Gators redshirt sophomore EDGE joins others in transfer portal

Another Gator hits the road on Tuesday, this time a redshirt sophomore edge defender.

Another member of the 2022 Florida football team entered the NCAA transfer portal on Tuesday morning when redshirt sophomore edge defender [autotag]Lloyd Summerall III[/autotag] decided to search for a new program to play for, according to On3’s Hayes Fawcett.

The 6-foot-5-inch, 231-pound defender from Lakeland, Florida, played in a total of 28 games for the Gators dating back to his first year in 2019. A four-star recruit coming out of high school, he managed to see some action early on under Dan Mullen, but did not earn any significant playing time until the former head coach’s final season in 2021.

Summerall appeared in three games his freshman season before playing in a pair the following year — both earning a redshirt designation. During the 2021 and 2022 campaigns, he appeared in 12 and 11 games, respectively, with most of his reps in the latter season coming on special teams.

He amassed five solo and 10 assisted tackles over his four years in Gainesville, including 1.5 sacks, three tackles for a loss and one fumble recovery, while also returning one kickoff return for 20 yards last fall.

Depth Chart: Florida dealing with injuries ahead of Texas A&M game

We know Florida will have to make up for the loss of Brenton Cox Jr. this week, but that wasn’t the only change made to the depth chart ahead of Texas A&M.

There were a number of notable changes on the weekly update to Florida’s depth chart, most of which had to do with injuries and departures from the team.

Following the departure of JACK linebacker [autotag]Brenton Cox Jr[/autotag]., [autotag]Antwaun Powell-Ryland Jr[/autotag]. is now listed as the starter with [autotag]Lloyd Summerall III[/autotag] and David Reese behind him. Summerall should be the No. 2, but he is coming off an injury.

Nickelback Kamar Wilcoxson’s third-string spot at the STAR position was left blank this week.

Wide receiver [autotag]Justin Shorter[/autotag] might be the most notable addition to the injury report. Florida’s leading receiver is listed as questionable for Saturday’s contest with a lower-body injury. Shorter ranks in the top 10 for receiving yards among SEC players and has hauled in a pair of touchdown passes this year.

Expect sophomore [autotag]Ja’Quavion Fraziars[/autotag] and true freshman [autotag]Caleb Douglas[/autotag] to receive an increased workload if Shorter can’t go.

Tight end [autotag]Keon Zipperer[/autotag] is also dealing with an injury and won’t play on Saturdays. An Instagram post that was later deleted sparked some fear that he’d be out for the rest of the year, but Billy Napier said there’s still hope for him to return this year.

“Keon, I don’t know where that got blown out of — that’s wild,” Napier said with a smile. “Keon’ got a little bit of a knee (injury). Nothing long-term there. It’s very much to be determined based off his rehab and recovery right now. We don’t expect him to be available this weekend, but long-term no issue there.”

Inside linebacker [autotag]Scooby Williams[/autotag] is questionable to play as well, but the corps of [autotag]Amari Burney[/autotag] and [autotag]Ventrell Miller[/autotag] should hold up with true freshman [autotag]Shemar James[/autotag] and sophomore [autotag]Derek Wing[/autotag]o behind them.

Linebacker [autotag]Diwun Black[/autotag], tight ends [autotag]Arlis Boardingham[/autotag] and [autotag]Nick Elksnis[/autotag] and cornerback [autotag]Devin Moore [/autotag]were all listed as out once again. Napier provided an update on Moore following a shoulder surgery that will keep him out for the rest of the season.

Florida dismisses starting EDGE Brenton Cox Jr.

Billy Napier addressed the dismissal of EDGE Brenton Cox Jr. after the shocking news broke on Monday morning.

Florida JACK linebacker [autotag]Brenton Cox Jr[/autotag]. has been dismissed from the team.

Zach Abolverdi of Gators Online was first with the report, and head coach Billy Napier confirmed the news during his weekly press conference.

“Brenton, we’ve kind of decided to move on here. I think that being a football player at the University of Florida is a privilege. There are certain expectations and standards that come with that. Brenton’s now been here in his third year. Obviously, he’s done a lot of good things for the University of Florida and we wish him the best.

