Alabama football: Competition heats up for last CB job. Who will earn it?

Who will start at CB opposite of Josh Jobe?

The first scrimmage of fall camp is complete, but the competition is just getting started. One of the bigger questions that remain for the 2021 Alabama football team is who will be the corner opposite of returning starter Josh Jobe.

This spring we saw redshirt junior Jalyn Armour-Davis take the reps at the open position and at this point he is probably the leading candidate to take on that role. But at Alabama, you can never count out some of the uber-talented freshmen that Nick Saban and staff bring in every year.

A couple of weeks ago we mentioned some freshmen to watch out for during fall camp, among those were defensive backs Kool-Aid McKinstry and Terrion Arnold.

From all indications, both Kool-Aid and Arnold were impressive throughout the summer and have carried that momentum into fall camp.

We saw Kool-Aid grab an interception this spring against Braxton Barker, and apparently, in the Tide’s first scrimmage of fall camp, Arnold was also able to pick off one of the QB’s.

With all that being said, the competition is starting to heat for the one open spot in the back-end of the Alabama defense.

Will it be the savvy veteran or one of the sensational freshmen?

Whoever it is, they will have to earn it!

Alabama DB going by sweetest first name in sports

What unforgettable name is an Alabama DB going by?

There have been many great players in Alabama football history. However, they will have to go a long way to top the best first name.

That honor goes to freshman DB Ga’Quincy McKinstry, who is going by Kool-Aid. And it is in his bio on the team website.

And coach Nick Saban was all-in on the name when he discussed the heralded DB in April.

“Kool-Aid, you know, is making progress,” Saban said. “I think, you know he’s shown that he has some ability to contribute to the team. I think that, you know, he has to play with more consistency in his position. He needs to know what to do all the time.”

For some background on a player who will be legendary before he takes the field for a game in Tuscaloosa:

Widely considered the top cornerback in the 2021 signing class … a five-star on the 247Composite … ranks as the nation’s No. 23 overall player on the 247Composite, the No. 1 corner and the top player in Alabama … the No. 18 player nationally in the Top247 by 247Sports and the site’s top-ranked cornerback … rivals.com ranks him 46th nationally, as the No. 2 cornerback and as the No. 1 recruit in Alabama … a playmaker on both sides of the football, leading the Indians to the Alabama 6A State Championship in 2020 and three titles in the last four years … chose Alabama over Auburn and LSU.

No word on whether he is going to be sued by the character below for, um, gimmick infringement.
