Michigan State football kicker named Lou Groza Award semifinalist

Michigan State football officially has one of the best kickers in the entire country. On Tuesday, it was announced that Michigan State kicker Jonathan Kim has been named a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award. The Lou Groza Award honors the top kicker in college football.

Jonathan Kim has been superb this season, hitting 18 of 20 field goals with his longest being a 55-yard bomb in his record-breaking night against Iowa.

Michigan State star kicker Jonathan Kim is up for a major unique award this year

Michigan State star kicker Jonathan Kim is up for a major unique award this year.

Kim has been announced as a nominee for the Burlsworth Trophy. The Burlsworth Trophy was first awarded in 2010 and is presented each year to “ College football’s most outstanding player who began his career as a walk-on”.

Kim started his career at North Carolina before transferring in 2023. He has since been a star for the Spartans since coming to Michigan State, where he has hit 30 of 37 field goal attempts and 33 of 34 extra point attempts in his two years. This year, especially, he’s been impressive, making 17 of 19 field goal attempts.

The award will be handed out on December 8.

Michigan State football kicker named a Lou Groza Award Star of the Week

Don’t look now, but Michigan State football has a rising star on their hands, and it’s their kicker. In a week where Jonathan Kim set a Michigan State record on his way to being named the Big Ten Specialist of the Week, Kim also received another honor, being named one of the Lou Groza Award Stars of the Week for week eight of the college football season.

The Lou Groza Award is given to the top kicker in college football, and each week they honor three players who stood out in the position.

Jonathan Kim was an easy addition this week, as he hit a remarkable six field goals in the win over Iowa.

  • Peyton Woodring, Georgia

If you set a school record, you should probably win some type of weekly award. I would imagine if this one didn’t go to Jonathan Kim, the Big Ten offices would have gotten some nasty emails, at the very least. On Monday, Michigan State football kicker Jonathan Kim was named the Big Ten Specialist of the Week for his performance against Iowa.

Kim booted six field goals and two extra points for a total of 20 points in the win over Iowa, including a long of 55 yards.

Michigan State football took down Iowa on Saturday, 32-20, capping a massive homecoming day. A big part of that win was Kim’s record setting day, recording six made field goals.

Following the massive win for the Spartans, and the humongous day from the Spartans kicker, Kim spoke to the media to break down the day he had and what he saw from his perspective.

Michigan State football went in to Spartan Stadium on Saturday and took down the Iowa Hawkeyes on the program’s homecoming. The 32-20 victory was massive for the Spartans goals and aspirations in 2024, and a big part of that win was MSU kicker Jonathan Kim.

Kim went 6-for-7 on field goal tries, with a long of 55 and his only miss coming from 55. The six made field goals are a new program record for a single game.

Jonathan Kim has etched his name in the MSU record books

Playing against a tough Iowa defense on Saturday night, Michigan State football turned to kicker Jonathan Kim to put numbers on the board for them, and Kim delivered in historic fashion for the Spartans. Kim set the Michigan State record for field goals in a game when he hit his sixth field goal against the Hawkeyes.

Kim was 6-for-7, with his longest field goal being 55 yards. He also hit an extra point for a total of 19 points on the night. Kim passed John Langelow and Paul Edinger who both had five in a game, with Edinger doing it twice.

Jonathan Kim is the honorary captain for MSU’s match-up against Prairie View A&M

Last week, Michigan State football kicker Jonathan Kim helped the Spartans knock-off Maryland on the road with a game-winning field goal. This week, Kim will join the other five other Michigan State captains as the honorary captain of the week against Prairie View A&M.

MSU’s other five captains, who will remain captains throughout the season, are:

  • QB Aidan Chiles
  • RB Nathan Carter
  • OL Tanner Miller
  • LB Jordan Turner
  • DL Maverick Hansen

Jonathan Kim spoke to the media ahead of PVSU, following his game winning field goal at Maryland

Jonathan Kim made the decision to transfer from North Carolina to Michigan State last season. In his first year with the Spartans, despite a bad season for the team, Kim had a good year, converting all of his extra points along with a 13-for-18 field goal clip.

Kim has carried his momentum from 2023 into 2024, and had a big game in College Park, converting both of his field goal opportunities, including the game winning field goal attempt.

MSU Football names players of the game from win vs. Maryland

Michigan State football has named its players of the game from its victory over Maryland

Michigan State got strong performances from numerous players in Saturday’s win at Maryland, but only a few are able to be named players of the game.

Head coach Jonathan Smith announced his four players of the game from the Spartans’ victory at Maryland on Saturday. The win pushed Michigan State to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.

Here’s a breakdown of the players of the game for the Spartans:

  • Cornerback Charles Brantley was the Defensive Player of the Game
  • Wide receiver Nick Marsh was the Offensive Player of the Game
  • Kick Jonathan Kim was the Special Teams Player of the Game
  • Center Tanner Miller was the Lineman of the Game

Michigan State football returns home this week for its next non-conference matchup against FCS foe Prairie View A&M. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET and the game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
