Ohio State football vs Youngstown State: Five observations halftime review

Ohio State football vs Youngstown State: Five observations at halftime. #GoBucks

The Ohio State football team is looking much better against the Youngstown State Penguins, going into halftime with a 28-7 lead. Now, I understand the Buckeyes had a much slower start than anticipated, but I think there have been more positive takeaways than negative despite the fact that they are playing an FCS opponent.

I don’t want to spoil the list too much, but some of the issues from last week have seemingly disappeared and that should make Ohio State fans happy. Now, some of the same old issues have shown their face, but it is so hard to gauge what is planned considering that the coaching staff was aware of the huge talent discrepancy. Now let’s dive into the five most noticeable things from the first half.

Social media reacts to Ohio State’s slow start against Youngstown State

Not the best start for the Buckeyes #GoBucks

Although [autotag]Ohio State football[/autotag] struck first on a career long touchdown reception from [autotag]Marvin Harrison Jr.[/autotag], it’s not all sunshine and rainbows in Columbus.

The visiting [autotag]Youngstown State Penguins[/autotag] answered the Buckeyes first score with one of their own, tying the game at seven early in the first quarter. It’s a bit surprising, especially considering the talent gap between the two teams.

This isn’t how the Buckeyes wanted to start their day as they don’t really lose to in-state opponents. Plenty of people went to social media to express their frustrations about Ohio State’s home opening play and here are some of the best reactions below.

[autotag]Ohio State football[/autotag] has elected to receive the ball and apparently shove it right down the throat of the Youngstown State penguins. We discussed all week that the gameplan for Ohio State should be to build the confidence of [autotag]Kyle McCord[/autotag] and make that connection to his receivers as strong as possible before the meat of the schedule and that’s what we just saw.

[autotag]Marvin Harrison Jr.[/autotag] just took his longest career reception to the house for six. Harrison scored on a 71-yard touchdown reception and beat the entire Penguin defense to the endzone. Harrison should be able to pad the stats today, but here is the reaction of social media.

2024 NFL draft watch list: Wide receiver prospects for the New Orleans Saints

2024 NFL draft watch list: Wide receiver prospects for the New Orleans Saints to pair with Chris Olave | @DillySanders

The New Orleans Saints drafted Chris Olave in the first round of the NFL draft last year and it worked to great success. Despite that move, many people still consider the Saints to have one of the weaker groups in the league.

The good news is that every receiver class seems to get better than the one before it. That seems to be the case again in 2024, as there are fantastic options no matter where you pick in the first round. With Michael Thomas’ health still looming and Rashid Shaheed still needing to improve as an all around receiver, it might not hurt to add another option.

Here are the names to keep an eye on as the college football season gets started:

Ohio State football’s Marvin Harrison Jr. builds the perfect Buckeye wide receiver

Harrison Jr. might be a bit biased, but this would be one heck of a receiver #GoBucks

[autotag]Marvin Harrison Jr.[/autotag] will go down as one of the most talented wide receivers to play for the [autotag]Ohio State football[/autotag] program.

The junior has been around the game his whole life thanks to his father being a Hall of Fame receiver, so he has seen plenty of talented players. What we don’t know are which of his former or current teammates would make the perfect wide receiver.

Thankfully CBS Sports asked Harrison Jr. to do just that. The Buckeye had to pick players from six different categories; speed, athleticism, ball skills, versatility, after catch and route running. Find out below who the potential No. 1 draft pick selected to make his perfect receiver.

Biggest playmakers in the Big Ten who aren’t quarterbacks in 2023

Who are the biggest non-QB playmakers in the Big Ten? How many Buckeyes make this list? #B1G #GoBucks

The quarterbacks get all of the hype and I am just as guilty of it as evidenced by my top transfer piece, where most of the list are gunslingers. However, some of the most impactful players that affect the game aren’t under-center.

When I evaluate the Big Ten, including the Ohio State roster, I notice that many new quarterbacks are going to get a shot and someone will have to step up.

This list is focused more on the top guys who can take the pressure off the quarterback or even thrive no matter the circumstance. These five players are guys that opposing coaches will need to highlight and circle to work around and even then these players will still likely thrive.

It also just so happens that many of these names should receive some Heisman Trophy hype as well, but let’s dive into the top five non-quarterback playmakers in the Big Ten.

