Will Wade addresses team’s issues as frustration mounts

Wade addresses the effort of the men’s basketball team.

After starting the basketball campaign 14-1 and 2-1 in the SEC, the wheels have completely come off for the LSU men’s basketball program. Will Wade’s team is 2-6 overall and 2-5 in SEC play since that day.

For the second game in a row, the Tigers found themselves down 20+ points to a team they shouldn’t struggle with as they have. Once again the Tigers came storming back to get within five before the Vanderbilt Commodores ran away with it again.

The well-oiled machine that we saw for the majority of the season is a shell of their former selves. Rotations on defense are slow, the timing on closeouts is off. Not to mention they are trying to create off the bounce rather than get into their sets. Too many sloppy turnovers and contested three-point shots. Overall, the team just looks out of rhythm and Wade addressed it after the game.

“It’s hard to be confident when you’ve lost six out of seven,” Wade said in his postgame press conference. The head coach understands that this team is lacking confidence at this point. “I mean look, we’ve got to inject a little confidence in our guys and we’ve got to get back to certainly playing better than we are now.”

It isn’t just one side of the floor that has been the issue for the Purple and Gold. Sloppy play at both ends is exacerbated by the fact that they aren’t healthy right now. They recently got Darius Days back but Xavier Pinson sat once again as he tries to recover from the knee injury suffered in their first matchup with the Tennessee Vols.

“Some of its health, but we can’t blame it all on that. Everybody’s got some issues. We didn’t get an offensive rebound in the first half, that’s an effort issue. We don’t follow the details on the scouting report. Give up 11 threes to two of their best shooters, that’s a detail issue. So it’s a little bit of both”

The good news for LSU is that their next game comes against Texas A&M, the only team the Tigers have beaten in their last six chances. The Bayou Bengals travel to College Station on Tuesday, where Wade will try once again to get his 100th career win at LSU.

Wade is current 99-46 and 50-29 in SEC play over his five seasons on the Bayou. LSU has won the last nine games and all four road games against the Aggies since Wade took over for Johnny Jones in 2017.

LSU vs Vanderbilt Game Preview

Why LSU Will Win

The Tigers have fallen off the map over the last several games, but they still do a whole lot of things right.

They steal the ball more than anyone in college basketball – at least on a per game basis – they still play a nasty brand of defense that makes it hard to do anything from the outside, and they still rebound as well as almost anyone in the SEC.

Vanderbilt is bad on the boards, bad from three, and it turns it over too much. It’s not going to get enough offensive rebounds to matter off the misses, and …

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

It’s shooting a whole lot better than LSU lately.

This still isn’t a great shooting team overall, and it’s only 1-2 in its last three games, but it’s been connecting on around 47% from the field over the last week and it couldn’t seem to miss from three in the win over Georgia.

LSU – on the other hand – can’t buy a bucket. It’s struggling just to get to 40% from the field over this 1-5 streak, it’s not turning enough of those steals into easy points, and the defense that’s been so amazing all year is getting roasted because teams are hitting their free throws.

If Vanderbilt can get to the line early and often, it can pull this off. However …

What’s Going To Happen

When Vanderbilt goes cold, it goes cold to a dead stop.

It’s a tad late in the season for this, but LSU is in a rut; Vanderbilt is just struggling. The difference is that LSU can win if the game is low scoring, and Vanderbilt just can’t.

The Commodores are 8-0 when they score 73 or more and 3-10 when they don’t.

LSU has allowed more than 73 points just twice.

Why LSU Will Win

Is KJ Costello and the Mississippi State offense on the other side? Nope? Okay, start from there and move forward.

Lost in the loss to the Bulldogs was an okay day from Myles Brennan. He missed too many throws and gave up two picks, but he also threw for 345 yards and helped keep the team alive in the 44-34 loss.

Star CB Derek Stingley Jr. is expected to be back after missing last week with a non-COVID related illness, and the defense really is a whole lot better than it looked in the loss.

Vanderbilt has to still prove it can get the O moving, struggling to get 12 points on the board in the loss to Texas A&M, finishing with 252 yards of total offense.

Don’t expect much of a running game from the Commodores against the Tiger front four. If LSU scores early, it should be able to coast.

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Just how down is LSU?

Even with all the talent and personnel losses, LSU is still the defending national champ, and it’s likely going to press a bit after the embarrassing performance on Saturday.

Vandy’s loss to Texas A&M might not have been pretty, but the defense is the real deal. It did a strong job of getting off the field on third downs, forced three takeaways, and it made up for a few problems against the run with enough big stops to make up for them.

There might not be a whole lot of pressure in the backfield, but the Commodores will hold up just enough against the run to keep LSU from controlling the tempo.

What’s Going To Happen

This still isn’t going to be the 2019 LSU team running out of the tunnel, but it’s going to be a whole lot better overall than it looked against Mississippi State.

The Mike Leach offense took LSU out of its game. It turned into a track meet, and the Tigers had to try to keep up. This will be a whole lot different of a game without any real worries over Vanderbilt big offensive plays.

This will be LSU’s game throughout, but the Commodore D will keep this from getting brutal.
