Do you know who Florida’s highest-rated recruit of the last decade is?

This former Gator was the second-highest-ranked prep prospect overall in the 2015 recruiting cycle.

Once upon a time, the University of Florida was a premiere destination for the top prep talent in the nation. Unfortunately, those days are now in the distant past but first-year head coach [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] is hell-bent on getting the Gators back to that promised land.

The peaks of the program came under [autotag]Steve Spurrier[/autotag] and [autotag]Urban Meyer[/autotag], with [autotag]Ron Zook[/autotag] connecting the two tenures with some solid recruiting of his own. But after the drama that surrounded Meyer’s final year in Gainesville, Florida fans were dealt a string of letdowns that led to a difficult decade in the Swamp.

However, in the recruiting class split between the outgoing [autotag]Will Muschamp[/autotag] and the incoming [autotag]Jim McElwain[/autotag], the Orange and Blue landed one of the crown jewels of the 2015 cycle — five-star offensive tackle [autotag]Martez Ivey[/autotag], who was the No. 2 overall prospect in his class and the top-rated player over the past decade for Florida. Here is what 247Sports’ writer Cameron Salerno offered on the former standout, who held a .9991 grade.

Coming out of Apopka (Florida) High School, Ivey was ranked as the No. 2 overall prospect in the 2015 recruiting cycle by 247Sports. The player that was ranked ahead of Ivey was Trenton Thompson, who signed with SEC rival Georgia. After going undrafted during the 2019 NFL draft, Ivey signed with the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent. He currently plays for the Edmonton Elks of the Canadian Football League.

Ivey was one of many disappointments to come out of Florida during the middle of the decade and his failure to follow through on his immense talent undoubtedly took its toll on McElwain’s efforts. It just goes to show that nothing is ever certain when it comes to sports recruiting.

These five former Gators were part of the recent NFL roster cuts

A handful of Florida alumni were cut from their NFL teams this weekend.

It’s almost time for the NFL to begin its season, and with that comes the paring down of rosters. A few former Gators received the unfortunate news this weekend, including Cam Newton.

Most remember Newton in college from his Heisman campaign at Auburn in 2010, but he played behind Tim Tebow at Florida during the 2008 national championship season before a legal issue forced his departure from the university. The 2015 NFL MVP is one of the most high-profile players to be cut so far as he was expected to help transition Mac Jones in as the future quarterback in New England.

Another former Gators quarterback was waived in Will Grier. Grier backed up Jeff Driskel in 2014 but was suspended for PED use in the following year. He then transferred to West Virginia and wound up drafted by the Carolina Panthers in 2019. There’s a chance he makes Carolina’s practice squad if he isn’t claimed.

The Panthers also waived offensive tackle Martez Ivey, who played for the Gators until 2018. After going undrafted and being cut in the preseason by the Patriots in 2019, Ivey joined the Tampa Bay Vipers of the XFL until the league folded.

The Denver Broncos waived Tyrie Cleveland after drafting him in the seventh round in 2020.  He might be best remembered by Gators fans for catching a game-winning Hail Mary from Felipe Franks (who made the cut for the Atlanta Falcons) against Tennessee in 2017.

Finally,  the Miami Dolphins released Jordan Scarlett, who they signed to a reserve/future contract in January.

Panthers signing former Florida OL Martez Ivey to 1-year deal

The Panthers have their new quarterback. Now they have to protect him.

The Panthers have their new quarterback. Now they have to protect him.

The first transaction the team has made after dealing for Sam Darnold is signing free agent offensive lineman Martez Ivey, per Adam Schefter at ESPN.

Ivey (6-foot-5, 306 pounds) played his college football at Florida, where he lined up mostly at left guard and left tackle. The Panthers likely see him as a backup for both spots.

At the moment, we’re projecting Pat Elflein to start at left guard and Trent Scott at left tackle, but the acquisition of Darnold makes it much more likely Carolina will use its first-round pick on the top left tackle prospect that’s still on the board when they pick at No. 8.

Adding Ivey helps make up for some of the OL depth the team lost in free agency. Expect them to sign another guard or two before the offseason program reallly begins, though.

Fab Four: Selecting Florida football’s Mount Rushmore of all-time recruits

On the eve of early signing day, Gators Wire recalls the most hyped commits in school history.

Florida Gators football came into prominence only recently in the grand scale of college football history, emerging from the swamps of the Southeastern Conference in the early 1990s behind its Heisman hero, Steve Spurrier, and his fun-and-gun offense.

As the team improved in the standings, it also made headway off the field on the recruiting front. It was not until Urban Meyer took over that the program reached stratospheric heights when it came to bringing in some of the best players the nation’s high school ranks had to offer.

In fact, two of our top four all-time recruits arrived during Meyer’s watch, while the Ol’ Head Ball Coach snagged one and Jim McElwain, who oversaw one of the two worst seasons in Gainesville since 1979, also scored a victory in the prep wars.

Here is Gator Wire’s Mount Rushmore of prospects, but first take a look at our honorable mentions.