“Sometimes, you have to make decisions in the best interest of the team. Certainly, Brenton, we’re going to do everything we can do to help him with his transition. But it’s as simple as that, I think that we’ve decided to move on.”

Napier was asked if Cox threw a punch at the end of the Georgia game, but the head coach said he was unaware of such events. He declined to go into specifics, calling the decision a “cumulative effect.”

As far as replacing Cox in the starting 11, Florida’s already mildly prepared for the loss. [autotag]Lloyd Summerall III[/autotag] and [autotag]Antwaun Powell-Ryland Jr[/autotag]. have seen plenty of time on the field, and Napier expects to lean on those two heavily for the rest of the season.

“We’ve been playing a handful of players in that position the entire year. So, AP and Lloyd and those guys will do a really good job. They’ve been playing in each and every game for the most part. I know Lloyd was out this past week, but we’ll just continue in that direction.”

Napier declined to answer most follow-ups regarding the topic, citing his earlier decision to keep that kind of information “in-house.”

Depth Chart: Florida OL O’Cyrus Torrence ready to return against Georgia

Florida’s weekly depth chart is out, and it looks like right guard O’Cyrus Torrence will be back on the field against Georgia.

The Florida Gators will welcome back their right guard [autotag]O’Cyrus Torrence[/autotag] on Saturday when they take on the Georgia Bulldogs.

UF released its weekly depth chart on Wednesday, and Torrence is no longer listed on the injury report with the lower-body issue that kept him out of the LSU game. He tried to play against the Tigers but didn’t feel well enough during pre-game warmups to take the field. Getting him back will provide a massive boost to Florida’s running game against what might be the best defense in the country.

That’s not the only change in the offensive line rotation. [autotag]Josh Braun[/autotag] is no longer with the team after announcing his intentions to enter the transfer portal in December upon graduating from UF. [autotag]Richie Leonard IV[/autotag], who was already ahead of Braun in the rotation, is now listed as the team’s backup at both guard positions.

The defensive unit remained mostly untouched through the bye week. JACK linebacker [autotag]Lloyd Summerall III[/autotag] is questionable with an upper-body injury, but he’s still listed as Florida’s third-string option behind [autotag]Brenton Cox Jr[/autotag]. and [autotag]Antwaun Powell-Ryland Jr[/autotag].

Linebacker [autotag]Diwun Black[/autotag] is still on the injury list with a lower-body issue. He missed Florida’s game against LSU and should be out against Georgia. True freshman cornerback [autotag]Devin Moore[/autotag] is also unlikely to play after missing the past two games.

2022 Florida Football Season Preview: Outside Linebackers

The Gators have a decent amount of depth at outside linebacker, but it’s Brenton Cox Jr. who leads the group heading into the 2022 season.

After going over the defensive linemen on the team in detail, it’s time to talk about Florida’s outside linebackers room heading into 2022.

These are the edge rushers of the team that are expected to cause havoc opposite of [autotag]Princely Umanmielen[/autotag] at the strongside defensive end spot. [autotag]Brenton Cox Jr[/autotag]. leads the group and is returning for his third year at Florida.

The Gators are only losing two players at the position, [autotag]Jeremiah Moon[/autotag] to graduation and [autotag]Khris Bogle[/autotag] to the transfer portal, and they added two freshmen in the most recent cycle. Florida still has plenty of depth on the edge, though. Cox should be good for 13 starts barring injury, and there’s a trio behind him that can do the job if he does need any rest.

Here’s a look at all eight outside linebackers/JACK/edge rushers on the 2022 Florida Gators football roster.

Florida continues to stand out for this 5-star cornerback

Florida and Alabama still sit in the best spot for five-star cornerback Cormani McClain out of Lakeland, Florida.

Five-star cornerback [autotag]Cormani McClain[/autotag] visited Florida for its spring game about a month ago now. Now the Gators are returning the favor. They sent cornerbacks coach [autotag]Corey Raymond[/autotag] to watch his spring game at Lake Gibson in Lakeland, Florida, this week. He told reporters afterward that Florida and Alabama continue to stand out to him.

