The Bears are signing QB Kyle Sloter to practice squad

The Bears are adding insurance at quarterback with the addition of Kyle Sloter to the practice squad.

The Chicago Bears have had their share of struggles at the quarterback position this season. While starter Nick Foles has been struggling behind a stingy offensive line, back-up Mitchell Trubisky is recovering from an injury to his right throwing shoulder.

Which is why the Bears are adding some insurance at quarterback with the addition of Kyle Sloter to the practice squad, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Sloter had a workout with the Bears last week following Trubisky’s shoulder injury, which marked the second time this year that he’s had a tryout with Chicago. He previously worked out for the Bears back in August.

Sloter, who joined the NFL in 2017, has absolutely wowed in preseason, posting an 11-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio and averaging a 74% completion percentage and a 119.8 quarterback rating.

While the Bears remain confident that Trubisky’s shoulder injury won’t keep him out too long — he’s considered week-to-week — they’re bringing in reinforcements should he not be good to go Monday night against the Minnesota Vikings.

For now, it’s practice squad quarterback Tyler Bray backing up Foles at quarterback.

With Mitchell Trubisky injured, Bears working out QBs Jake Rudock, Kyle Sloter

With Trubisky hurt and Bray the backup, the Bears decided to bring in some reinforcements at QB working out Jake Rudock and Kyle Sloter.

Stop me if you’ve heard this before: The Chicago Bears have some uncertainty at the quarterback position.

Back-up quarterback Mitchell Trubisky saw the field for one play against the New Orleans Saints, where he kept the ball on a read-option and picked up three yards. It also proved to be costly as Trubisky suffered an injury to his right throwing shoulder on the play.

NFL Network’s Mike Garofolo reported there’s concern that it’s a structural issue. But “the extent is unclear at this point,” although the injury is expected to keep Trubisky out for a few weeks.

“It’s unfortunate, and I know that he’s bummed out,” Bears coach Matt Nagy said.

With Trubisky injured, the Bears are down to just Tyler Bray as the back-up to starter Nick Foles, who has his own history of injuries and not surviving an entire season.

So the Bears decided to bring in some reinforcements, working out quarterbacks Jake Rudock and Kyle Sloter on Wednesday.

According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, the Bears tried to sign Rudock off the Detroit Lions’ practice squad back in 2016 following an injury to Jay Cutler. But Rudock decided to stay with the Lions.

Sloter previously worked out for the Bears back in August. Sloter, who joined the NFL in 2017 like Trubisky, has absolutely wowed in preseason, posting an 11-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio and averaging a 74% completion percentage and a 119.8 quarterback rating.

We’ll see if either has a strong enough workout to warrant signing to the practice squad as additional insurance.

The New York Giants held tryouts on Wednesday despite it being a travel day, and met with five different free agents.

Among those in attendance in East Rutherford were wide receiver Michael Walker and quarterback Kyle Sloter.

Walker, who was Second Team All-American and Second Team All-ACC in 2018, was originally signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Boston College in 2019.

The 5-foot-11, 195-pound Walker appeared in seven games last season, hauling in two receptions for 15 yards, while adding 411 yards on 18 kickoff returns.

Sloter (6-foot-5, 218 pounds) signed with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent rookie out of Northern Colorado in 2017. He’s also spent time with the Minnesota Vikings (2017-2018), Arizona Cardinals (2019) and Detroit Lions (2019). He has never appeared in an NFL game.

Also visiting the Giants were defensive backs Saquan Hampton and Jeremiah Dinson, as well as wide receiver Chris Lacy.

Hampton (6-foot-1, 206 pounds) is a New Jersey native who was born in Hamilton Township and attended Rutgers. He was a sixth-round pick of the New Orleans Saints in the 2019 NFL Draft and was released with an injury settlement in September. He’s appeared in five career games and recorded one tackle.

Dinson (5-foot-11, 189) went undrafted in April after leading Auburn in tackles in 2019, and has bounced around between the Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions. He has yet to appear in an NFL game.

Lacy (6-foot-3, 205 pounds) originally signed with the New England Patriots as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Oklahoma State in 2018. He’s also spent time with the Detroit Lions (2018-2019). He has appeared in eight career games (two starts), hauling in three receptions for 60 yards and returning one kickoff for 23 yards.

There’s just two hours remaining until the league’s 4 p.m. roster deadline and the Atlanta Falcons aren’t wasting any time. Rookie wide receiver Chris Rowland is the latest casualty.

As reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Jason Butt, the team has waived the former Tennessee State special teams standout..

Rowland, an undrafted free agent, was in a competitive battle with WR Brandon Powell throughout training camp to be the Falcons’ kick returner.

If Rowland clears waivers, expect to see him land on Atlanta’s 16-man practice squad. The team has also released QB Kurt Benkert, QB Kyle Lauletta, WR Laquon Treadwell and SS J.J. Wilcox.

Report: Seahawks bring in QB Kyle Sloter and 2 WRs for workouts

ESPN NFL insider Field Yates reported that the Seattle Seahawks brought in Kyle Sloter, Justin Hardy, and Lance Lenoir for workouts.

ESPN’s Field Yates reported Thursday that the Seattle Seahawks recently brought in quarterback Kyle Sloter and wide receivers Lance Lenoir and Justin Hardy for workouts.

Sloter was originally signed by the Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2017, but the team waived him before the start of the regular season despite a strong preseason. He spent time with the Vikings and Cardinals, had a brief stint with the Lions, and had a workout with the Bears in mid-August.

