Giants injury report: Kadarius Toney a projected non-participant

The New York Giants released a projected injury report on Friday and WR Kadarius Toney (hamstring) was downgraded from the day prior.

The New York Giants did not have an official practice on Friday but did release a projected injury report following the day’s meetings and walkthrough.

Nothing had changed since the day prior with one alarming exception: wide receiver Kadarius Toney was listed as a non-participant.

Toney has been dealing with a hamstring issue for several weeks and the fact that he was DNP on a projection does not bode well for his potential availability on Monday night against the Dallas Cowboys.

The Giants’ (projected) Friday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: DL Leonard Williams (knee), CB Aaron Robinson (appendicitis), CB Nick McCloud (hamstring), WR Wan’Dale Robinson (knee), CB Justin Layne (concussion), WR Kadarius Toney (hamstring)

Limited participant: LB Kayvon Thibodeaux (knee), LB Azeez Ojulari (calf), OL Jon Feliciano (shin), S Jason Pinnock (shoulder), DB Dane Belton (clavicle)

Full participant: N/A

Giants injury report: Kadarius Toney returns to practice

New York Giants WR Kadarius Toney returned to practice on Thursday, while Kayvon Thibodeaux and Azeez Ojulari appear ready to go.

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Thursday as they continue preparations for a Week 3 game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Head coach Brian Daboll says edge rushers Kayvon Thibodeaux and Azeez Ojulari are both making strides and indicated they are likely to play on Monday night. Both players have seen an uptick in practice reps.

Ojulari declared himself good to go.

Wide receiver Kadarius Toney, who sat out of practice on Wednesday, returned on a limited basis.

Daboll also wouldn’t officially rule defensive lineman Leonard Williams out for the team’s Monday night game, although it remains unlikely that he’ll play.

The Giants’ full Thursday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: DL Leonard Williams (knee), CB Aaron Robinson (appendicitis), CB Nick McCloud (hamstring), WR Wan’Dale Robinson (knee), CB Justin Layne (concussion)

Limited participant: LB Kayvon Thibodeaux (knee), LB Azeez Ojulari (calf), OL Jon Feliciano (shin), S Jason Pinnock (shoulder), WR Kadarius Toney (hamstring), DB Dane Belton (clavicle)

Giants vs. Panthers: Statistics, numbers and broken records

The New York Giants defeated the Carolina Panthers in Week 2 and here’s a look at some of the records, statistics and numbers.

The New York Giants defeated the Carolina Panthers, 19-16, on Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium. It improved their record to 2-0 on the season and has them sitting in first place in the NFC East — at least for now.

There’s a lot the Giants need to clean up, especially with the Dallas Cowboys coming to town, but there are increasing reasons for optimism.

Here’s a glance at what interesting stats, numbers and broken records were birthed from the Week 2 win over the Panthers.

  • With the win, the Giants start 2-0 for the first time since 2016. They had started 0-2 in each of the previous five seasons.
  • The Giants won their home opener for the first time since 2016 — six years later to the day.
  • New York and Carolina were tied at both halftime and after three quarters, which hasn’t happened in a Giants game since 2017.
  • Graham Gano connected on two 50-plus yard field goals on Sunday, extending his franchise record to 14 50-plus yard field goals.
  • Daniel Bellinger scored his first career touchdown and became the Giants’ first rookie tight end to score a touchdown since 2019 (Kaden Smith).
  • On his first career play, rookie safety Dane Belton recovered a fumble.
  • The Giants last recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff in 2009.
  • Darnay Holmes recorded his first career forced fumble.
  • Julian Love recorded his first full career sack.
  • Cor’Dale Flott made his first career start.
  • Tanner Hudson recorded his first (and second) receptions as a member of the Giants.
  • Justin Layne and Antonio Williams made their Giants debuts.

Former Michigan State football CB Justin Layne claimed off waivers by the New York Giants

Justin Layne claimed off waivers by the New York Giants

Since being drafted in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft, it’s been a rocky road in the NFL for former Michigan State football cornerback Justin Layne. Layne was on the fringes of the Pittsburgh Steelers roster for a few years, and even faced an arrest last year, but fortunately, Layne will continue his professionally career after being picked up off waivers by the New York Giants.

Giants claim four players off of waivers

The New York Giants have been awarded four players off of waivers, including three defensive backs.

The New York Giants established their initial 53-man roster on Tuesday but immediate changes were expected. Among them were waiver claims, which was an opportunity the Giants could maximize given the NFL’s waiver order.

At noon ET on Wednesday, those claims became official. And for the Giants, they walked away with four new players.

Pittsburgh Steelers retain Justin Layne, cut Cody White

Bittersweet for Spartan fans:

Pittsburgh Steelers waive Cody White, but Justin Layne makes the team

As final roster cuts were made on Tuesday, there are mixed emotions coming out of Pittsburgh for Spartan fans. Defensive back Justin Layne survived judgement day, but wide receiver Cody White was waived by the team.

Cody White had a very good training camp, so getting cut was somewhat of a surprise. The Steelers may have lost their chance at keeping him as well, as another team may claim him off of waivers, after a strong preseason performance.

Justin Layne has been underwhelming so far in his time in Pittsburgh, but is getting another chance to solidify a spot on the roster.

WATCH: Justin Layne snags a key interception against the Eagles

Justin Layne had a key interception in the Steelers win over the Eagles

The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 24-16 on Thursday night in an NFL preseason affair.

A key moment in the third quarter saw the Steelers down 16-14 with the Eagles driving into their territory. Former Michigan State cornerback Justin Layne had the stopper, and the momentum shifter.

A 2nd and 8 pass from Nick Mullens was jumped by Layne and intercepted and returned to the 50 yard line. The Steelers would score the go-ahead and game-winning touchdown on the ensuing drive.

You can watch Justin Layne’s interception here:

According to multiple reports, former Spartan Justin Layne was arrested on Friday morning near Cleveland, Ohio. The current Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback is being charged with speeding, driving with a suspended license, and a firearm violation.

This apparently happened late at night (or early in the morning…) at around 3 am.

Layne left Michigan State early after being named Second-team All-Big Ten in 2018. He was the No. 83 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He hasn’t made a huge splash for the Steelers yet but he did play in every game for them last season and has recorded 25 total tackles in his career. He is in line for a much bigger role with the Steelers this season.

Spartans NFL Roundup: Cousins throws for 3 TDs in win over Detroit Lions

Check out which former MSU Spartans had an impact in this past weekend’s NFL slate.

Cousins has now strung together two straight strong performances, and by no coincidence, the Vikings have won both of those games. Along with Cousins, Le’Veon Bell of the Chiefs, Shilique Calhoun of the Patriots and Justin Layne of the Steelers all played a role in their teams picking up victories this past weekend.

Take a look at how all of the former Spartans fared this past weekend in the NFL week 9.

Steelers activate CB Justin Layne off reserve/COVID-19 list and release CB Breon Borders

The Steelers announced Tuesday the activation of cornerback Justin Layne off the reserve/COVID-19 list. They released CB Breon Borders.

On Tuesday, the Steelers activated second-year cornerback Justin Layne off the reserve/COVID-19 list where he was placed on July 29.

The Michigan State product played primarily on special teams his rookie season and is expected to provide depth behind Joe Haden and Mike Hilton in 2020.

If Layne can impress this season, he may be elevated to No. 2 on the 2021 depth chart as Mike Hilton’s contract expires in March.

The Steelers released cornerback Breon Borders to make room for Layne.