McClain is ranked as the third overall prospect nationally and the best player at his position, according to the 247Sports composite. He only has three crystal ball picks entered on his profile, but they were all in the favor of Florida.

He’s arguably the Gators’ top target this cycle due to his ranking and his proximity to campus. He hails from a Florida-friendly area in Lakeland. Some current players on the roster that grew up there include tight end [autotag]Keon Zipperer[/autotag], defensive end [autotag]Lloyd Summerall III[/autotag], linebacker [autotag]Ventrell Miller[/autotag], wide receiver [autotag]Fenley Graham Jr[/autotag]. and running back [autotag]Demarkcus Bowman[/autotag].

McClain told Swamp247 that he’s focused on taking only official visits now and has set one to Georgia for June 24. He said he plans on taking one to Florida in early June and Alabama. However, he doesn’t believe he’ll make a decision until after his senior season.

Florida football gets defensive lineman back from transfer portal

Florida gets some much-needed depth on the defensive line back.

Six Gators announced their intentions to enter the transfer portal following the end of the regular season. Jacob Copeland has already moved on to Maryland, Gerald Mincey to Tenneessee and Khris Bogle to Michigan State, but Lloyd Summerall III became the first player to remove his name and return to Florida on Saturday.

After looking at other options for a month (Summerall entered the portal Dec. 2), the former four-star recruit decided to stay put and play for Billy Napier in the Swamp, according to a report from 247Sports. Summerall has played sparingly for the Gators in his first three seasons with the team, but he should see more playing time next year with Florida’s defensive line losing some key players.

Brenton Cox Jr. is expected to return for one more season, which is one of the reasons Bogle likely moved on. Summerall should be behind Cox on the depth chart and competing with Antwuan Powell, who also has more playing time on the books than him. Rising redshirt junior Dante Zanders is also in the portal, which opens up some reps at the other end spot.

Over three seasons at Florida, Summerall has played in 17 games and recorded three solo tackles, six assisted tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks.

Gators lose another edge rusher to the transfer portal

Lloyd Summerall III became the fourth Florida player to enter the transfer portal since the conclusion of the regular season on Saturday.

Four Florida players have now entered the transfer portal since the team announced the hiring of Louisiana’s Billy Napier as the next head coach on Sunday. The latest came on Thursday when edge rusher Lloyd Summerall III elected to enter the portal, according to 247Sports’ Blake Alderman.

Summerall was a four-star recruit and top 300 player coming out of Lakeland, per the 247Sports Composite, and he was one of three Lakeland High School teammates to sign with Florida in the 2019 recruiting class alongside tight end Keon Zipperer and guard Deyavie Hammond, who never matriculated and now plays at Independence Community College in Kansas.

When the Gators landed Summerall, it was a big win over Miami for former coach Dan Mullen in his first full recruiting cycle. However, Summerall’s impact on the field has been very limited in his first three years, and his decision to transfer isn’t exactly a surprising one.

He redshirted his first season in 2019 after appearing in three games and notching two total tackles, and he earned his first sack as a redshirt freshman in 2020 despite only appearing in two games. In 2021, he saw his biggest role by far, appearing in all 12 games. However, he only had four tackles. The best game of his career came against Vanderbilt this season, when he had three total tackles and half a sack.

Florida’s edge-rushing depth already took a major hit on Wednesday when Khris Bogle entered the transfer portal, and now the Gators are down yet another man. Those two join defensive lineman Dante Zanders and offensive lineman Gerald Mincey in the transfer portal.

With Bogle and Summerall gone, Florida will likely turn to Princely Umanmielen, who saw a good amount of reps this season, as well as Antwaun Powell, who appeared in 10 games as a redshirt freshman in 2021.

Some roster turnover is to be expected whenever there’s a coaching change, but Billy Napier may need to look to the portal himself to shore up depth along the defensive line after losing three players from it this week.