Justin Hardy spent his first five seasons with the Falcons, tallying minor production every year before the team let him walk in free agency in 2020. With his exception of seven games in his rookie season, Hardy has never missed a game in his five-year NFL career.

Lance Lenoir is a former Cowboy who has only played eight games in his career and has no offensive stats whatsoever.

None of these players will be expected to be game-changing contributors, but they could be signed for depth purposes. Time will tell if any of them will be wearing blue and green for the 2020 season.

Broncos might add a ‘quarantine quarterback’ to roster

The Broncos might consider adding a ‘quarantine quarterback’ to their roster.

Less than a week into training camp, the Denver Broncos’ quarterback depth chart appears to be pretty much set — if everyone stays healthy.

Drew Lock is the obvious starter and Jeff Driskel is the No. 2. Brett Rypien is expected to serve as QB3, possibly from the practice squad.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Broncos might bring a fourth option — a “quarantine quarterback,” according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

The fourth QB would self isolate and attend team meetings virtually from home while studying the offense and working out on his own. That QB would be called upon in case of an emergency, such as Lock and Driskel both catching the virus at the same time.

Because the NFL will allow teams to carry four veterans on practice squads this season, the “quarantine QB” wouldn’t have to take up a spot on the active roster. The list of veteran QBs available that Klis mentioned by name includes Blake Bortles, Josh McCown and Drew Stanton.

Kyle Shurmur, the son of Broncos offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, and Kyle Sloter, who started his career in Denver, are also available.

Sloter was with the Minnesota Vikings from 2017-2018 and he spent time with the Arizona Cardinals and Detroit Lions last season. Sloter visited the Chicago Bears earlier this week but is currently still a free agent.

Bears camp: Chicago hosting several tryouts at QB, RB and WR

It’s been a busy day for the Chicago Bears. After completing their first day of padded practices, the team is working out several players.

It’s been a busy day for the Chicago Bears. After completing their first day of padded practices, the team is working out some offensive players at Halas Hall.

According to Chicago Tribune’s Brad Bigg, the Bears hosted several tryouts with quarterbacks Mason Fine, Kevin Hogan and Kyle Sloter, as well running back CJ Prosise and wide receivers Austin Proehl, Jeff Badet, Rodney Adams and Alex Wesley.

Fine, a two-time C-USA Player of the Year, impressed during his time at North Texas. He’s coming off a season where he played 12 games and threw for 2,820 yards, 27 touchdowns and seven interception. His best season came in 2017, where he threw for 4,015 yards and 31 touchdowns.

Hogan, who hasn’t played since 2018, started eight games in two years with the Cleveland Browns. During that span, he completed 60 of 101 passes (59.4%) for 621 yards with four touchdowns and seven interceptions for a 34.5 quarterback rating. Not exactly encouraging stats.

Sloter, a three-year veteran, has impressed in the preseason. In three preseasons, Sloter has an 11-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio and has averaged a 74% completion percentage and a 119.8 quarterback rating with the Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings.

In four seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, former third-round pick Prosise has 65 rushes for 264 yards with a 4.7 yards-per-carry average and two touchdowns in 25 games. His best season came as a rookie in 2016, where he 30 rushes for 172 yards with one touchdown and 17 receptions for 208 yards.

Proehl, the son of Ricky Proehl, is a former teammate of current Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky at North Carolina. Wesley was originally on Chicago’s 90-man roster before they waived him to make room for the required 80-man squad. Badet signed as an undrafted free agent with the Minnesota Vikings in 2018. While he’s appeared in his share of preseason games, he hasn’t seen any regular-season action.

Adams, a former fifth-round pick by the Vikings, was reinstated by the NFL back in January. He was placed on the Reserve/Retired list on April 9, 2018. Adams spent time on Minnesota’s active roster and practice squad as a rookie but never saw game action.

Former practice squad QB Kyle Sloter felt appreciated for 1st time NFL with Cardinals

When he left Arizona’s practice squad to join the Lions’ 53-man roster, it was very hard for him to do.

Last year after the preseason was over and final rosters were set, the Arizona Cardinals added quarterback Kyle Sloter to the practice squad. While Sloter had been successful in preseason stints with the Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings, he has yet to play a snap in the NFL and has bounced around.

However, Sloter, who left the Cardinals midseason last year to signed with the Detroit Lions and be part of their 53-man roster, recalls his time with the Cardinals fondly.

“What I loved about being with the Cardinals was that for the first time in my NFL career I felt very much wanted and appreciated by the coaches, the GM and the players,” he said, according to Revenge of the Birds’ Walter Mitchell. “When I offered my input in the QB room, I felt like Kyler (Murray) and Brett (Hundley) respected what I had to say, especially about pass protection adjustments and calls.”

He said leaving the Cardinals was very tough to do, even though it was something he couldn’t pass up because of the financial implications.

He said his “heart was in Arizona” and that head coach Kliff Kingsbury wanted him to stay.

“Kliff Kingsbury was very understanding,” he said. “He knows that one game can change a player’s entire career. I talked with him at length while trying to make the decision and even though he made it clear to me that he wanted to stay, he said that if he was me, he would go.”

Sloter is again a free agent. He was released by the Lions after they signed Chase Daniels to be their backup QB.

The Cardinals don’t have a spot for him now, although he would love to return. They re-signed Brett Hundley to be Murray’s backup and currently have former CFL QB Chris Streveler and Drew Anderson on the roster.

With many former Cardinals having come out and publicly expressing unhappiness with how they felt they were treated by the organization, it is good to see a story where a player has nothing but good things to say.
