5 defensive players to watch in Jags’ preseason opener vs. Browns

Joe Cullen has returned to Jacksonville, but this time as a defensive coordinator. Here are some names to watch from his unit in the Jags’ first preseason game.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will take the field against the Cleveland Browns for their first preseason game Saturday, and the anticipation is very high despite it not truly counting towards the team’s record. The reason for that is because a new regime is in place, and many changes were made earlier in the year.

Upon naming his staff, new Jags coach Urban Meyer brought in a new defensive coordinator in Joe Cullen, who fans knew from the Jack Del Rio era. They also added several defensive pieces in the draft and free agency to bolster a unit that was one of the worst in 2020, and simply put, Saturday’s game will give many fans a small preview of the unit’s direction.

Watch: Jags Day 12 training camp press conferences

Hear what Darrell Bevell, Cam Robinson, and K’Lavon Chaisson all had to say Wednesday about the Jags’ progress so far as the first preseason game is days away.

With their first preseason game against the Cleveland Browns just days away, the Jacksonville Jaguars took the field for their second consecutive practice of this week Wednesday. In the process of the hot session, No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence once again gave the staff something to smile about, completing 16-of-20 passes for four touchdowns. According to First Coast News’ Mia O’Brien, he also looked solid in red-zone situations, marking progress from where he was weeks ago.

Lawrence wasn’t alone on offense in terms of impressing onlookers, though, as pass-catchers like James O’Shaughnessy and Tavon Austin stood out, too. As for the defensive side, it was Tyson Campbell who continued to stand out, and he did so while seeing snaps on the perimeter as the Jags are in the process of cross-training him.

After practice, Darrell Bevell, K’Lavon Chaisson, and Cam Robinson all met with the media. Bevell and Robinson talked about the competition that is unfolding on the offensive side, while Chaisson discussed the changes that have occurred defensively among other notable topics.

Below are all three full conferences that took place Wednesday.