Several prominent 2024 NFL draft prospects make this year’s CFB ‘Freaks’ list

Bruce Feldman’s annual “Freaks” list includes a lot of highly-touted 2024 NFL draft prospects

Every year, Bruce Feldman of The Athletic publishes one of the must-read pieces for every football fan. Feldman’s annual “College Football Freaks” list documents the amazing physical attributes of many of the nation’s collegiate athletes.

While not always an indicator of actual football-playing ability, being included on the “Feldman Freaks” list, as it’s colloquially known, is a real asset for an NFL draft prospect. Along with many prodigiously athletic underclassmen, this year’s list is loaded with prominent 2024 draft prospects.

Here are a few prime prospects that Feldman spotlighted. It becomes quickly evident why the NFL scouts are high on these college athletes.

Two Ohio State football players named to Bruce Feldman’s college football freaks list

Ohio State football had two players named to Bruce Feldman’s college football ‘freaks list.’ You can probably guess one of them.

Every year Bruce Feldman of the Athletic (subscription required) puts out a list highlighting the best athletes in college football headed into the season.  It is always very interesting to look at because it includes star players, as well as players with a lot of potential yet to emerge as household names.

Feldman recently released his full freaks list for this season which had 25 players total named, including two Ohio State players.

The first Buckeye to make the list is Marvin Harrison Jr. at No. 2 on the list.  Harrison Jr. is an obvious choice for this list because he is a very unique talent.  His speed, explosiveness and ability to change directions at his size is at a higher level than any receiver in recent memory in college football.

The other Buckeye to make the list is Sonny Styles who was checked in at No. 20 on the Freaks list.  Though Styles is just 18 years old and doesn’t turn 19 until November, he is already set to play a big role on Ohio State’s defense this fall.

Styles was a five-star recruit and a top 20 player in the 2022 class.  His size at 6-foot-4, 230 pounds, combined with his movement skills make him perfectly suited to excel in both run defense and coverage in a hybrid linebacker safety role.

Chad Johnson will give up interesting vice if this Ohio State player doesn’t win the Heisman

Ocho Cinco is giving up a big treat if Harrison Jr. doesn’t win the Heisman #GoBucks

For a player to win the Heisman Trophy, there needs to be some preseason hype, and Ohio State wide receiver [autotag]Marvin Harrison Jr.[/autotag] has plenty of it.

The junior has been on all the preseason All-American teams that I have seen with expectations going through the roof a punching a hole in the atmosphere. Former NFL wide receiver [autotag]Chad Johnson[/autotag] is adding to that hype.

In an interview with “Meet At Midfield’s” Kevin Harrish, the wide receiver former known as Ocho Cinco, said that he’d give up McDonald’s if Harrison Jr. doesn’t win the Heisman. Listen for yourself below as Johnson has the utmost confidence that the hardware will be Harrison Jr.’s after this fall.

Unfortunately, Johnson might be giving up his Big Mac’s as the last receiver to win the Heisman was Alabama’s [autotag]DeVonta Smith[/autotag] in 2020, but only 5 winners at the position all time. Smith was the first true receiver to win the trophy since Notre Dame’s [autotag]Tim Brown[/autotag] did it in 1987.

We hope Johnson is correct, but history tells us that it’s unlikely that a receiver — even one the caliber of Harrison Jr. — will take the award home this fall.

Ohio State cornerback Davison Igbinosun ‘can check Marvin’ Harrison Jr.

BIA is making their way back #GoBucks

It has been a while since the [autotag]Ohio State football[/autotag] cornerbacks brought a certain amount of swagger to their play, but it seems like it is on it’s way back.

Although [autotag]Davison Igbinosun[/autotag] didn’t sign with the Buckeyes, he transferred in, his first preseason camp looks like it’s going very well. He was named as the Silver Bullet of the Day after the second practice, and today he told the media that he has been splitting rep wins against all-world wide receiver [autotag]Marvin Harrison Jr.[/autotag] at a 50/50 clip.

That is a welcome sight after what transpired last season with the unit, not registering an interception and seemingly getting burned more than a few times a game with costly penalties sprinkled in.

Of course, this is Igbinosun’s opinion and we have a feeling “marvelous Marvin” might have something to say about that, but it sounds like he’s at least holding his own.

Igbinosun was a Freshman All-American at Ole Miss, registering 36 total tackles while breaking up 5 passes. He didn’t record an interception during his lone season with the Rebels and hopefully that changes this fall.

Confidence in a cornerback is a trait you can’t teach and it looks like Igbinosun has plenty of it. This could be the beginning of the return of BIA (Best in America).
