Surprisingly out of form, the Galaxy are looking to crawl out of the basement of the Western Conference as they sit in 13th place with just six points. But L.A. is fresh off a 3-1 win over the Seattle Sounders in a midweek cup clash.

On the flip side, San Jose is the their best form at this point of the season with 18 points, good for a fourth-place position. The Earthquakes’ attacking approach is fun, but they’ve allowed 14 goals (11 on the road), which is the most of any team in the top seven.

Ahead of a pivotal matchup for both teams, here is everything you need to know to stream the action:

Galaxy defender Martín Cáceres earned a completely unnecessary red card while interfering with a video review

What are you doing, Martín Cáceres??

Los Angeles Galaxy veteran defender Martín Cáceres made an inexplicable mistake during his team’s Saturday contest against the Houston Dynamo.

While one of the game’s referees was in the VAR booth reviewing a sequence, Cáceres walked over to the booth and threw his hands up to contest the review. He also tapped the referee on the shoulder, which is a huge no-no.

As you well know, professional athletes of any sport are absolutely barred at any point from interfering with an official review. The referee wasn’t having Cáceres interfering, so he handed the defender his second yellow card and a red card.

The penalty put Los Angeles down to 10 men for the rest of the match while down a goal to Houston.

The Galaxy would lose to the Dynamo 3-0, only making Cáceres’ bizarre blunder that much harder to swallow.

It’s just not common to see a player like Cáceres just forget the basic rules of the game after spending years playing in the top leagues in soccer and for the Uruguay national team.

The Galaxy brings a veteran player like Cáceres over to set a tone on the pitch and in the locker room. Neither happened on Saturday as trying to dispute an officiating review while it was happening led to Cáceres earning one of the more ridiculous red cards you’re likely to see a player get.

Michigan State soccer breakout star Farai Mutatu drafted in first round of MLS SuperDraft

Michigan State soccer breakout star Farai Mutatu drafted in first round of MLS SuperDraft

Another Michigan State Men’s soccer player is headed to the MLS. On Tuesday, MSU’s breakout star of the 2021-22 season was selected with the No. 21 overall pick in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft by the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Mutatu had seven goals and three assists in 17 matches during the 2021-22 season.

“There’s a lot of emotion, I’m so grateful, and feel extremely blessed to be given this opportunity, and thank you LA Galaxy for believing in me and giving me this opportunity, I’m just so grateful,” Mutatu said in an interview. “Seeing my parents on the call and announced that call, honestly, I couldn’t have imagined it to be any better. It’s a dream come true. I just wanted to first and foremost give all glory and honor to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I wouldn’t be here without him. I thank my family and all my friends, my teammates and my coaches that have helped me get here. I’m just really grateful and excited to get going.”

This is the fourth straight year an MSU alumni has been selected in the draft.

Prediction

LAFC 3, LA Galaxy 2

Moneyline (ML)

LAFC (-143) might be without Vela, who elected not to travel to the bubble in Central Florida to stay home with his pregnant girlfriend. However, LAFC proved against the Houston Dynamo that it still has plenty of firepower, hitting the back of the net three times. The LA Galaxy (+350) played close to the Portland Timbers last time out, falling 2-1. However, the Galaxy lack the offensive punch to keep up with their crosstown rivals.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 3.5 (+110) is a solid play in this battle of SoCal rivals. Five of the past six head-to-head meetings have seen four or more goals, and both sides have scored at least once in each of the past six. As a result, BACKING YES (-200) ON BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE should also be a sound play.

LA Galaxy vs. Portland Timbers: MLS odds, betting lines and picks

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Monday at 8 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Portland 1, Los Angeles 0

Moneyline (ML)

PORTLAND (+150) is a solid play here. The Timbers have already tasted victory once this season, and they’ve yet to experience a setback, going 1-0-1. LA Galaxy (+165) managed to find the back of the net just once in the first two matches of the regular season, and the long layoff due to the COVID-19 pandemic is unlikely to do them any favors. Rust won’t be a friend to their offense.

A $10 wager on Portland (+150) to win outright nets a profit of $15. A $10 wager on LA (+165) to win would net a profit of $16.50, while a Draw or Tie (+270) would fetch a $27 profit.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 3.5 (-162) is a slam-dunk play here. Both teams had trouble penetrating the net of the opponent in their first two matches, with Los Angeles accounting for just one goal, and Portland posting just two total goals. Both sides played pretty strong defense in the first two matches, too. While we have seen 2.5 or more goals in each of the past three in this series, lean Under and lean hard.
