and Sean McVay gets a veteran passer to lead his innovative offense.

Here are the full details of the trade, courtesy of NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero:

Goff was the last player the Rams selected in the first round, since they’ve traded all of their other first-round picks since. Now with this deal, they’ll go another two years without a first-rounder, making it seven straight years without a first-round pick for the Rams.

Report: Washington open to trading more than just a 1st-round pick for QB

In their search for a new QB, a report shows that Washington is willing to part with more than just a 1st-round pick in order to get their guy.

As the trade market for prospective quarterbacks starts to heat up this offseason, it’s becoming clear that the Washington Football Team is doing everything they can to be involved. According to a report from ESPN’s Josina Anderson, Washington is willing to deal more than just a 1st-rounder for a veteran quarterback, assuming it is the right deal.

That could mean, Deshaun Watson, or Matthew Stafford, or Matt Ryan, or Derek Carr, potentially. A lot of players are on the market and potentially looking for new teams, and we can’t rule out that Washington might not be a good landing spot for any of them.

We’ve gone over what it might take to land some top players like Watson or Stafford in the past, and it’s becoming clear that Ron Rivera and his guys are planning to be in the mix.

Report: Patriots among suitors for Lions QB Matthew Stafford

The Patriots are among the teams in play for Matthew Stafford.

As the offseason continues for the New England Patriots, they are among the suitors for Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford.

Appearing in a periscope from the Senior Bowl on Saturday, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer narrowed down the list to seven teams.

In addition to the Patriots, the Washington Football Team, Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers, and Los Angeles Rams were the suitors for Stafford, according to Breer.

With the news breaking last weekend, there have been constant rumors surrounding Stafford and where he will end up. With New England needing stability at the quarterback position, this could be a viable option for the Patriots.

It will be interesting to see where Stafford goes as he looks to enter a new chapter in what has been a productive career.

Report: Panthers involved in Matt Stafford trade talks

The Carolina Panthers are clearly in the market for an upgrade at the quarterback position.

The Carolina Panthers are clearly in the market for an upgrade at the quarterback position.

In addition to being “aggressive” trying to acquire Deshaun Watson, the team is involved in the Matthew Stafford trade talks, according to a report by Joe Person at the Athletic.

Watson (25) is obviously the grand prize in what’s shaping up to be a very busy QB-movement offseason. However, Houston’s front office has repeatedly said that the organization has no intention of trading him. That might eventually change, but it’s smart to consider other options, as well.

Stafford turns 33 in about a week and also has a lot of teams interested. The Colts, 49ers and Rams have all been connected to the Stafford talks.

While his Lions teams haven’t had a ton of success (he’s only played three playoff games in his career), it would be foolish to blame Stafford for that. He has as much arm talent as any starter in the NFL outside of Kansas City and would make an excellent consolation prize if the Panthers can’t land Watson.

Report: Bears involved in trade talks for Matthew Stafford

With the Bears in desperate need of a quarterback, they’re firmly in the Matthew Stafford sweepstakes heading into Super Bowl week.

The Chicago Bears are expected to be big players in the quarterback market this offseason, which really comes as no surprise for a team that hasn’t had a franchise quarterback in decades.

But with the futures of general manager Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy in jeopardy, they’re likely going to make a splash this offseason. Whether that’s in free agency, the NFL draft or via trade remains to be seen. But there’s no doubt they’re exploring all avenues.

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford is on the trade block, and he’s had no shortage of suitors. There’s a belief that Stafford will be traded before the Super Bowl next Sunday.

According to MMQB’s Albert Breer, there have been seven teams that have shown strong interest in trading for Stafford, including Washington, Carolina, New England, Indianapolis Colts, San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Rams and, yes, the Bears.

Breer went on to discuss how he believes the Lions will get at least a first-round pick, perhaps a first-round pick and something else for Stafford.

While he says Stafford would prefer to go to California with the 49ers or Rams, Breer says they might not have as enticing an offer as other teams in the race.

It still doesn’t seem likely that the Lions would trade Stafford within the division barring a trade offer they simply can’t refuse. But you have to admire the Bears are aggressively pursuing some great quarterback options this offseason, whether that’s Stafford or Houston’s Deshaun Watson.

Still, this Stafford trade discussion is about to ramp up heading into Super Bowl week.

