Where is Rutgers football recruiting ranked after a rush of high-level commits?

Rutgers football continues to climb up the national recruiting rankings.

It was a wildly busy (and successful) month of June for Rutgers football on the recruiting front.

Of the 20 commits in the Rutgers football, 13 of them came in June. It was a sizable influx of talent, capped off by four-star wide receiver/tight end K.J. Duff of Long Island who announced his decision on Thursday night. For Rutgers, the addition of Duff is now the third commit ranked as a four-star in this class.

With all these additions, Rutgers now has one of the highest-ranked recruiting classes in the nation. It is a class that  the DNA of this class certainly has a unique feel to it as just four of the commits are from New Jersey or New York.

A look at where Rutgers football’s 2024 recruiting class now stands in the national rankings:

What is also clear is Rutgers has a lot of work still to be done if they are going to compete at the top-tier of the Big Ten. In none of the three recruiting services is Rutgers ranked in the top five of the Big Ten with their recruiting class.

[lawrence-related id=28101,28095]

Now, that isn’t the be-all or end all as the recruiting services often miss on players (it is an imperfect science). There is also a track record of programs in the Big Ten such as Iowa and Michigan State that don’t traditionally land four-star recruits but instead develop their talent.

Certainly though, it is obvious that Rutgers is trending up in recruiting this year. In 2023, the Scarlet Knights had a recruiting class that was ranked No. 57 in the nation according to 247Sports.

Good news for Rutgers and head coach Greg Schiano to see, at the very least, that they appear to be drawing in a higher level of talent this spring and summer.

Watch as four-star K.J. Duff commits to Rutgers football: ‘I really believe in what they have going on’

K.J. Duff explains why he picked Rutgers football over Miami and North Carolina.

K.J. Duff is the latest addition to the Rutgers football class of 2024, the Long Island saying he hopes to become a part of the changing direction of the program.

The wide receiver/tight end becomes the third recruit ranked as a four-star. He is ranked as the top player in New York in this recruiting class per Rivals.

At his announcement on Thursday night, Duff had hats from North Carolina, Miami and Rutgers on the table. He picked Rutgers to a loud cheer from the hundreds of people who attended the event at a local restaurant.

In speaking to Varsity Media, Duff outlined why he picked Rutgers, a program that is in its fourth season of a rebuild under head coach Greg Schiano:

“I really like what he’s doing with the program. They’re really trying to change it around there,” Duff told Varsity Media following his commitment.

“And a big pitch to me was, you know, come be the change. So, I really believe in what they have going on. And yeah, I want to go around and help the change.”

Last season for St. Anthony’s (Melville, N.Y.), he had 42 catches for 995 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns.

Duff is now the second commitment from New York in this recruiting class for Rutgers, joining Erasmus Hall defensive lineman Aaris Bethea.

What do you mean Rutgers football doesn’t have any four-star commits in this class? (and who might be next to join these three verbals)

Rutgers football has a solid recruiting class that features three athletes ranked as four star recruits.

On Thursday night, Rutgers football landed K.J. Duff, a four-star tight end/wide receiver from Long Island. This now puts this current Rutgers class at three recruits who are ranked as four-stars.

And there could be more in the mix.

Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano has been adamant about not looking at the star ratings but trying to find talented players who are the right fit. But Schiano has done a solid job of landing some top-tier talent this year as his 2024 recruiting class currently stands at top 30 in the nation according to Rivals and 247Sports.

Scroll down and check what three commits are currently ranked as four-stars (spoiler alert, Duff is a four-star but that was already mentioned in this story!) and what other four-star recruits Rutgers is currently in the mix to land in the 2024 recruiting class!

Oh yeah: Four-star K.J. Duff commits to Rutgers football

Rutgers football landed an impressive commitment on Thursday in K.J. Duff.

Rutgers football landed a bigtime player and a priority recruit in K.J. Duff. The four-star tight end from Long Island is now the highest-ranked recruit in the 2024 class for Rutgers. He is also the third commit ranked as a four-star in this current Rutgers recruiting class.

Duff is an intriguing athlete. At 6-foot-5 and 205 pounds, he has the athleticism to play wide receiver and the frame to be a tight end. He picked Rutgers over a final two that also included North Carolina. Duff also held offers from Arizona State, Duke, Georgia Tech, Kansas, Maryland, Miami, Pittsburgh, Syracuse and Texas A&M among others.

Whether Duff ends up at wide receiver or tight end (or more likely in a hybrid role), he is an important recruiting win for Rutgers football. He is ranked the second-best player in New York and the No. 17 tight end in the nation in the 247Sports Composite.

Rivals recently bumped him up to a four-star recruit.

Rutgers now has a strong class that features 20 commits.

Duff joins a Rutgers football class that includes four-star running back Gabriel Winowich (247Sports and ESPN) and four-star athlete Isaiah Crumpler (On3).

Rutgers football recruiting: K.J. Duff gets his fourth star

Long Island tight end K.J. Duff is given a fourth star by On3.

K.J. Duff just got a fourth star, as the Rutgers football target sees his recruitment continue to take off.

On Monday, Duff received a fourth star from On3. He is a 6-foot-5, 205-pound tight end prospect from St. Anthony’s (Riverhead, N.Y.).

He had originally been a three-star recruit.

According to the On3 update, Duff is the third best player in New York in his recruiting class and the No. 27 tight end in the nation. He is ranked as the No. 501 recruit in the nation.

According to On3, Duff is at 85.7 percent to go to Miami as the Hurricanes just offered him last week on an unofficial visit.

He was also offered by Duke earlier this month. He has taken recent visits to Pittsburgh, Syracuse and most recently Miami. Rutgers football offered him 14 months ago.

Last season, the class of 2024 recruit was almost unstoppable for St. Anthony’s, one of the top programs in not just the state but the region. As a junior, Duff had 42 catches for 995 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns.

K.J. Duff says Greg Schiano, Rutgers staff’s hospital visit ‘really left a positive impact on me’

K.J. Duff talks impact of Rutgers football’s hospital visits.

In June, Long Island wide receiver K.J. Duff was injured participating in a Rutgers football camp held for high school prospects. Following the injury, Duff was impressed with the outpouring of support from the Scarlet Knights including head coach Greg Schiano.

In fact, Schiano visited Duff in the hospital after the injury.

Duff suffered a broken finger in the recent Rutgers 7-on-7 competition. At the time of the injury, he was on the ground and someone ran over his finger.

The class of 2024 prospect from St. Anthony’s (Melville, N.Y.) says his recruitment has slowed down a little bit after the injury.

But that hasn’t stopped Rutgers football from making an impression on Duff. He went to the hospital following the injury and two assistant coaches popped by shortly thereafter.

“I got to the ER and after I saw the doctor, coach Shaw (wide receivers coach Damiere Shaw) got there first and stopped by for about 20 minutes,” Duff told RutgersWire. “Then after that coach Vallone (assistant coach Scott Vallone) stopped by. Coach Schiano got there right as I was leaving, he walked with me back to my car.”

Duff is almost completely back from his injury. He is hoping to visit Boston College, Maryland and Rutgers in the next few months.

The effort made by the Rutgers staff seems to have made an impression on Duff.

“As far as what coach Schiano said to me it was something along the lines of: ‘Rutgers is here for you and we want you to know that, we wish you a speedy recovery and that we will continue to stay in touch.’ The rest of the conversation was just some small talk about the 7-on-7 day,” Duff said.

“Having three coaches from the school – one being the head coach – (stop by) really left a positive impact on me.”
