Season series: First meeting; Liberty swept series 4-0 in 2023

The Fever opened with a lopsided 92-71 loss at Connecticut in the regular-season opener on Tuesday night. While Indiana was able to add generational talent Caitlin Clark with the No. 1 overall pick, it showed the team still has a long way to go.

Clark made one of the most highly-anticipated debuts in WNBA history against the Sun, going for 20 points, including 4 triples. But she was just 5-of-15 from the field, and Clark turned it over 10 times. She did posted 3 assists and 2 steals, while going 6-of-6 at the free-throw line, though.

The Liberty came up short in the WNBA Finals last season against the Las Vegas Aces, losing in 4 games.

New York opened with an 85-80 win at Washington on Tuesday, although it came nowhere close to covering as 11.5-point favorites as the Over (164.5) just barely came in.

Jonquel Jones led the way against the Mystics with 25 points, 8 rebounds and 4 triples, while Sabrina Ionescu had 15 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. Breanna Stewart also added 8 boards, although she struggled from the field with just 3-of-9 shooting and 8 points in the opener.

Liberty 86, Fever 77

Moneyline

The Liberty (-300) is a rather deep team as long as they can stay healthy. New York has a “Big 3”, and Courtney Vandersloot might give them a “Big 4”. New York is going to be a lot to handle again in 2024. However, risking 3 times your potential return, especially with all of the hoopla surrounding Clark’s home pro debut, is not a recommended betting strategy.

Clark gives the Fever (+240) a huge boost, in terms of interest, talent and production. But, like at Iowa, she is mostly going to have to carry this team on her back and make others around her better. It is going to be a slow process, and Indiana can’t be trusted to win against elite teams right now.

PASS.

Against the spread

The LIBERTY -7.5 (-110) are worth playing on the road, as they should get the job done by 4 buckets.

While Clark +7.5 (-110) isn’t likely to turn it over 10 times again, and the butterflies for her pro debut are gone, Stewart isn’t going to struggle with her shot like she did in Washington, either. The Liberty have tremendous scoring and defense from top to bottom, and it’s a tough start for the Fever from a scheduling standpoint.

Clark and Indiana will win a lot more games together, but it isn’t ready to take down one of the league’s best teams, or even come close, at least not yet.

Over/Under

UNDER 168.5 (-110) is the lean, but a half-unit play is as high as you should go here.

The Liberty barely went over in Washington, cashing high by a half-point at most shops.

The Fever hit the Under despite allowing 92 points to the Sun, cashing the Under (166.5) in their 21-point setback. Clark will get hers, but the rest of the team is still a bit offensively challenged. And if you’re curious, it’s -105 on Clark to score over 20 points.