NFC North: Matthew Stafford expected to be traded before Super Bowl

The Lions are expected to trade QB Matthew Stafford, and it sounds like that trade could happen sooner than we all expected.

The Detroit Lions will have a new signal caller for the first time in more than a decade as the team is moving on from quarterback Matthew Stafford. The Lions are expected to trade the 12-year veteran, and it sounds like that trade could happen sooner than we all expected.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, there has been significant interest around the league in trading for Stafford — and that trade could happen as soon as this week before the Super Bowl.

Some of the teams that are reportedly interested in Stafford include the Indianapolis Colts, Los Angeles Rams, the San Francisco 49ers, Carolina Panthers, Washington Football Team and even the Chicago Bears.

At first consideration, it’s not a surprise that the Bears would be interested in trading for Stafford. After all, they’re in desperate need of a quarterback in a season where Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy’s jobs depend on stability at the position.

But on the other hand, there’s no way the Lions are trading Stafford to their division rivals. Not even close. Unless Pace gets a little reckless with draft capital.

Still, Stafford being traded will affect the quarterback market that the Bears are expected to be big players in. Should Stafford go to a number of teams — including the Rams or 49ers — that could open up a veteran option in Jared Goff or Jimmy Garoppolo for Chicago to pursue.

Not to mention there’s still the matter of Deshaun Watson, whether that has to do with the Bears acquiring him or an acquisition by another team.

With just a week before Super Bowl LV kicks off, the offseason already got interesting.

Report: Detroit Lions have ‘quite a few offers’ for Matthew Stafford and a trade could happen soon

Free Press’ Dave Birkett is reporting that the Detroit Lions have “quite a few offers” for Matthew Stafford and a trade could happen soon.

Free Press’ Dave Birkett is reporting that the Detroit Lions have “quite a few offers” on the table for Matthew Stafford and a trade “could be done in the coming days”.

Coach Dan Campbell told Birkett that the meetings between Stafford and the organization were “cordial” but that “you could tell, his (Stafford’s) mind was made up that it was time,” and while they are taking what he wants into consideration, they are  “going to find the best value for the Detroit Lions.”

So what’s the best value for the Lions?

Birkett suggests, “Because the Lions are taking a long-term approach to their rebuild, they likely will value draft capital in any deal.”

It’s been suggested 10-12 teams remain interested in Stafford but Birkett notes that not all of them are “considered realistic suitors”. He narrowed the list saying, “the Indianapolis Colts, Washington and the San Francisco 49ers are believed to be among the interested parties — and the Lions’ proximity to cutting a deal suggests they will get at least a first-round pick.”

It’s worth noting that the at least a first-round pick narrative has been a constant theme since the news broke of Stafford requesting a trade — especially among the Lions’ beat –, and if that is indeed the expected starting price, these three teams have the draft capital to make a competitive offer.

While it’s not clear what the Lions would draw beyond a first-round pick, here’s a look at the above team’s draft capital within the Top-100 picks.

San Francisco holds overall picks No. 12 (first-round), 44 (second-round), and they will be getting a third-round compensatory pick (roughly pick 100 or so) in 2021 after developing a minority coach (Robert Saleh) who was hired as a head coach (New York Jets).

Washington’s first-round pick is lower than the 49ers, but with two third-round picks this year, they could potentially offer a better selection of options. They hold overall picks No. 19 (first-round), 51 (second-round), as well as picks 74 and 82 in the third round.

The Colts hold overall picks No. 21, 54, and 84 meaning they may have to get creative with future picks if they want to keep some of this year’s high draft capital and stay competitive in the bidding process.

Report: Matthew Stafford trade expected to be done by Super Bowl

Are the Colts the spot for Stafford?

The Indianapolis Colts are expected to be one of many teams interested in trading for Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford and it seems we may have an answer before Super Bowl LV kicks off in a week.

As Dave Birkett of The Detroit Free Press reported, the trade talks are escalating. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network added that a deal should be expected before the Super Bowl arrives on Feb. 7.

How much the Colts are willing to pay for Stafford isn’t clear. The Colts run a tight-lipped ship and hardly any news is coming out about their interest in Stafford. But it makes too much sense for them not to be interested.

And the Colts are hardly the only players in this race. The San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos are among some of the top suitors while the Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots may also be in play.

This will be something to watch over the next week or so, especially if the Colts really are near the top of the list for Stafford.
